BACKGROUND: Polycystic ovarian syndrome is characterized by elevated androgens and is a well-known risk factor for the occurrence of gestational diabetes mellitus. Androgens (particularly dehydroepiandrosterone-sulfate) are crucial for the development and characteristics of the male reproductive tract during fetal life, and fetal dehydroepiandrosterone-sulfate enters the placenta where it is metabolized and functions as an estrogen substrate. Given this unique sex-specific relationship with androgens and the association of serum dehydroepiandrosterone-sulfate concentration with insulin resista

OBJECTIVE: Hirsutism affects 5-15% of women of reproductive age. Health-related quality of life (HQOL) is a multidimensional assessment of well-being that considers the physical, social, and emotional aspects associated with a specific disease. The aim of this study is to evaluate HQOL in patients diagnosed with idiopathic hirsutism (IH) and compare it with patients diagnosed with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).
METHODS: This cross-sectional observational study was performed on 183 female individuals, consisting of 51 patients diagnosed with idiopathic hirsutism, 76 patients diagnosed with

BACKGROUND: Adolescents and young adults (AYA) aged younger than 25 years have the highest rates of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in the United States. Current STI prevention strategies for AYA rely primarily on individual approaches, leaving sexual partners with significant unmet sexual and reproductive health care and health education needs. Dyadic interventions may hold promise for harnessing the power of communal coping within relationship dynamics to enhance sexual decision making, communication, and behavior changes that reduce the future risk of STIs.

BACKGROUND: Vaginal cancer is rare, accounting for only about 2% of all cancers of the female reproductive organs, and it is a disease that is rarely encountered in routine clinical practice. Vaginal cancer is mainly treated with radiation therapy or concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CCRT). However, in stage I-II cases, when the lesion is confined to the upper third of the vagina, surgical treatment may include total hysterectomy and vaginal resection with an adequate resection margin. We report a case of stage I vaginal cancer diagnosed at 13 weeks of gestation. There are very few reports on the

OBJECTIVES: to evaluate the health impact of the emissions of two waste incinerators located in the same area in Pietrasanta (Tuscany Region, Central Italy) at the border with the municipality of Camaiore, especially for diseases suggested in previous studies to be related to those emissions.
DESIGN: epidemiological geographic study.
SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: the study population was defined on the basis of residence in the two municipalities and in the areas characterized by Particulate Matter with diameter equal or less than 2.5 µm (PM2.5) and poli-chloro-dibenzo-dioxin / poli-chloro-diben

Primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) is characterised by the overproduction of parathyroid hormone (PTH) due to parathyroid hyperplasia, adenoma or carcinoma and results in hypercalcaemia and a raised or inappropriately normal PTH. Symptoms of hypercalcaemia occur in 20% of patients and include fatigue, nausea, constipation, depression, renal impairment and cardiac arrythmias. In the most severe cases, uraemia, coma or cardiac arrest can result. Primary hyperparathyroidism in pregnancy is rare, with a reported incidence of 1%. Maternal and fetal/neonatal complications are estimated to occur in 6

BACKGROUND: The adequacy of the World Health Organization's syndromic approach for the diagnosis and management of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), especially at primary health centers (PHCs) and at other levels, is still debatable in different settings in India and requires validation.
OBJECTIVES: A cross-sectional study was carried out in women attending the peripheral government clinics of Delhi in order to (1) enumerate their self-reported reproductive tract infection (RTI)/sexually transmitted infection (STI) symptoms; (2) assess their clinical status; (3) determine the syndromic di

Australia, the flattest, driest, and geologically oldest vegetated continent, has a uniquely high proportion of nutrient-poor soils. We develop a "Nutrient-Poverty/Intense-Fire Theory," which postulates that most anomalous features of organisms and ecosystems of Australia are the evolutionary consequences of adaptations to nutrient poverty, compounded by intense fire that tends to occur as a result of nutrient poverty. The fundamental tenet of the theory is that plants growing in environments with plentiful light and periodic adequate moisture, but on soils poor in phosphorus, zinc, and other

Advances in understanding the epidemiology of endometriosis have lagged behind other diseases because of methodologic problems related to disease definition and control selection. Nevertheless, a better picture of the epidemiology of endometriosis has emerged over the past few decades. Prevalence estimates of the disease in clinic populations vary from about a 4% occurrence of largely asymptomatic endometriosis found in women undergoing tubal ligation to 50% of teenagers with intractable dysmenorrhea. General population incidence during the 1970s in this country has been suggested to be 1.6 pe

To investigate the prevalence and the natural history of human papillomavirus infections, we monitored HPV DNA shedding as a consequence of immunosuppression, with the expectation that latent viral infections would reactivate and become detectable. The study populations consisted of women who were in end-stage renal failure, those who ultimately received kidney transplantations, and those who had HIV/AIDS with various degrees of immune depression at entry. For each woman, cervico-vaginal lavage to sample viral shedding from the lower genital tract was performed at approximately six month inter

The aim of this study was to obtain evidence for the genetic basis of polycystic ovaries (PCO) and premature male pattern baldness (PMPB) by screening first-degree relatives of women affected by polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Because of the high prevalence of PCO in the general population, we also studied first-degree relatives of ten asymptomatic control volunteers of reproductive age. The probands were recruited prospectively from infertility and endocrine clinics, where they presented with various clinical symptoms of PCOS. Each had PCO, on transvaginal ultrasound scan. The families of 2

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is characterized by hyperandrogenism, chronic anovulation, and oligomenorrhea (O/M). PCOS has variable clinical phenotypes, biochemical features, and metabolic abnormalities. To determine the prevalence of PCOS in the Greek population as well as the metabolic parameters, we performed a cross-sectional study of 192 women of reproductive age (17-45 yr), living on the Greek island of Lesbos. They were divided into 4 groups according to the presence of hirsutism (defined as a Ferriman-Gallwey score > or = 6) and O/M: group N (n = 108), regular menses and absence of

Breast cancer, the most frequent spontaneous malignancy diagnosed in women in the western world, is continuously increasing in incidence in industrialized nations. Although breast cancer develops in women as the result of a combination of external and endogenous factors such as exposure to ionizing radiation, diet, socioeconomic status, and endocrinologic, familial, or genetic factors, no specific etiologic agent(s) or the mechanisms responsible of the disease has been identified as yet. Thus, experimental models that exhibit the same complex interactions are needed for testing various mechani

For women of reproductive age, pregnancy and lactation are the two most common physiological causes of amenorrhoea. This article concentrates on pathological causes of amenorrhoea. Primary amenorrhoea refers to the absence of menarche at the age of 16 and secondary amenorrhoea is the cessation of menses for at least 6 months in already cycling women. Amenorrhoea is not a diagnosis but a symptom indicating anatomical, genetic and neuroendocrine abnormalities. It can be determined by two different groups of causes: (a) anatomical defects of the genital organs; (b) endocrine dysfunctions. Both co

Conventional theories would not predict the 60% decline of infant mortality which has occurred among the Hmong population of Thailand, from 123/1000 in the mid-1960s to 48 in the mid-1980s. The Hmong population in northern Thailand has sustained high fertility and low use of modern health services. Most Hmong live in relatively remote rural villages and earn their living by self-employed farming. They have low levels of education, especially for women. They live in multi-generational patrilineal-patrilocal extended family households. Women's status is low. These characteristics contrast strong

The disorders presented consist of those clinical entities in which a reasonably well defined lipid storage material accumulated within nervous tissue. Many other progressive, degenerative disorders are suspected of being storage disorders, but their chemical pathology remains unclear. Collectively this group could be designated the sphingolipidoses. In each case, the disease is a genetic disturbance and transmitted as an autosomal recessive. Sphingolipid storage in each disorder is associated with deficient activity of a specific degradative enzyme or enzyme system, and these deficient enzyme

STUDY QUESTION: Do teenage girls with a history of menstrual irregularity and/or elevated androgen levels in adolescence exhibit an increased risk of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and/or infertility later on in adulthood?
SUMMARY ANSWER: Our results suggest that menstrual irregularity and/or elevated androgen levels at 16 years are still associated with symptoms of PCOS at 26 years as well as infertility problems at 26 years but not with decreased pregnancy or delivery rates at 26 years.
WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: Hyperandrogenaemia is associated with menstrual irregularity, hirsutism, acne a
