In vitro chondrocyte differentiation using costochondral chondrocytes as a source of primary rat chondrocyte cultures: an improved isolation and cryopreservation method.

INTRODUCTION: Isolating and culturing primary chondrocytes such that they retain their cell type and differentiate to a hypertrophic state is central to many investigations of skeletal growth and its regulation. The ability to store frozen chondrocytes has additional scientific and tissue engineering interest. Previous work has produced approaches of varying yield and complexity but does not permit frozen storage of cells for subsequent differentiation in culture. Investigations of growth plate dysplasias secondary to defective osteoclastogenesis in rodent models of osteopetrosis led us to ada

Primary hyperparathyroidism and the risk of fracture: a population-based study.

While severe primary hyperparathyroidism (HPT) is clearly associated with osteitis fibrosa cystica, it remains uncertain whether mild, asymptomatic primary HPT adversely affects the skeleton. Thus, we assessed the incidence of age-related fractures in a large, population-based inception cohort of 407 cases of primary HPT (93 men and 314 women) recognized during the 28-year period, 1965-1992. Fracture risk was assessed by comparing new fractures at each site to the number expected from gender- and age-specific fracture incidence rates for the general population (standardized incidence ratios, S

The crankshaft phenomenon after posterior Harrington fusion in skeletally immature patients with thoracic or thoracolumbar idiopathic scoliosis followed to maturity.

STUDY DESIGN: This retrospective study evaluated the progression of deformity after posterior fusion by reviewing 63 consecutive patients with idiopathic scoliosis who were all in Risser sign 0 at the time of surgery. All patients were observed beyond the time of skeletal maturity. Average follow-up time was 9 years and 8 months (range, 5-16 years). OBJECTIVES: To investigate the risk factors for the crankshaft phenomenon after posterior fusion and to build a model for predicting the probability of curve progression until maturation of growth. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: There remains consid

Radiographic outcomes of anterior spinal fusion versus posterior spinal fusion with thoracic pedicle screws for treatment of Lenke Type I adolescent idiopathic scoliosis curves.

STUDY DESIGN: Analysis of radiographic outcomes following surgical correction of scoliosis. OBJECTIVES: To compare the curve correction and derotation following anterior spinal fusion (ASF) versus posterior spinal fusion (PSF) with thoracic pedicle screws. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: The benefits of ASF in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis include saving distal fusion levels and historically greater correction and derotation compared with PSF. However, comparative studies between ASF and PSF have generally consisted only of posterior hook instrumentation or hybrid constructs, with no direct co

Multiple fractures after an explosive injury in Gaza.

BACKGROUND: Treating cases that require different surgical specialties requires high-level interdisciplinary coordination, and prioritization of the patient's needs, which is nearly impossible in a war zone. AIM: To document the case of a woman who was diagnosed with multiple fractures from an explosive injury sustained during the October 2023 war in Gaza. METHODS: The woman underwent 3 surgical operations, internal fixation for the rib fracture, internal fixation of the left humerus, and fixation of the mandible fracture. She was hospitalized for nearly one month in 2 admission intervals-14

Case Report: Osteosclerotic metaphyseal dysplasia with optic nerve involvement and progressive osteonecrosis of the jaw due to a novel LRRK1 mutation.

BACKGROUND: Osteosclerotic metaphyseal dysplasia (OSMD, OMIM 615198) is an extremely rare autosomal recessive osteopetrosis disorder resulting in a distinctive pattern of osteosclerosis of the metaphyseal margins of long tubular bones. To date, only thirteen cases have been reported (eight molecularly confirmed). Five homozygous sequence variants in the leucine-rich repeat kinase 1 (LRRK1) gene have been identified to cause OSMD. We present two male siblings with OSMD with a novel LRRK1 variant. CASES: The index case, now aged 6 years, was referred aged 9 months when diffuse sclerosis of the

Blunt trauma related chest wall and pulmonary injuries: An overview.

Physical traumas are tragic and multifaceted injuries that suddenly threaten life. Although it is the third most common cause of death in all age groups, one out of four trauma patients die due to thoracic injury or its complications. Blunt injuries constitute the majority of chest trauma. This indicates the importance of chest trauma among all traumas. Blunt chest trauma is usually caused by motor vehicle accident, falling from height, blunt instrument injury and physical assault. As a result of chest trauma, many injuries may occur, such as pulmonary injuries, and these require urgent interv

Using "Rebar" to Stabilize Rigid Chest Wall Reconstruction.

After major chest wall resection, reconstruction of the bony defect with a rigid prosthesis is mandatory to protect the underlying thoracic organs, and to prevent flail chest physiology. Although many methods have been described for chest wall reconstruction, a commonly used technique employs a composite Marlex (polypropylene) mesh with methyl-methacrylate cement sandwiched between two layers of mesh (MMS), which is tailored to the defect size and shape. In building construction, steel "rebar" is used to strengthen and reinforce masonry structures. To avoid the initial residual motion of the r

Severe saddle nose: choices for augmentation and application of accordion technique against warping.

BACKGROUND: Saddle nose deformity presents a significant challenge to surgeons. The reconstruction of a saddle nose requires structural addition to the nasal dorsum and tip. Costal cartilage grafts have been utilized for fixing severe saddle nose deformity, but costal cartilage is notorious for early and/or late warping. In addition to well-known measures, the efficacy of a preventive surgical technique against warping was investigated in this study. METHODS: Costal cartilage grafts were used in 18 patients with severe saddle noses. Due to recurrent and late warping of the grafts, an addition

Morphologic, morphometrical and histochemical proprieties of the costal cartilage in children with pectus excavatum.

Pectus excavatum (PE) is the most frequent anterior chest deformity occurring in approximately one of 1000 live births. Despite the excellent achievements in the treatment of the disease, the etiology of PE is yet to be clarified. It is believed that the cause for PE is an intrinsic costal cartilage abnormality leading to an overgrowth of the cartilage, which pushes the sternum backward. Several histological studies revealed contradictory results and failed to identify a clear structural abnormality of the costal cartilage responsible for the apparition of PE. In this article, we focused on id
