Pain perception in female adolescents with borderline personality disorder.

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a severe and often debilitating psychiatric disorder that begins during adolescence. Core features of BPD are affective dysregulation, dysfunctional self-concepts, and difficulties in social interactive domains. A widely accepted marker for severe emotion dysregulation in adult BPD is decreased pain sensitivity. Until now it is unclear whether this characteristic feature of BPD is already present during adolescence. Thus, this study aims to investigate pain sensitivity in adolescent patients meeting DSM-IV criteria for BPD. 20 female adolescent patients

FlexO2: A patient-controlled oxygen flow selector improving autonomy and daily function in long-term oxygen therapy (LTOT).

BACKGROUND: Chronic respiratory insufficiency associated with severe resting hypoxemia necessitates long-term oxygen therapy (LTOT), yet existing devices often impede daily activities due to cumbersome flow adjustments, increasing reliance on caregivers. FlexO2 is a novel mechanical regulator that enables switching between preset oxygen flow rates for rest and activity. This proof-of-concept study evaluated its impact on patient autonomy, physical activity, and quality of life. METHODS: In a consecutive, non-randomized pre-post intervention proof-of-concept study at Karolinska University Hosp

A Prospective Observational Study of a 2-Week Integrative Inpatient Therapy on Patients with Fibromyalgia Syndrome.

Background: The fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) is classified as a functional somatic syndrome and is characterized primarily by chronic pain in multiple body regions and physical and/or mental fatigue. The German S3-guideline recommends a multimodal therapy for severe forms. Since research on non-pharmacologic complementary, naturopathic, and integrative therapy approaches shows positive and promising effects, integrative methods are firmly anchored in the S3 guideline. Objective/Methods: Aim of the present study was to investigate whether a multimodal integrative treatment program can be effecti

Comparative study of MAFLD as a predictor of metabolic disease treatment for NAFLD.

A novel concept of Metabolic Associated Fatty Liver Disease (MAFLD) was proposed, incorporating metabolic abnormalities such as obesity and diabetes, which are risk factors that affect the prognosis. Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD), entails fat accumulation in the liver without alcohol consumption and is often linked to obesity, insulin resistance, and metabolic syndrome. However, the broad nature of the disease concept has hindered prognosis accuracy. In this study, we assess the contribution of the impact of diagnostic criteria for MAFLD on metabolic disease progression compared to

Next Generation Computing and Communication Hub for First Responders in Smart Cities.

This paper contributes to the development of a Next Generation First Responder (NGFR) communication platform with the key goal of embedding it into a smart city technology infrastructure. The framework of this approach is a concept known as SmartHub, developed by the US Department of Homeland Security. The proposed embedding methodology complies with the standard categories and indicators of smart city performance. This paper offers two practice-centered extensions of the NGFR hub, which are also the main results: first, a cognitive workload monitoring of first responders as a basis for their

Are characteristics associated with strong Black womanhood linked to depression in older Black women?

BACKGROUND: Older Black women experience structural and intersectional disadvantages at the intersection of age, race, and gender. Their disadvantaged social statuses can translate into serious psychological health consequences. One concept that may aid in understanding psychosocial determinants of older Black women's depression risk is the "Strong Black Woman," which suggests that Black women have supernatural strength amidst experiencing adversity and are expected to "be strong" for others by providing self-sacrificial aid without complaint. OBJECTIVES: Drawing inspiration from the "Strong

Awareness About Medication-Related Osteonecrosis of the Jaw Among Dental Professionals: A Multicentre Study.

PURPOSE: Bisphosphonates and non-bisphosphonate antiangiogenic and antiresorptive agents are widely used in the management of bone diseases and cancer. A subset of patients receiving these drugs can manifest with medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) and it is one of the major complications faced in dental practice. Dentoalveolar and periodontal surgery are the major risk factors associated with it. Therefore, a dentist must have adequate knowledge to promptly identify patients at risk and efficiently manage the condition. This multicentre study was designed with an aim to assess

The immune system as a regulator of normal physiology.

Concepts of how the immune system functions have evolved during the last half century. From widespread acceptance of Self-Nonself Discrimination to explain adaptive immunity, to increasing understanding of receptor-mediated activation of innate immunity through the Danger Model, understanding of the role of the immune response continues to grow with ever broader models such as the Damage Response Framework and the Discontinuity Model. The realisation that the majority of foreign antigens, such as those comprising the microbiome, are tolerated by the immune system, allows a re-appraisal of immu

Self-organizing bioceramic granules with wave-dissipating architectures for bone void filling.

Granular bone substitutes readily adapt to irregular defects but lack initial stability, often resulting in granule migration and clinical complications. Inspired by the structural stability of wave-dissipating concrete blocks, which protect breakwaters from wave impact, we fabricated wave-dissipating bioceramic granules using digital light processing-based 3D printing and evaluated their potential for bone repair. Of six wave-dissipating designs, Tetrapod, Dolos, and Hexaleg were demonstrated to self-organize into the architectures featuring optimal intergranular space for bone ingrowth and m

Uncertainty-aware temporal self-learning (UATS): Semi-supervised learning for segmentation of prostate zones and beyond.

Various convolutional neural network (CNN) based concepts have been introduced for the prostate's automatic segmentation and its coarse subdivision into transition zone (TZ) and peripheral zone (PZ). However, when targeting a fine-grained segmentation of TZ, PZ, distal prostatic urethra (DPU) and the anterior fibromuscular stroma (AFS), the task becomes more challenging and has not yet been solved at the level of human performance. One reason might be the insufficient amount of labeled data for supervised training. Therefore, we propose to apply a semi-supervised learning (SSL) technique named

Embodiment as a Paradigm for Understanding and Treating SE-AN: Locating the Self in Culture.

There has been a growing call for sociologically engaged research to better understand the complex processes underpinning Severe and Enduring Anorexia Nervosa (SE-AN). Based on a qualitative study with women in Adelaide, South Australia who were reluctant to seek help for their disordered eating practices, this paper draws on anthropological concepts of embodiment to examine how SE-AN is experienced as culturally grounded. We argue that experiences of SE-AN are culturally informed, and in turn, inform bodily perception and practice in the world. Over time, everyday rituals and routines became

Distinct and Untamed: Articulating Bulimic Identities.

Bulimia nervosa and anorexia nervosa are inextricably linked, with substantial clinical and epidemiological overlaps. Yet, while anorexia has been analyzed extensively in medical anthropology, bulimia remains under-theorized. This is, perhaps, because, compared to self-starvation, binge eating presents a logic of practice that is difficult to reconcile with culturally reified notions of self-control, transcendence, and hard work. Thus, although anthropologists have analyzed anorexic subjectivities as imbued with a sense of cleanliness and purity, moral superiority, and heroics, similar analyse

How do parents label their physical disciplinary practices? A focus on the definition of corporal punishment.

The lack of consensus about the definition of corporal punishment (CP) contributes to the varying research findings and fuels the debate surrounding its use. Related to the problem of definitional variability is also the possibility that some parents may not be aware that their physical disciplinary strategies (PDS) are forms of CP. As a first step to move beyond the debate and to tailor educational efforts to change cultural norms and parents' behaviors, the objective of the current study was to clarify what parents self-label as CP. Using a sample of 338 Canadian parents, the study assessed
