The moderating effect of age on the associations of cognitive and metacognitive beliefs with pediatric OCD symptoms.

Although considerable research has highlighted the importance of cognitive and metacognitive beliefs in adult obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), there has been limited investigation of these beliefs in pediatric OCD. The present study investigated the clinical correlates of cognitive and metacognitive beliefs in pediatric OCD. Previous studies found positive relations between OCD symptoms and these beliefs in pediatric patients, and we hypothesized these beliefs would also be positively related to pediatric OCD symptom severity. We additionally hypothesized age would moderate these relations

Relationships Between Cortically Mediated Attentional Dysfunction and Social Anxiety, Self-Focused Attention, and External Attention Bias.

Social anxiety disorder is characterized by a marked fear and avoidance of social situations or a fear of being evaluated by others. Although training for top-down attentional control has been an effective treatment for social anxiety disorder, few studies have demonstrated that individuals with social anxiety have top-down attentional dysfunction. This study used dichotic listening (DL) tasks to investigate the relationship between social anxiety and top-down attentional control over relevant brain activities. We also investigated relationships between both social situation-dependent self-foc

Weakened Resilience in Parenting Self-Efficacy in Pregnant Women Who Were Abused in Childhood: An Experimental Test.

This study tested experimentally whether the combination of a history of childhood abuse and confrontation with difficult infant temperament is associated with negative changes in parenting self-efficacy. First-time pregnant women (N = 243) participated in the Adult Attachment Interview, which was used to assess the occurrence of abuse by parents in childhood and unresolved representations, and completed a task asking them to respond to infant cries. Sixty of the 243 participants (25%) experienced childhood abuse, mostly physical or sexual. The task simulated infant temperamental difficulty by

Application of a novel grey self-memory coupling model to forecast the incidence rates of two notifiable diseases in China: dysentery and gonorrhea.

OBJECTIVE: In this study, a novel grey self-memory coupling model was developed to forecast the incidence rates of two notifiable infectious diseases (dysentery and gonorrhea); the effectiveness and applicability of this model was assessed based on its ability to predict the epidemiological trend of infectious diseases in China. METHODS: The linear model, the conventional GM(1,1) model and the GM(1,1) model with self-memory principle (SMGM(1,1) model) were used to predict the incidence rates of the two notifiable infectious diseases based on statistical incidence data. Both simulation accurac

Why some women have an optimistic or a pessimistic bias about their breast cancer risk: experiences, heuristics, and knowledge of risk factors.

Perceived risk to a health problem is formed by inferential rules called heuristics and by comparative judgments that assess how one's risk compares to the risk of others. The purpose of this cross-sectional, community-based survey was to examine how experiences with breast cancer, knowledge of risk factors, and specific heuristics inform risk judgments for oneself, for friends/peers, and comparative judgments for breast cancer (risk friends/peers - risk self). We recruited an English-speaking, multicultural (57% nonwhite) sample of 184 middle-aged (47 + or - 12 years old), well-educated women

Current role of automated ambulatory blood pressure and self-measured blood pressure determinations in clinical practice.

OBJECTIVE: To discuss the clinical indications for use of automated indirect blood pressure measurement (ABPM) and self-monitoring of blood pressure. DESIGN: Available equipment, variations in blood pressure, and settings in which ABPM may be useful are reviewed. RESULTS: Measurement of blood pressure in the physician's office may not reflect the usual blood pressure in other nonmedical environments, such as at work, at home, or during sleep. Self-measurement of blood pressure at home and work and ABPM can provide this additional information. These procedures can be useful not only for deter

Psychological mechanisms of behavioral change: Trajectories of self-efficacy and motivation among Tunisian health science students using a mobile application to quit smoking - A prospective observational study.

Tobacco use remains a leading preventable cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, with high prevalence among Tunisian health sciences students. Psychological determinants such as motivation and self-efficacy are key predictors of smoking cessation success. Mobile health (mHealth) interventions offer scalable support, yet their influence on these psychological mechanisms is underexplored in specific contexts. This study aimed to evaluate changes in motivation and self-efficacy to quit smoking among health sciences students using a culturally adapted mobile app in Tunisian dialect, and to ex

Development and validation of an asthma self-knowledge questionnaire.

BACKGROUND: Validated questionnaires for adequately assessing knowledge about asthma are scarce. Thus, the primary objective of the present study was to develop and validate an asthma self-knowledge questionnaire, based on international recommendations on the disease. The secondary objectives were to compare knowledge about asthma between asthmatic patients and non-asthmatic individuals; assessing whether asthma affects the level of self-knowledge of the disease and what factors may be associated with poorer self-knowledge of the disease. METHODS: The Bronchial Asthma Self-Knowledge Questionn

Processing narratives of self-destructive behavior in routine medical encounters: health promotion, disease prevention, and the discourse of health care.

This study asked how patients and doctors process self-destructive behaviors that warrant preventive action, such as smoking, substance use, and sexual practices. Although many suggestions have appeared about how physicians should encourage health promotion and disease prevention by counseling patients about self-destructive personal habits, few studies have examined actual encounters to assess how patients and doctors communicate about these matters, and prior research rarely has considered the social context of self-destructive habits. The present research has been influenced by a growing re

Understanding stress from a cultural perspective: the role of self-construal.

Stress is an adaptive psychophysiological process that plays an important role in human survival and adjustment. Increasing evidence suggests that stress responses are shaped not only by environmental demands but also by cultural and self-related psychological processes. Self-construal, which refers to how individuals define themselves in relation to others, has been widely regarded as an important mechanism linking culture to cognition, emotion, motivation, and behavior. However, its role in stress-related processes has not been systematically synthesized. The current narrative review integra

The Emergence of Self-Awareness in Preterm Infants: Insights From the Rooting Reflex.

AIM: Touch is the first sense to develop during fetal life. Sensory exploration in preterm infants may underlie early sensory self-awareness. This study aimed to demonstrate the emergence of sensory self-awareness in preterm infants by analysing behavioural responses of the rooting reflex. METHODS: This single-centre, prospective study included preterm infants born between 24 and 37 weeks gestational age (wGA). The rooting reflex was assessed via video in two conditions: external stimulation and facilitated self-stimulation. The rooting reflex was characterised by four progressively complex b

Health self-efficacy and general health in fibromyalgia: hope, hopelessness, and role functioning as serial mediators.

Fibromyalgia involves symptoms of pain, sleep disruption, and fatigue, which can have a deleterious impact on mental and physical health, and role functioning. Health self-efficacy, the perceived ability to manage and cope with health problems, may mitigate risk for functional disability and improve health perceptions. As a contributor to goal-oriented motivation, self-efficacy may facilitate hope and reduce hopelessness, thereby promoting willingness and motivation to engage in functional activities, with consequent benefit to perceived health. Our sample of 416 persons with self-reported fib

Learning to Be Kind to Me: A Compassion-Focused Group for Adolescents With Anorexia Nervosa.

BACKGROUND: Anorexia nervosa (AN) is often characterised by high levels of shame and self-criticism. Compassion-Focused Therapy (CFT) is a transdiagnostic intervention targeting these emotional vulnerabilities, yet its application in adolescent eating disorder services remains underexplored. METHODS: This project examined a group-based CFT intervention delivered within an Intensive Day Treatment Programme at a specialist, outpatient child and adolescent eating disorder service. Quantitative outcomes were assessed using the Self-Compassion Scale (SCS) and Adolescent Shame-Proneness Scale (ASPS

Self-management and sputum conversion in pulmonary tuberculosis: a prospective study.

BACKGROUND: This study aims to investigate the impact of patient self-management assessed through the self-management in tuberculosis patients (SMSTP) scale on the outcomes of intensive-phase antituberculosis treatment in newly diagnosed tuberculosis patients. Additionally, we explored the correlation between self-management and the risk of a sputum smear not converting to negative after 2 months of treatment and constructed a regression prediction model for predictive analysis. METHODS: A prospective cohort study was conducted that strictly adhered to the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Ba

The Dynamic Interaction between Procedural Learning and Resting-State Functional Connectivity in Self-Limited Focal Epilepsies.

The functional brain networks related to procedural learning (PL) have never been explored in children with self-limited focal epilepsies of childhood (SeLFE), despite their role in the development of various sequence-related sensorimotor, language, and cognitive abilities that are impaired in this clinical population. Our study fills this gap by investigating PL and its interaction with the rapid reorganisation of resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC) in SeLFE. A serial reaction time task, preceded and followed by resting-state magnetoencephalography (MEG) recordings, was used to asses

Validity of Self-Report Information on Cranial Tremors in Essential Tremor: Analysis of Data from a Large, Prospective Cohort.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: Cranial (i.e., head and voice) tremors are highly prevalent in essential tremor (ET). They may be disabling, and they often drive treatment. Furthermore, their appearance may provide insights into disease severity and staging. Several features of these tremors make self-report data complex. There are no data on the validity of self-reported information on cranial tremors in ET. We evaluated the validity of self-reported cranial tremor in ET. METHODS: ET cases, enrolled in a prospective evaluation, were queried about the presence of head and voice tremors. A detailed neur
