AIMS: Reverse total shoulder arthroplasty (rTSA) can be used in complex cases when the glenoid requires reconstruction. In this study, a baseplate with composite bone autograft and a central trabecular titanium peg was implanted, and its migration was assessed for two years postoperatively using radiostereometric analysis (RSA).
METHODS: A total of 14 patients who underwent a rTSA with an autograft consented to participate. Of these, 11 had a primary rTSA using humeral head autograft and three had a revision rTSA with autograft harvested from the iliac crest. The mean age of the patients was

PURPOSE: Preliminary data suggest that women with breast cancer are at particularly high risk of adhesive capsulitis of the shoulder. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the potential association between breast cancer and adhesive capsulitis in adults from Germany.
METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included all women aged ≥ 18 years who were diagnosed for the first time with breast cancer in one of 1,274 general practices in Germany between January 2000 and December 2018 (index date). Women without breast cancer were matched (1:1) to those with breast cancer using a propensity s

The present study represents the first meta-analytic synthesis of the utility of a widely used early-childhood self-regulation measure, the Head-Toes-Knees-Shoulders task, in predicting children's academic achievement. A systematic review of the literature yielded 69 studies accessed from peer reviewed journals representing 413 effect sizes and 19,917 children meeting the complete set of inclusion and exclusion criteria. Robust variance analysis demonstrated that the Head-Toes-Knees-Shoulders task was a consistent predictor of children's academic achievement across literacy, oral language, and

BACKGROUND: Shoulder arthroplasty is becoming increasingly common. With evolving implant designs, multiple humeral stem options exist for the surgeon to choose from. New stemless and short-stem systems are modular, remove less native bone stock, and better adapt to patient anatomy. It has been suggested that shorter stem implants may be protective against periprosthetic fracture; however, this has not been mechanistically evaluated. Therefore, this study aimed to biomechanically test synthetic humeri with long-stem, short-stem, and stemless arthroplasty components in a torsional manner to eval

BACKGROUND: Instability after reverse shoulder arthroplasty (RSA) is one of the most frequent complications and remains a clinical challenge. Current evidence is limited by small sample size, single-center, or single-implant methodologies that limit generalizability. We sought to determine the incidence and patient-related risk factors for dislocation after RSA, using a large, multicenter cohort with varying implants.
METHODS: A retrospective, multicenter study was performed involving 15 institutions and 24 American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons members across the United States. Inclusion crite

PURPOSE: To compare the effects of end-range manual therapy versus other conservative intervention on pain intensity, shoulder range of movement (ROM), and physical function in adhesive capsulitis (AC).
METHODS: Two reviewers conducted a comprehensive search from inception to December 2022. PUBMED, Cochrane Library, CINAHL, EMBASE, and PEDro databases were searched. Clinical trials investigating the effects of end-range mobilisation techniques on pain, ROM, and physical function in patients with AC were included. Methodological quality was evaluated using the PEDro scale, and bias risk was as

Adhesive capsulitis is an idiopathic and disabling disorder characterized by intense shoulder pain and progressive limitation of active and passive glenohumeral joint range of motion. Although adhesive capsulitis has been traditionally considered a diagnosis of exclusion that can be established based on a suggestive medical history and the detection of supporting findings at the physical exam, imaging studies are commonly requested to confirm the diagnostic suspicion and to exclude other causes of shoulder pain. Indeed, clinical findings may be rather unspecific, and may overlap with diseases

BACKGROUND: The Seated Reach Test (SRT) is an assessment tool for evaluating the sitting balance of individuals with a spinal cord injury (SCI). We developed the Shoulder Shifting Test (SST), which is a tool for measuring the reaching distance of individuals with difficulty in raising their arms, such as individuals with tetraplegia.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the agreement between the SST and the SRT and the usefulness of the SST.
SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Sixteen subjects with SCI (age 52.9 ± 13.0 yrs; four with tetraplegia) performed the SST and the SRT. We determined the correlation coefficie

IntroductionAcute shoulder dislocations are a commonly encountered injury in the acute care setting. Time restrictions and limited availability of diagnostic and therapeutic resources are barriers to attempting reduction in the urgent care setting. Use of point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) can expediate diagnosis, offer a means for safe and effective analgesia, and provide bedside confirmation of reduction. Case presentationA 54-year-old woman stumbled while dismounting from a bicycle, bracing herself with an abducted externally rotated left arm so as not to fall. Following the incident, she had

Background: Shoulder subluxation occurs in 17−64% of hemiplegic patients after stroke and develops mostly during the first three weeks of hemiplegia. A range of shoulder orthoses has been used in rehabilitation to prevent subluxation. However, there is little evidence of their efficacy. AIM: This study aimed to investigate whether there is a difference in the subluxation distance, pain, and functional level of the hemiplegic upper extremity among patients with two different shoulder orthoses. Design: This is a prospective, randomized controlled trial with intention-to-treat analysis. SETTING:

BACKGROUND: Neurologic injury is a rare and potentially devastating complication of shoulder arthroplasty. Patients typically present with a mixed plexopathy or mononeuropathy, most commonly affecting the axillary and radial nerves. Given the paucity of studies available on the topic, our goal was to elucidate the prevalence of nerve injury after shoulder arthroplasty and to describe the treatment course and outcomes of neurologic injuries.
METHODS: This is a retrospective case-control study performed at a single, urban, academic institution. Consecutive patients who underwent anatomic total

BACKGROUND: Technological innovations have allowed the use of miniature apparatus that can easily control and program heat and cold stimulations using Peltier elements. The wearable thermo-device has a potential to be applied to conventional contrast bath therapy. This study aimed to examine the effects of alternating heat and cold stimulation (HC) using a wearable thermo-device on subjective and objective improvement of shoulder stiffness.
METHODS: Twenty healthy young male individuals (20.3 ± 0.6 years) participated in this study. The interventions were randomly conducted under four conditi

BACKGROUND: Although reverse total shoulder arthroplasty (RSA) is considered a safe surgical option in elderly patients, large-scale analyses of complications and mortality after RSA in patients 80 years and older are scarce. The goals of the current study were to identify revision, complication, and early mortality rates after RSA in patients 80 years and older and compare these to younger patients.
METHODS: The PearlDiver Database, which contains services rendered to Medicare, Medicaid, and commercial insurance patients, was queried for patients undergoing RSA using International Classifica

BACKGROUND: The purpose of the present study was to retrospectively evaluate new bone formation after arthroscopic Bankart repair (ABR) and the influence of new bone formation on recurrence in shoulders with an erosion-type glenoid defect.
METHODS: We analyzed data on shoulders with an erosion-type glenoid defect. Participants were patients who underwent computed tomography to evaluate new bone formation after ABR performed from 2004 to 2021 and were followed for a minimum of 2 years. We investigated the factors influencing new bone formation, in particular the presence of an intraoperative b

OBJECTIVE: Recent studies suggest that the knee is frequently involved in PMR. In this study, we aimed to determine whether the US assessment of the shoulder and knee discriminates between PMR and other differential diagnoses and improves the accuracy of the 2012 EULAR/ACR provisional classification criteria for PMR.
METHODS: We consecutively enrolled 81 untreated patients who received a diagnosis of PMR. These patients were divided into two groups based on the final diagnosis made at 1-year follow-up: PMR-definite group (n = 60) and PMR-mimic group (n = 21). We also enrolled age/sex-matched

Neck with shoulder muscle stiffness/pain is a common disorder. Commonly used physical therapy, pharmacotherapy, acupuncture, and moxibustion only temporarily alleviate the disorder in most cases, thus the disorder often recurs. Low power laser therapy is often used for neck and shoulder stiffness/pain and has been effective in clinical trials. In this study, we evaluated the safety and effectiveness of a newly developed self-care device for disorders including neck with shoulder muscle stiffness/pain. The device incorporates light-emitting diodes (LEDs), which are safer than lasers, as its lig
