Cognitive and daily functioning in older adults with vegetative symptoms of depression.

OBJECTIVES: In primary care 50-95% of patients with depression present with vegetative symptoms (VS). Based on the extant literature, older adults showing VS (but no dysphoria) may show functional impairment but this hypothesis has not been empirically tested. The goal of this study was to examine neurocognitive and daily functioning of elderly patients showing exclusively VS in comparison with patients presenting with VS and dysphoria. METHODS: Seven hundred and eighty-seven primary care patients received measures of neurocognition and daily functioning. Neurocognition was measured with the

The effects of buprenorphine/naloxone maintenance treatment on sexual dysfunction, sleep and weight in opioid use disorder patients.

Opioid use disorder is a growing social problem. Different agents are used in the treatment of this disorder. One of these agents is buprenorphine / naloxone combination that includes buprenorphine and naloxone in a ratio of 4:1. Although used successfully in opiate maintenance treatment, buprenorphine / naloxone could have some side effects that might affect the treatment. The present study aimed to examine the effects of buprenorphine /naloxone opiate maintenance treatment on sexual dysfunction, sleep and bodyweight in patients diagnosed with opioid use disorder and to draw the attention of

Sleep and neurobehavioral characteristics of 5- to 7-year-old children with parentally reported symptoms of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

OBJECTIVES: This study examined the hypothesis that domains of neurobehavioral function would be selectively affected by sleep-disordered breathing (SDB). Therefore, we assessed potential relationships between objectively measured sleep disturbances and neurobehavioral function in children with reported symptoms of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and also determined the incidence of snoring and other sleep problems in 5- to 7-year-old children in the local community and potential relationships to parental snoring and passive smoking. METHODS: Parents of 5- to 7-year-old childr

Impact of rapid-eye-movement sleep behavior disorder on propofol anesthesia depth monitoring in parkinson's disease.

Depth-of-anesthesia monitoring, particularly in functional neurosurgical procedures such as asleep deep brain stimulation, is critical for balancing individualized neurophysiological needs with perioperative safety. Parkinson's disease (PD) patients with rapid-eye-movement sleep behavior disorder (RBD) demonstrate wakefulness electroencephalographic (EEG) abnormalities that may confound monitoring. Whether these RBD-associated EEG patterns persist under propofol anesthesia and distort monitoring indices remains to be elucidated. This study therefore aimed to determine if propofol anesthesia in

The troy sleep scale: clinical validation and establishment of a screening cut-off.

BACKGROUND: Sleep complaints are common and clinically consequential, highlighting the need for brief multidimensional screening tools. The Troy Sleep Scale (TSS) was previously developed in a non-clinical sample; this study aimed to validate the TSS in a clinical sample and estimate a screening threshold based on subjective sleep-complaint status. METHODS: This case-control psychometric study included 434 adults, comprising 272 participants with subjective sleep complaints and 162 healthy controls. Participants completed the 11-item TSS, which includes three subscales, and established compar

Digital Sleep Disruption: Unraveling the Network Structure of Technology Use and Sleep Problems Through Network Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Sleep problems have emerged as a critical health concern in the digital age, yet the complex mechanisms linking technology use to sleep disruption remain poorly understood. Previous research has typically examined isolated relationships between specific technological behaviors and sleep outcomes, overlooking the complex interplay among various digital factors. This study aims to address this gap by employing network analysis to investigate the interconnected relationships among multiple technology-related factors and their collective influence on sleep problems. METHODS: Using net

Light on nonmotor symptoms in Parkinson's disease patients: The impact on quality of life.

Non-motor symptoms of Parkinson's disease contribute substantially to a reduction in health-related quality of life for patients and carers. Whilst some non-motor symptoms are dopamine-responsive, current treatment options for many are limited and often unsatisfactory. We report on early observations of non-motor symptoms in seven Parkinson's disease patients treated with daily transcranial red and near infrared photobiomodulation, over periods ranging from six to thirty-four months. Six of seven patients used home-made devices, including bucket light hats with unpulsed 630 nm-850 nm LED strip

Associations between prenatal alcohol exposure and parent-reported sleep disturbances in 10,336 adolescents: an Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development study.

BACKGROUND: This study investigated the associations between prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE), including low and moderate levels of exposure, and parent-reported sleep disturbances during adolescence. This is an area that remains understudied despite evidence linking PAE, particularly heavy PAE, to poor sleep in younger children and the growing recognition of harms associated with low levels of PAE. METHODS: Participants were 10,336 adolescents (aged 12-13) from the fourth assessment wave of the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development Study. Cross-sectional generalised linear mixed models and g
