Identification of a β-Arrestin 2 Mutation Related to Autism by Whole-Exome Sequencing.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a complex neurological disease characterized by impaired social communication and interaction skills, rigid behavior, decreased interest, and repetitive activities. The disease has a high degree of genetic heterogeneity, and the genetic cause of ASD in many autistic individuals is currently unclear. In this study, we report a patient with ASD whose clinical features included social interaction disorder, communication disorder, and repetitive behavior. We examined the patient's genetic variation using whole-exome sequencing technology and found new de novo muta

Role of the right temporoparietal junction in intergroup bias in trust decisions.

Intergroup bias, which is the tendency to behave more positively toward an in-group member than toward an out-group member, is pervasive in real life. In particular, intergroup bias in trust decisions substantially influences multiple areas of life and thus better understanding of this tendency can provide significant insights into human social behavior. Although previous functional magnetic resonance imaging studies showed the involvement of the right temporoparietal junction (TPJ) in intergroup trust bias, a causal relationship between the two has rarely been explored. By combining repetitiv

Testing the Social Interaction Learning Model's Applicability to Adolescent Substance Misuse in an Australian Context.

BACKGROUND: Parents and peers both influence the development of adolescent substance misuse, and the Social Interaction Learning (SIL) model provides a theoretical explanation of the paths through which this occurs. OBJECTIVE: The SIL model has primarily been tested with conduct outcomes and in US samples. This study adds to the literature by testing the SIL model with four substance use outcomes in a sample of Australian youth. METHOD: We used structural equation modeling to test the fit of the SIL model to a longitudinal sample (n = 907) of students recruited in grade 5 in Victoria, Austra

Automated Tracking of Motion and Body Weight for Objective Monitoring of Rats in Colony Housing.

Living together in large social communities within an enriched environment stimulates self-motivated activity in rats. We developed a modular housing system in which a single unit can accommodate as many as 48 rats and contains multiple functional areas. This rat colony cage further allowed us to remotely measure body weight and to continuously measure movement, including jumping and stair walking between areas. Compared with pair-housed, age-, strain-, and weight-matched rats in conventional cages, the colony-housed rats exhibited higher body mass indices, had more exploratory behavior, and w

Developmental Trajectories of Suicidal Thoughts and Behaviors From Adolescence Through Adulthood.

OBJECTIVE: Little is known about the patterns among individuals in the long-term course of suicidal thoughts and behaviors (STBs). The objective of this study was to identify developmental trajectories of STBs from adolescence through young adulthood, as well as risk and protective covariates, and nonsuicidal outcomes associated with these trajectories. METHOD: A total of 180 adolescents (ages 12-18 years at recruitment) were repeatedly assessed over an average of 13.6 years (2,273 assessments) since their psychiatric hospitalization. Trajectories were based on ratings of STBs at each assessm

Readiness to change and brain damage in patients with chronic alcoholism.

High motivation to change is a crucial triggering factor to patients' engagement in clinical treatment. This study investigates whether the low readiness to change observed in some alcoholic inpatients at treatment entry could, at least partially, be linked with macrostructural gray matter abnormalities in critical brain regions. Participants comprised 31 alcoholic patients and 27 controls, who underwent 1.5-T magnetic resonance imaging. The Readiness to Change Questionnaire, designed to assess three stages of motivation to change (precontemplation, contemplation and action stages), was comple

Evidence-based psychosocial treatments for phobic and anxiety disorders in children and adolescents.

The article reviews psychosocial treatments for phobic and anxiety disorders in youth. Using criteria from Nathan and Gorman (2002), 32 studies are evaluated along a continuum of methodological rigor. In addition, the treatments evaluated in each of the 32 studies are classified according to Chambless et al.'s (1996) and Chambless and Hollon's (1998) criteria. Findings from a series of meta-analyses of the studies that used waitlists also are reported. In accordance with Nathan and Gorman, the majority of the studies were either methodologically robust or fairly rigorous. In accordance with Ch

Neonatal cardiac vagal tone and school-age developmental outcome in very low birth weight infants.

Twenty very low birth weight (VLBW) children participated in a longitudinal follow-up study designed to explore the relation between neonatal physiological measures and school-age (6-9 years) outcome measures. Neonatal measures of mean heart period and cardiac vagal tone (respiratory sinus arrhythmia, RSA) were derived from weekly recordings at 33, 34, and 35 weeks gestational age. An RSA Maturation measure was calculated across the 3-week period to assess functional changes in vagal regulation of the heart during a period in which there is enhanced myelination of the vagus. In addition, the r

Construction and Validation of Academic Support Scale in Middle School (ASSMS).

Research on social support in China has been relatively comprehensive as psychological development cannot be separated from the social environment. Family, teachers, and friends are the main sources of social support for middle school students. If we can fully utilize the academic support provided by families, teachers, and classmates in daily life, improve students' personal efficacy, stimulate their learning motivation and desire, and provide corresponding emotional, resource, behavioral, and willingness support for middle school students, it will help them better enhance their learning adap

Application of Behavioral Science in Digital Therapeutics for Individuals With Prediabetes: Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: Digital therapeutics are increasingly used to manage prediabetes due to their accessibility and potential for personalization. Their success depends heavily on applying behavioral science and integrating theoretical models into digital platforms. However, there has not been a comprehensive account of how behavioral science has been used in digital therapeutics for individuals with prediabetes. OBJECTIVE: This scoping review aimed to examine the use of behavioral theories and techniques in digital therapeutic interventions for individuals with prediabetes, and to identify opportuni

Self-Report of Restricted Repetitive Behaviors in Autistic Adults: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Autism research has relatively neglected restricted repetitive behaviors (RRB) and autistic adults compared with the social domain of autism and autistic children. With this review, we aimed to synthesize what is currently known about autistic adult's self-reported RRB, researcher's use of methods, and consideration of masking and gender, and to highlight gaps in our knowledge to inform future research. METHODS: We conducted a systematic search of five databases that we last ran in February 2023. We included studies where autistic adults self-reported on one or more subtypes of th

Effects of maternal mobility on the development of rocking and other behaviors in rhesus monkeys: a study with artificial mothers.

Mechanically driven mobile artificial mothers effectively prevented the development of stereotyped body-rocking in rhesus monkeys. Monkeys were maternally separated at birth and assigned to 2 groups. Both groups were placed with surrogates, identical in construction except that for 1 group the surrogate was in motion 50% of the time from 0500 hours to 2400 hours each day, and for the other group the surrogate was stationary. All but 1 of the 10 monkeys raised with stationary artificial mothers developed rocking as an habitual pattern whereas none of the 9 monekys raised with mobile mothers did

Adolescent health lifestyles and suicidality: Emerging risks in a latent class analysis.

Adolescent suicidal behavior is a major global public health concern. Risks are often shaped not only by individual behaviors alone but also by broader constellations of health lifestyles. We aim to identify distinct adolescent health lifestyles and assess their associations with suicidal ideation and suicide attempts. Using data from the 2022 Luxembourg Health Behaviour in School-aged Children survey, latent class analysis identified five health lifestyle classes based on seven behaviors (diet, physical activity, substance use and problematic social media use). Hierarchical logistic regressio

Headache psychiatry: A structured narrative review and integrative framework.

Headache disorders involve complex interactions between neurobiological, psychiatric, behavioral, and social factors. Despite robust evidence of psychiatric comorbidity and psychosocial influences, these dimensions remain inadequately integrated into clinical practice and conceptual models. This review synthesizes evidence linking psychiatric factors with headache disorders and proposes Headache Psychiatry as a unified, integrative framework, operationalized through the Psychocephalology model. We conducted a structured narrative review across PubMed, PsycINFO, and Web of Science (1990-2025),

Dark Personality Traits and Burnout as Predictors of Relational Aggression: A Study in Young Adults.

Background Relational aggression - covert behaviors such as social exclusion, guilt induction, and malicious humor - is increasingly observed among young adults. While dark personality traits (narcissism, Machiavellianism, and psychopathy) are known to predict such behaviors, the influence of burnout - a state of emotional exhaustion and detachment - on this relationship remains underexplored. Aim This study aimed to examine how dark triad traits and burnout interact in predicting relational aggression in a non-clinical young adult population. Methods A total of 200 participants aged 18-30 yea
