The Impact of Vitamin A Deficiency and Supplementation on Behavioral and Oxidative Stress Markers in Male Offspring of a Valproic Acid-Induced Autism Rat Model.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition influenced by genetic and environmental factors, including prenatal nutrition. This study investigates the role of Vitamin A deficiency (VAD) in exacerbating ASD-like behaviors in a valproic acid (VPA)-induced rat model and mitigating effects of Vitamin A supplementation (VAS). Twenty-five pregnant rats were divided into five groups, with treatments including VPA exposure and VAD. Neurodevelopmental and behavioral tests, such as the rollover, negative geotaxis, gait, and open field, assessed motor coordination and social interact

Host and environmental factors shape upper airway microbiota and respiratory health across the human lifespan.

Our understanding of the normal variation in the upper respiratory tract (URT) microbiota across the human lifespan and how these relate to host, environment, and health is limited. We studied the microbiota of 3,104 saliva (<10 year-olds)/oropharynx (≥10 year-olds) and 2,485 nasopharynx samples of 3,160 Dutch individuals 0-87 years of age, participating in a cross-sectional population-wide study (PIENTER-3) using 16S-rRNA sequencing. The microbiota composition was strongly related to age, especially in the nasopharynx, with maturation occurring throughout childhood and adolescence. Clear nich

Effects of Valproic Acid Embryonic Exposure on Zebrafish: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Exposure to valproic acid (VPA) during embryogenesis has become a valuable tool for modeling neurodevelopmental disorders in animal models such as zebrafish (Danio rerio). This article examines the effects of embryonic exposure to VPA in zebrafish on the basis of 39 articles sourced from PubMed and Google Scholar. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to elucidate the common impacts of VPA exposure and reported that VPA significantly altered development at various levels. Behaviorally, zebrafish exposed to VPA exhibit notable changes in their social interaction patterns. Physiolog

Lived Experiences of Cognitive Dysfunction in Fibromyalgia: How Patients Discuss Their Experiences and Suggestions for Patient Education.

Cognitive dysfunction (CD) is a common, impairing symptom experienced by persons with fibromyalgia (FM). This study explored how individuals with FM describe their experience of CD in an online peer support environment. Posts referencing cognitive symptoms were extracted from two Facebook FM peer support groups at two timepoints. Using inductive Thematic Analysis, key discussion themes were identified and compared across groups and time. Four themes represented the way members described their cognitive experiences in FM: understanding and describing CD experiences, distrust of cognitive abilit

Recommendations for the prevention and management of obesity in the Iraqi population.

Obesity is a chronic metabolic disease that has become one of the leading causes of disability and death in the world, affecting not only adults but also children and adolescents. In Iraq, one third of the adult population is overweight and another third obese. Clinical diagnosis is accomplished by measuring body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference (a marker for intra-visceral fat and higher metabolic and cardiovascular disease risk). A complex interaction between behavioral, social (rapid urbanization), environmental and genetic factors underlies the etiology of the disease. Treatment op

Emerging drug design strategies in anti-influenza drug discovery.

Influenza is an acute respiratory infection caused by influenza viruses (IFV), According to the World Health Organization (WHO), seasonal IFV epidemics result in approximately 3-5 million cases of severe illness, leading to about half a million deaths worldwide, along with severe economic losses and social burdens. Unfortunately, frequent mutations in IFV lead to a certain lag in vaccine development as well as resistance to existing antiviral drugs. Therefore, it is of great importance to develop anti-IFV drugs with high efficiency against wild-type and resistant strains, needed in the fight a

Prosthetic rehabilitation in a bilateral lower limb pediatric amputee: Case report.

CASE DESCRIPTION: A 2-month-old child required a bilateral limb amputation, right transtibial, and left transfemoral after a deep burn compromising one-third of the body surface area. Traumatic amputations of lower limbs at such an early age are uncommon and underreported in the literature, especially in middle-income countries. OBJECTIVE: To describe the long-term follow-up of the prosthetization process after traumatic bilateral amputation of a 2-month-old patient. TREATMENT: The process started with compensatory prostheses for independent sitting, followed by exoskeletal devices with SACH

[Understanding and dealing with mental health problems of migrant children].

UNDERSTANDING AND DEALING WITH MENTAL HEALTH PROBLEMS OF MIGRANT CHILDREN The prevalence of certain psychological disorders (post-traumatic stress disorder, depression) is higher among migrant children. High stress levels and vulnerability factors before, during and after mi¬gration play an important role in the development of these disorders. The clinical expression of psychological suffering is usually functio¬nal before the age of 6. For children over the age of 6, psychological symptoms have an impact on schooling and social interaction. The school must rely on the child's resources and ab

Effects of arginine vasopressin on the transcriptome of prefrontal cortex in autistic rat model.

Our previous studies have also demonstrated that AVP can significantly improve social interaction disorders and stereotypical behaviours in rats with VPA-induced autism model. To further explore the mechanisms of action of AVP, we compared the PFC transcriptome changes before and after AVP treatment in VPA-induced autism rat model. The autism model was induced by intraperitoneally injected with VPA at embryonic day 12.5 and randomly assigned to two groups: the VPA-induced autism model group and the AVP treatment group. The AVP treatment group were treated with intranasal AVP at postnatal day 2

On Spatiotemporal Overdispersion and Macroparasite Accumulation in Hosts Leading to Aggregation: A Quantitative Framework.

In many host-parasite systems, overdispersion in the distribution of macroparasites leads to parasite aggregation in the host population. This overdispersed distribution is often characterized by the negative binomial or by the power law. The aggregation is shown by a clustering of parasites in certain hosts, while other hosts have few or none. Here, I present a theory behind the overdispersion in complex spatiotemporal systems as well as a computational analysis for tracking the behavior of transmissible diseases with this kind of dynamics. I present a framework where heterogeneity and comple

Autism Spectrum Disorder and Epilepsy.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD), was first described in 1943 as a disorder consisting of a triad of qualitative impairments of social interaction, communication and restricted repetitive patterns of behavior, interests, and activities. The relationship between ASD and epilepsy is well documented. Patients with ASD have an increased risk of epilepsy, while those with epilepsy have a higher risk of ASD, as compared with the general population. Diagnosing epilepsy in those with ASD can be challenging. For example, stereotyped behaviors could be mistaken as ASD stereotypies, when in fact, they may

A Neuropsychological Rehabilitation Framework to Address Cognitive and Neurobehavioral Impairments After Strokes to the Anterior Communicating Artery.

Patients with strokes to the Anterior Communicating Artery (ACoA) pose an important challenge to rehabilitation teams due to a particular mix of cognitive and behavioral impairments (anosognosia, anterograde amnesia, prospective memory problems, and executive dysfunction). These deficits often compromise engagement with rehabilitation, learning and generalization. The goal of this article is to describe the long-term presentation of a patient with an ACoA stroke (Mrs. B, a 60-year-old electric engineer) as well as her rehabilitation needs and the many challenges experienced by the rehabilitati
