Neural Mechanisms Underlying Affective Theory of Mind in Violent Antisocial Personality Disorder and/or Schizophrenia.

Among violent offenders with schizophrenia, there are 2 sub-groups, one with and one without, conduct disorder (CD) and antisocial personality disorder (ASPD), who differ as to treatment response and alterations of brain structure. The present study aimed to determine whether the 2 groups also differ in Theory of Mind and neural activations subsuming this task. Five groups of men were compared: 3 groups of violent offenders-schizophrenia plus CD/ASPD, schizophrenia with no history of antisocial behavior prior to illness onset, and CD/ASPD with no severe mental illness-and 2 groups of non-offen

[Polycystic kidney disease: An analysis of e-patients exchanges in the public blogosphere].

The goal this study was to understand the preoccupations of e-patients with Autosomal Dominant Polycystic Kidney Disease (ADPKD), through their discussions on social networks, and to compare them with those of members of a specialized association. We collected and analyzed all messages containing an unequivocal expression of the pathology (polycystic kidney disease, PKD, ADPKD, etc.) available on public forums on the French Internet and all french-language messages posted on the forum of the patient group Association Polykystose-France (PKD-France) during 2 years. Heterogeneity in Kv2 Channel Expression Shapes Action Potential Characteristics and Firing Patterns in CA1 versus CA2 Hippocampal Pyramidal Neurons.

The CA1 region of the hippocampus plays a critical role in spatial and contextual memory, and has well-established circuitry, function and plasticity. In contrast, the properties of the flanking CA2 pyramidal neurons (PNs), important for social memory, and lacking CA1-like plasticity, remain relatively understudied. In particular, little is known regarding the expression of voltage-gated K+ (Kv) channels and the contribution of these channels to the distinct properties of intrinsic excitability, action potential (AP) waveform, firing patterns and neurotransmission between CA1 and CA2 PNs. Semantic Networks, Schema Change, and Reincarceration Outcomes of Therapeutic Community Graduates.

BACKGROUND: Therapeutic community (TC) clinical theory assumes that peer interaction forms a framework for social learning that will displace ingrained cognitive schema that underlie substance abuse. There has been no direct test of this hypothesis. METHODS: We analyzed the content of a large corpus of written affirmations (pushups) and corrections (pull-ups) exchanged between 2342 male TC graduates. We encoded the content of the written communications as semantic networks of words, in which words that appear in the same brief document are connected and are referred to as word combinations. L

Loss of Adenylyl Cyclase Type-5 in the Dorsal Striatum Produces Autistic-Like Behaviors.

Autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) are a heterogeneous group of psychiatric illness characterized by common core symptoms including sociability deficits and stereotyped behaviors. ASD is caused by various genetic and non-genetic factors. The genetic effects of autism-related genes are usually global and are presented with multiple symptoms, which hamper understanding of the mechanism through which the diverse causes of ASD produce common symptoms. In the present study, we demonstrate that genetic or molecular disruption of an array of molecular networks centered on adenylyl cyclase type-5 (AC5 o

Underestimation of Leptospirosis Incidence in the French West Indies.

BACKGROUND: Leptospirosis is a neglected zoonosis affecting mainly tropical and subtropical regions worldwide, particularly South America and the Caribbean. As in many other countries, under-reporting of cases was suspected in the French West Indies because of inadequate access to diagnostic tests for the general population. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: In order to estimate the real incidence of leptospirosis in Guadeloupe and Martinique, a study was performed in 2011 using the three prevailing available biological tests for diagnosis: Microscopic Agglutination Test (MAT), IgM ELISA and PC

Neuroanatomy of intergroup bias: A white matter microstructure study of individual differences.

Intergroup bias-the tendency to behave more positively toward an ingroup member than an outgroup member-is a powerful social force, for good and ill. Although it is widely demonstrated, intergroup bias is not universal, as it is characterized by significant individual differences. Recently, attention has begun to turn to whether neuroanatomy might explain these individual differences in intergroup bias. However, no research to date has examined whether white matter microstructure could help determine differences in behavior toward ingroup and outgroup members. In the current research, we exami

Violence against children: an analysis of mandatory reporting of violence, Brazil 2011.

This article aims to describe and analyze reporting of violence against children from 0 to 9 years of age, issued by the public health services, in Brazil. Data from the Violence and Accident Surveillance System (Viva-SINAN) were used. The frequency of selected variables was calculated by age group (0-1; 2-5 and 6-9 years of age) as well as their Prevalence Ratios (PR). 17.900 cases were reported: 33% in the 0-1 year group; 35,8% in the 2-5 year group; and 31,2% in the 6-9 year group. Physical violence predominated among boys (PR: 1.22; CI 95%: 1,16-1,28 ); 6-9 years old (PR: 1,19; CI 95%: 1,1

Neural substrates of inhibitory and emotional processing in adolescents with traumatic brain injury.

PURPOSE: Disturbances of emotional regulation and social difficulties are common in children and adolescents with traumatic brain injury (TBI). Recent research suggests that developments within ``socio-emotional'' brain systems during early adolescence and more protracted development of "cognitive control'' systems have implications for emotional and behavioral regulation during adolescence. However, few functional neuroimaging studies have directly examined the interaction of these neuropsychological processes in adolescents with TBI. The current study examined how affective processing might

Novel approaches to spinal cord protection during thoracoabdominal aortic interventions.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Spinal cord ischemia after thoracoabdominal aortic interventions is a devastating complication because it significantly worsens the perioperative morbidity and mortality. Long-term outcome is also affected because of medical complications which are directly related to the neural deficits. Paraplegia has significant medical, social, and financial aspects. Limited mobility, the need for assistance in activities of daily living, makes paraplegia an important target for prevention. An understanding of spinal cord blood supply, risk factors for spinal ischemia, and strategies for

[Reluctance of patients with chronic kidney disease stage 3 to join education programs offered by a health network].

INTRODUCTION: Therapeutic education helps patients to acquire the knowledge and ability to live with their disease. However, some patients are not willing to take part in a health education program. Identifying the barriers of their non-adherence would help us to determine accurately their effective educational needs and to adapt the program to deliver a better education for less-motivated patients. PATIENTS AND METHODS: An education program for chronic kidney disease stage 3 patients was implemented across a health network. The study is based on patient's participation during each step of th

Whole-genome phylogenomic heterogeneity of Neisseria gonorrhoeae isolates with decreased cephalosporin susceptibility collected in Canada between 1989 and 2013.

A large-scale, whole-genome comparison of Canadian Neisseria gonorrhoeae isolates with high-level cephalosporin MICs was used to demonstrate a genomic epidemiology approach to investigate strain relatedness and dynamics. Although current typing methods have been very successful in tracing short-chain transmission of gonorrheal disease, investigating the temporal evolutionary relationships and geographical dissemination of highly clonal lineages requires enhanced resolution only available through whole-genome sequencing (WGS). Phylogenomic cluster analysis grouped 169 Canadian strains into 12 d

Minding the ecological body: neuropsychoanalysis and ecopsychoanalysis.

Neuropsychoanalysis explores experimentally and theoretically the philosophically ancient discussion of the relation of mind and body, and seems well placed to overcome the problem of a "mindless" neuroscience and a "brainless" psychology and psychotherapy, especially when combined with a greater awareness that the body itself, not only the brain, provides the material substrate for the emergent phenomenon we call mind. However, the mind-brain-body is itself situated within a complex ecological world, interacting with other mind-brain-bodies and the "non-human environment." This occurs both sy

Action simulation plays a critical role in deceptive action recognition.

The ability to infer deceptive intents from nonverbal behavior is critical for social interactions. By combining single-pulse and repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) in healthy humans, we provide both correlational and causative evidence that action simulation is actively involved in the ability to recognize deceptive body movements. We recorded motor-evoked potentials during a faked-action discrimination (FAD) task: participants watched videos of actors lifting a cube and judged whether the actors were trying to deceive them concerning the real weight of the cube. Seeing faked

Big data: the management revolution.

Big data, the authors write, is far more powerful than the analytics of the past. Executives can measure and therefore manage more precisely than ever before. They can make better predictions and smarter decisions. They can target more-effective interventions in areas that so far have been dominated by gut and intuition rather than by data and rigor. The differences between big data and analytics are a matter of volume, velocity, and variety: More data now cross the internet every second than were stored in the entire internet 20 years ago. Nearly real-time information makes it possible for a

NICU Network Neurobehavioral Scale profiles predict developmental outcomes in a low-risk sample.

BACKGROUND: Latent profile analysis (LPA) has been used previously to classify neurobehavioral responses of infants prenatally exposed to cocaine and other drugs of abuse. The objective of this study was to define NICU Network Neurobehavioral Scale (NNNS) profile response patterns in a cohort of infants with no known cocaine exposure or other risks for neurobehavior deficits, and determine whether these profiles predict neurobehavioral outcomes in these low-risk infants. METHODS: NNNS exams were performed on 355 low-risk infants at approximately 5 weeks after birth. LPA was used to define dis
