Prominent cadmium (Cd) pollution and widespread phoxim (pH) use hinder the growth and medicinal value of Ligusticum chuanxiong Hort. (Chuanxiong). While bioremediation by rhizobacteria helps plants counter pollutants, the specific roles of indigenous resistant consortia collected from polluted soils in immobilizing heavy metals, degrading pesticides, and enhancing plant stress tolerance remain insufficiently explored. Here, an indigenous pollutant-resistant consortium (RM) was developed from a highly Cd-polluted area (14.85 mg/kg Cd) as a bioremediation strategy to alleviate stress on Chuanxio

Geogenic Cr(III) oxidative release in serpentine soils is a continuous source of Cr contamination in surface and groundwater. Although manganese (Mn) oxides have been shown to be a key factor driving Cr(III) oxidative release, their oxidative mechanism and release fluxes in serpentine soils remain unclear. In this study, the dual mechanism of δ-MnO2 regulating Cr release and migration from surface soil was revealed through column leaching experiments. The results showed that δ-MnO2 significantly promoted soil Cr release, and most of the Cr(VI) generated by oxidation went into the aqueous phase

There is growing interest in interactions of microplastics (MPs) with other pollutants. However, there is limited understanding of the combined effects of MPs and silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) on nontarget soil organisms. This work aimed to examine the effects of exposure to various AgNPs' concentrations alone (0, 0.1, 1, 10, 100, 1000 mg kg-1, 50 nm) and in combination with polyvinyl chloride microplastics (PVC MPs, 80-250 μm) at 0.1% concentration for 28 days on reproduction, Ag accumulation, C/N ratio, and isotopic fractionation of the standard soil fauna collembolan Folsomia candida. The increased consumption of antibiotics and their partial metabolism by the human and animal body have led to the frequent identification of such compounds in various environmental matrices. Ciprofloxacin (CIP) is one of the most widely used antibiotics worldwide and it has low mobility and high sorption to soil, leading to the potential to accumulate and persist on organic fertilizers (manure and sewage sludge) and agricultural soils. Therefore, the presence of CIP in the agricultural environment has become an emerging concern as it may negatively affect soil organisms and soil quality, and

A comprehensive understanding of the formation of mineral-associated organic matter (MAOM) is a prerequisite for the sustainable management of soil carbon (C) and the development of effective long-term strategies for C sequestration in soils. Nevertheless, the precise manner by which microbial and mineral properties drive MAOM formation efficiency and its subsequent response to elevated temperature at the regional scale remains unclear. Here, we employed isotopically labelled laboratory incubations (at 15°C and 25°C) with soil samples from a ~3000 km transect across the Tibetan Plateau to eluc

The ecotoxic endocrine-disrupting chemical di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) is ubiquitous in agricultural soil, posing a serious threat to human health. Here, we report efficient soil-borne DEHP degradation and plant growth promotion by a microbial organic fertilizer GK-PPB prepared by combining a recycled garden waste-kitchen waste compost product with ternary compound microbial agent PPB-MA, composed of Penicillium oxalic MB08F, Pseudomonas simiae MB751, and Bacillus tequilensis MB05B. The combination of MB08F and MB751 provided synergistic phosphorus solubilization, and MB05B enhanced the

The recruitment of the phosphorus-solubilizing rhizobacteria plays an important role in response to phosphorus deficiency. Through the treatments of Arabidopsis thaliana (Col-0) and the FERONIA (FER) functional deficient mutants (fer-4 and fer-5) with the soil suspension in various phosphorus conditions, we discovered that FER could promote phosphorus-solubilizing rhizobacteria enrichment to rescue the defective plant during phosphorus deficiency. The amplicon sequencing data reflected that the phosphorus-solubilizing rhizobacterial genus Alcaligenes was significantly enriched of Col-0 than fe

Grafting is an effective horticultural method to reduce Cd accumulation in crops. However, the mechanism of grafting inducing the decrease in Cd content in scions remains unclear. This study evaluated the effect of grafting on fruit quality, yield, and Cd content of Solanum melongena, and explored the potential mechanism of grafting reducing Cd content in scions. In the low Cd-contaminated soil, compared with un-grafted (UG) and self-grafted plants (SG), the fruit yield of inter-grafted plants (EG) increased by 38 %, and the fruit quality was not markedly affected. In EG, the decrease in total

The intake of methylmercury (MeHg)-contaminated rice poses immense health risks to rice consumers. However, the mechanisms of MeHg accumulation in rice plants are not entirely understood. The knowledge that the MeHg-Cysteine complex was dominant in polished rice proposed a hypothesis of co-transportation of MeHg and cysteine inside rice plants. This study was therefore designed to explore the MeHg accumulation processes in rice plants by investigating biogeochemical associations between MeHg and amino acids. Rice plants and underlying soils were collected from different Hg-contaminated sites i

Trace element pollution from anthropogenic sources is increasingly widespread. This pollution in terrestrial environments threatens agricultural crop production, while in aquatic environments, it threatens fish cultivation. The contamination of these crucial food sources raises significant concerns regarding food safety, security, and its potential adverse effects on human health. Coastal areas are particularly vulnerable to heavy metal pollution due to their proximity to industrial and urban centres, as well as their susceptibility to contamination from marine sources. In attempting to identi

Lead-zinc (Pb-Zn) tailings ponds carry the risk of multiple heavy metals (HMs) contamination and pile destabilization. This poses requirements for in-situ applicable, low-distribution, and effective stabilization/solidification (S/S) methods. For this, the novel enzymatically induced phosphate precipitation (EIPP) method was implemented in this study. Its mechanism and performance on stabilization of composite Pb, Zn, and cadmium (Cd) in tailings were explored and evaluated under typical erosion conditions for the first time. Results show that the EIPP stabilized HMs by chemically transforming

Dietary restriction (DR) and dietary deprivation (DD) have been shown to be significantly beneficial in terms of lifespan gains and stress alleviation in invertebrate and vertebrate species. Such beneficial effects, however, have yet to be clearly assessed in the presence of chemical stressors. We conducted a comparative evaluation of the toxicity of carbaryl in Eisenia fetida individuals subjected to a full diet (FD), DR and DD. For 14 days, groups of ten worms subjected to FD received 5 g oatmeal, those subjected to DR received 2.5 g oatmeal, and those subjected to DD received 0 g oatmeal we

Microbial metabolic activities in rhizosphere soil play a critical role in plant nutrient utilization and metal availability. However, its specific characteristics and influence on endophyte assisted phytoremediation remains unclear. In this study, an endophyte strain Bacillus paramycoides (B. paramycoides) was inoculated in the rhizosphere of Phytolacca acinosa (P. acinosa), and microbial metabolic characteristics of rhizosphere soils were analyzed using Biolog system to investigate how they influence phytoremediation performance of different types of cadmium contaminated soil. The results in

Biochar could reshape microbial communities, thereby altering methylmercury (MeHg) concentrations in rice rhizosphere and seeds. However, it remains unclear whether and how biochar amendment perturbs microbe-mediated MeHg production in mercury (Hg) contaminated paddy soil. Here, we used pinecone-derived biochar and its six modified biochars to reveal the disturbance. Results showed that selenium- and chitosan-modified biochar significantly reduced MeHg concentrations in the rhizosphere by 85.83% and 63.90%, thereby decreasing MeHg contents in seeds by 86.37% and 75.50%. The two modified bicoha

Arable lands getting contaminated with heavy metals have a very high negative impact on crop plants. The establishment of the mycorrhizal association with crop plants is a sustainable strategy to overcome metal toxicity. The major aim of this study was to analyze mycorrhizae-mediated alterations on the physiology and metabolism of Oryza sativa, as well as the impact of these alterations in the metal tolerance potential of the host on exposure to cadmium (Cd) and zinc (Zn) stresses. For this, 45 d old O. sativa (var. Varsha) plants inoculated with Claroideoglomus claroideum were exposed to 1.95

A health risk assessment was carried out for the residents of Łęgnowo-Wieś settlement adjacent to a former Zachem Chemical Plant, Bydgoszcz, Poland. Due to the unique Zachem site history and contamination profile, an innovative strategy for soil sampling and contaminant selection was applied. The novelty in the developed strategy consisted of selecting substances for the health risk assessment, taking into consideration the location and boundaries of the groundwater contamination plumes in relation to contamination sources. This allowed limiting the number of the analysed contaminants. The ris

Aromatic hydrocarbons (AHs) are toxic environmental contaminants presented in most of the environmental matrices. Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) for the removal of AHs in the account of complete mineralization from various environmental matrices have been reviewed in this paper. An in-depth discussion on various AOPs for mono (BTEX) and polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and their derivatives is presented. Most of the AOPs were effective in the removal of AHs from the aquatic environment. A comparative study on the degradation of various AHs revealed that the oxidation of the AHs is strongl

Lime is one of the commonly used amendments for acidic soils. The reasonable application of lime can effectively improve the current status of acid tailings and reduce harm to the environment. In this study, we analyzed the pH alternation of acid tin tailing as a function of lime dose based on three methods-single titration method, K-bicarbonate titration method, and buffer curve method-to predict the accurate lime requirement (LR) in acid tin tailing treatments. Of these prediction methods, the buffer curve method was best suited for the prediction of lime dose, and the prediction values agre

Plant-microbe interaction is a significant tool to tackle heavy metals problem in the soil. A pot trial was conducted to evaluate the efficiency of lead tolerant rhizobacteria in improving pea growth under Pb stress. Lead sulfate (PbSO4) was used for spiking (250, 500, and 750 mg kg-1). Results indicated that inoculation with Pb-tolerant PGPR strain not only alleviated the harmful impacts of Pb on plant growth but also immobilized it in the soil. PGPR in the presence of Pb at concentrations of 0, 250, 500 and 750 mg kg-1, increased shoot and root lengths by 21, 15, 18% and 72, 80, 84%, respect
