Objective Assessment of Pathological Voice Using Artificial Intelligence Based on the GRBAS Scale.

OBJECTIVES: The validity and reliability of the psychological assessment of auditory perceptions, as typified by the grade, roughness, breathiness, asthenia, and strain (GRBAS) scale, have been widely recognized. However, due to their subjective nature, inter- and intra-examiner reliability are unavoidable. In this study, we aimed to add objectivity to the GRBAS scale using artificial intelligence and to compare the accuracy of two methods-one based on Google's TensorFlow and another based on Apple's Core ML. METHODS: The GRBAS scale of 1,377 vowel samples was evaluated and used as training d

Receptive and productive speech and language abilities in hearing-impaired children with German as a second language.

OBJECTIVES: Many studies examining early bilingualism in migrant populations focus on the development of the first language. As language acquisition is closely related to the hearing development, there is a critical need to investigate language development in hearing-impaired children being raised bilingually who were fitted with cochlear implants and/or hearing aids. Therefore, this research project aimed to study the linguistic development of hearing-impaired children being raised with German as a second language who were provided with hearing aids or cochlear implants. Further, the language

Timing Of Primary Surgery for cleft palate (TOPS): protocol for a randomised trial of palate surgery at 6 months versus 12 months of age.

INTRODUCTION: Cleft palate is among the most common birth abnormalities. The success of primary surgery in the early months of life is crucial for successful feeding, speech, hearing, dental development and facial growth. Over recent decades, age at palatal surgery in infancy has reduced. This has led to palatal closure in one-stage procedures being carried out around the age of 12 months, but in some cases as early as 6 months. The primary objective of the Timing Of Primary Surgery for Cleft Palate (TOPS)trial is to determine whether surgery for cleft palate performed at 6 or 12 months of age

Single-ended prediction of listening effort using deep neural networks.

The effort required to listen to and understand noisy speech is an important factor in the evaluation of noise reduction schemes. This paper introduces a model for Listening Effort prediction from Acoustic Parameters (LEAP). The model is based on methods from automatic speech recognition, specifically on performance measures that quantify the degradation of phoneme posteriorgrams produced by a deep neural net: Noise or artifacts introduced by speech enhancement often result in a temporal smearing of phoneme representations, which is measured by comparison of phoneme vectors. This procedure doe

Relative importance of monaural sound deprivation and bilateral significant hearing loss in predicting cochlear implantation outcomes.

OBJECTIVES: Making evidence-based recommendations to prospective unilateral cochlear implant recipients on the potential benefits of implanting one or the other ear is challenging for cochlear implant teams. This particularly occurs in cases where a hearing aid has only been used in one ear for many years (referred to here as the "hearing ear"), and the contralateral ear has, in essence, been sound-deprived. In such cases, research to date is inconclusive, and little anecdotal evidence exists to inform the debate and support best clinical practice. DESIGN: Retrospective data on speech recogni

Voice outcomes after transoral laser microsurgery for early glottic cancer-considering signal type and smoothed cepstral peak prominence.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESES: This study proposed the use of signal typing and acoustic measures experimentally validated for aperiodic voices to investigate voice outcomes after transoral laser microsurgery (TLM) for early glottic carcinoma. It was of interest whether signal type and pitch-tracking indicators would reveal unreliable perturbation and noise measures. As an alternative, smoothed cepstral peak prominence (CPPS) was used for the first time in this population. STUDY DESIGN: A descriptive study of patients treated with TLM for early glottic carcinoma. METHODS: All participants (n=14) per

Vocal characteristics of middle-aged premenopausal women.

Aging influences the laryngeal anatomy and physiology, leading to altered vocal quality. In middle-aged women, the voice is affected by a combination of aging and menopausal transition. However, in many studies about vocal aging, the menopausal transition is not taken into account. The purpose of this study was to measure and describe the effect of aging on the vocal characteristics by comparing young women (between 20 and 28 years) and middle-aged premenopausal women (between 45 and 52 years). To determine the vocal characteristics in both groups, objective (aerodynamic measurements, vocal pe

Relative values of various standardized passages in the nasometric assessment of patients with velopharyngeal impairment.

A series of 155 patients referred for evaluation at the UNC Craniofacial Center was studied to compare nasometric performance data obtained from the Rainbow Passage to information provided when subjects read two other standardized passages (Zoo Passage and Nasal Sentences). Nasometric findings obtained using the three reading passages were compared to aerodynamic estimates of velopharyngeal area and nasal cross-sectional area as well as clinical judgments of hypernasality and hyponasality. The results suggest that the Rainbow Passage does not provide clinically relevant information that cannot
