This study aimed to compare clinical characteristics and outcomes in patients with native joint septic arthritis (NJSA) due to methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in comparison to methicillin-sensitive S. aureus (MSSA) and identify treatment failure risk factors. We conducted a multi-center retrospective study on adult NJSA patients at three teaching hospitals in South Korea from 2005 to 2017. Among 101 patients diagnosed with S. aureus NJSA, 39 (38.6%) had MRSA strains. Compared to MSSA, patients with MRSA had a higher prevalence of nosocomial infections (17.9% vs. 1.6%; p = 0.

The prevalence of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus pseudintermedius (MRSP) that causes pyoderma has been gradually shifting, according to many surveillance studies, with annual changes. The empirical cotrimazole regimen remains interesting, but research on cotrimazole susceptibility to MRSP is limited. The objective of this study was to evaluate the susceptibility of cotrimazole to canine pyoderma MRSP isolates. Sixty isolates of S. pseudintermedius were identified as 16 MRSP and 44 methicillin-susceptible S. pseudintermedius (MSSP) using an oxacillin disk diffusion test and VITEK 2 system

The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence and characterization of Staphylococcus aureus isolated from 145 shrimp samples from 39 cities in China. The results show that 41 samples (28%) from 24 cities were positive, and most of the positive samples (39/41, 95.1%) were less than 110 MPN/g. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing showed that only seven isolates were susceptible to all 24 antibiotics, whereas 65.1% were multidrug-resistant. Antibiotic resistance genes that confer resistance to β-lactams, aminoglycosides, tetracycline, macrolides, lincosamides and streptogramin B (MLSB), t

Staphylococcus (S.) aureus colonizes up to 30% of all humans and can occasionally cause serious infections. It is not restricted to humans as it can also often be found in livestock and wildlife. Recent studies have shown that wildlife strains of S. aureus usually belong to other clonal complexes than human strains and that they might differ significantly with regard to the prevalence of genes encoding antimicrobial resistance properties and virulence factors. Here, we describe a strain of S. aureus isolated from a European badger (Meles meles). For molecular characterisation, DNA microarray-b

The emergence of antimicrobial-resistant Staphylococcus aureus has become a grave concern worldwide. In this study, 95 strains of S. aureus isolated from stool samples were collected from Busan, South Korea to characterize their antimicrobial susceptibility, enterotoxin genes, and molecular typing using matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) and random amplification of polymorphic DNA (RAPD) assay. Only two strains showed no drug resistance, whereas resistance to three or more antibiotics was observed in 87.4% of strains. Ampicillin resistan

BACKGROUND: Antibiotics called macrolide, lincosamide and streptogramin B (MLSB) are being used to treat staphylococci infections. Multiple pathways that impart resistance to MLSB antibiotics have been confirmed to cause clinical failure. The present work aimed to determine the frequency of constitutive and inducible clindamycin resistant among coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS) isolates of different clinical samples in Al-Basrah governorate, Iraq.
METHODS: The 28 CoNS, traditional techniques and the Vitek®2 system were used to identify the isolates. The disk diffusion technique was used

Staphylococcus pettenkoferi is a recently described coagulase-negative Staphylococcus identified in human diseases, especially in infections of foot ulcers in patients living with diabetes mellitus. To date, its pathogenicity remains underexplored. In this study, whole-genome analysis was performed on a collection of 29 S. pettenkoferi clinical strains isolated from bloodstream and diabetic foot infections with regard to their phylogenetic relationships and comprehensive analysis of their resistome and virulome. Their virulence was explored by their ability to form biofilm, their growth kineti

The presence of co-infections or superinfections with bacterial pathogens in COVID-19 patients is associated with poor outcomes, including increased morbidity and mortality. We hypothesized that SARS-CoV-2 and its components interact with the biofilms generated by commensal bacteria, which may contribute to co-infections. This study employed crystal violet staining and particle-tracking microrheology to characterize the formation of biofilms by Streptococcus pneumoniae and Staphylococcus aureus that commonly cause secondary bacterial pneumonia. Microrheology analyses suggested that these biofi

AIM: To evaluate the antimicrobial capability of sclareol and its derivatives against Staphylococcus aureus and its Methicillin-resistant strain (MRSA).
METHODS AND RESULTS: A new series of Boron-Heck-coupled sclareol analogues were prepared by structural modifications at the C-15 terminal double bond of sclareol using ultrasonication. The structural modifications were designed to keep the stereochemistry of all the five chiral centres of sclareol intact. A two-step reaction scheme consisting of Boron-Heck coupling of sclareol followed by Wittig reaction was carried out to produce novel sclar

Abscess formation is one of the main symptoms of Staphylococcus aureus infection. It is very important to inhibit abscess formation for preventing S. aureus persistent infection. To find a feasible solution, the live oral vaccines delivering S. aureus antigens, rEsxAB and rHlam, were constructed, which were based on the attenuated regulated delayed lysis Salmonella enterica subspecies Serovar Typhimurium strain χ11802, and the inhibiting effect on abscess formation was evaluated in mice kidneys. As the results showed, after oral administration, humoral immunity was induced via the mucosal rout

INTRODUCTION: To promote judicious prescribing of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA)-active therapy for skin and soft tissue infections (SSTI), we previously developed an MRSA risk assessment tool. The objective of this study was to validate this risk assessment tool internationally.
METHODS: A multicenter, prospective cohort study of adults with purulent SSTI was performed at seven international sites from July 2016 to March 2018. Patient MRSA risk scores were computed as follows: MRSA infection/colonization history (2 points); previous hospitalization, previous antibiotics,

Nonhealing diabetic foot ulcers (DFU), a major complication of diabetes, are associated with high morbidity and mortality despite current standard of care. Since Staphylococcus aureus is the most common pathogen isolated from nonhealing and infected DFU, we hypothesized that S. aureus virulence factors would damage tissue, promote immune evasion and alter the microbiome, leading to bacterial persistence and delayed wound healing. In a diabetic mouse polymicrobial wound model with S. aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Streptococcus pyogenes, we report a rapid bacterial proliferation, prolonged

BACKGROUND: In veterinary medicine, three Staphylococcus species are of particular importance as primary causes of specific diseases; S. aureus (mastitis in ruminants, equine botryomycosis, and bumble foot in poultry), S. hycus (porcine exudative epidermitis), and S. intermedius (canine pyoderma). The disease conditions caused by Staphylococcus in poultry vary with site, route, and predisposing factors include wounds as a result of fighting/cannibalism, immunosuppression based on virus infection or parasite infestation, and bad husbandry conditions (overcrowding). The objectives of this study

Staphylococcus aureus causes a wide range of life-threatening infections. In this study, we determined its prevalence in the hospital environment and investigated nasal carriage among healthcare workers and patients admitted to a hospital in western Algeria. A total of 550 specimens were collected. An antibiogram was performed and the genes encoding resistance to methicillin, inducible clindamycin and toxins were sought among the 92 S. aureus isolates. The spread of clones with a methicillin- and/or clindamycin-resistance phenotype between these ecosystems was studied using genomic analysis. A

Antimicrobial Photodynamic Treatment (aPDT) is a non-thermal sterilization technology, which can inactivate common foodborne pathogens. In the present study, photodynamic inactivation on Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) with different concentrations of curcumin and light dose was evaluated and the mechanisms were also investigated. The results showed that curcumin-based aPDT could inactivate S. aureus cells by 6.9 log CFU/mL in phosphate buffered saline (PBS). Moreover, the modified Gompertz model presented a good fit at the inactivation data of S. aureus. Photodynamic treatment caused cell m

Rationale: The pathobiology of Staphylococcus aureus in non-cystic fibrosis bronchiectasis (nCFB) is poorly defined. When present at high density or "inoculum," some methicillin-sensitive S. aureus (MSSA) can inefficiently degrade antistaphylococcal β-lactam antibiotics via BlaZ penicillinases (termed the "inoculum effect" [IE]). Given the high burden of organisms in bronchiectatic airways, this is particularly relevant. Objectives: Drawing from a prospectively collected biobank, we sought to understand the prevalence, natural history, potential for transmission, and antibiotic resistance prof

The accurate and early diagnosis of infection is an important feature in the biomedical sciences for better treatment and to decrease the rate of morbidity associated with diseases. Doxycycline (DC) is a semisynthetic antibiotic that belongs to tetracycline family and usually prescribed to treat a variety of infections. The objective of the present research work was to develop a new radiopharmaceutical 99mTc-Doxycycline (99mTc-DC), by using SnCl2·2H2O as a reducing agent for diagnostic applications. It was confirmed through this study that 99mTc-DC possessed high radiolabeling yield (95%). In
