Incidence rates for a number of cancers in urban Shanghai, China, have been changing markedly. Herein we update the trends using population-based data from the Shanghai Cancer Registry for 1972-1994. We describe the combined use of laparoscopic and endoscopic techniques in a case of acute primary gastric volvulus. Once the diagnosis is confirmed with a water-soluble upper gastrointestinal series, prompt intervention is required. With an atraumatic bowel grasper the stomach is re-oriented with the greater curvature in its normal anatomic position. The clinical management of children who have swallowed foreign bodies presents a great challenge for both pediatricians and pediatric surgeons. Our 7-year experience of treating 141 patients with a history of foreign body ingestion is reported.
