Effects of 4-month Fe deficiency exposure on Fe reduction mechanism, photosynthetic gas exchange, chlorophyll fluorescence and antioxidant defense in two peach rootstocks differing in Fe deficiency tolerance.

Fe deficiency was imposed by omission of Fe (-Fe), or by inclusion of bicarbonate (supplied as 20 mM NaHCO3) in the nutrient solution in two contrasting peach rootstocks (GF-677; tolerant to Fe deficiency and Cadaman; sensitive to Fe deficiency) for 4 months. In the Fe-deprived leaves and roots, and especially in those treated with bicarbonate, a decrease in Fe concentrations was recorded. Omission of Fe resulted in an increase of the activity of root Fe(III)-chelate reductase (FCR) in both rootstocks, whereas FCR activity decreased in the bicarbonate-treated roots of Cadaman. The results obta

Crystal structure of the major histocompatibility complex class I H-2Kb molecule containing a single viral peptide: implications for peptide binding and T-cell receptor recognition.

To study the structure of a homogenous major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class I molecule containing a single bound peptide, a complex of recombinant mouse H-2Kb, beta 2-microglobulin (beta 2m), and a fragment of the vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV) nuclear capsid protein, VSV-(N52-59) octapeptide (Arg-Gly-Tyr-Val-Tyr-Gln-Gly-Leu), was prepared by exploiting a high-yield bacterial expression system and in vitro cocomplex formation. The structure of mouse H-2Kb revealed its similarity to three human class I HLA molecules, consistent with the high primary sequence homology and common functi

Radiation-induced oral mucositis: Correlation between clinician-assessed WHO grades and patient-reported outcomes, an exploratory prospective observational pilot study.

PURPOSE: Oral mucositis is a frequent, dose-limiting toxicity of chemoradiotherapy of head and neck cancer. Clinician-based grading such as the world health organization mucositis scale provides objective assessment of visible lesions, but patient-reported oral mucositis symptom scale capture the subjective functional impact, which may not always correspond with clinical findings. This pilot study examined the association between clinician grading and patient-reported measures and explored differences between benzydamine and bicarbonate rinses. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Twenty patients with head

From clinic to couch: a pilot study of home-use photobiomodulation for radiation-induced oral mucositis and dermatitis.

PURPOSE: Radiation-induced oral mucositis (OM) and dermatitis (RD) are common debilitating toxicities of radiotherapy (RT) for head and neck cancer (HNC) patients. While photobiomodulation (PBM) has shown promise in reducing severity of these adverse effects, in-clinic treatments pose logistic and financial challenges. This study assessed the feasibility and compliance of a home-use, self-applied near-infrared PBM device for the prevention and treatment of RT-induced OM and RD. METHODS: This prospective, single-arm trial enrolled 20 HNC patients scheduled for intensity-modulated RT (IMRT) wit

Application of machine learning for the analysis of peripheral blood biomarkers in oral mucosal diseases: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Oral mucosal lesions are widespread globally, have a high prevalence in clinical practice, and significantly impact patients' quality of life. However, their pathogenesis remains unclear. Recent evidences suggested that hematological parameters may play a role in their development. Our study investigated the differences in humoral immune indexes, serum vitamin B levels, and micronutrients among patients with oral mucosal lesions and healthy controls. Additionally, it evaluated a Random Forest machine learning model for classifying various oral mucosal diseases based on peripheral b

Assessment and prevalence of concomitant chemo-radiotherapy-induced oral mucositis in patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Quantification of oral mucositis that progresses during concomitant chemo-radiotherapy (CCRT) is essential for its management. It is important to determine the methods that are simple, reliable and beneficial in foreseeing mucositis at earlier stages of treatment. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A prospective study was conducted on 100 oral cancer patients receiving CCRT following the inclusion criteria. Patients were evaluated for mucositis i.e. erythema and ulcers by using the World Health Organization (WHO) scale and the oral mucositis assessment scale (OMAS), whereas mature and imm

A multicenter retrospective investigation on the efficacy of perioperative oral management in cancer patients.

Patients develop a number of oral complications during cancer treatments. Oral bacteria are associated with the onset of dental focal infections and the progression of oral mucositis. Dental focal infections are frequently associated with the systemic onset of bacteremia, sepsis, and pneumonia. The degeneration of oral function with these complications may become an obstacle to cancer treatments. Although comprehensive oral management, including oral care, the removal of dental focal infections, and improvements in oral function with dentures, is conducted for cancer patients in Japan, few stu

Modification of radiation-induced oral mucositis (mouse) by adult stem cell therapy: single-dose irradiation.

Early oral mucositis occurs in response to accidental upper partial body exposure as well as to radiotherapy in the head-and-neck region. This study was initiated to define the potential of mobilization of endogenous bone marrow (BM) stem cells by rHuG-CSF or of bone marrow transplantation (BMT) to reduce the effect of single-dose irradiation on mouse oral epithelium. A 3 × 3 mm(2) area of the lower tongue surface of mice was irradiated with graded single doses (day 0). Mucosal ulceration was used as the endpoint for dose-response analyses. Stem cells were mobilized by rHuG-CSF (8 times/4 days

UNLABELLED: The dental management of the elderly individual is becoming more of an issue in both general dental practice and specialist prosthodontic practice. This is because, in general, the population is living longer and often elderly patients are retaining their natural teeth into their old age. In addition, there are often related significant medical, social and oro-dental issues that require consideration. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: The dental management of the elderly patient is an increasing problem. This paper seeks to consider the main relevant issues pertaining to this important subject

[Radio-induced oral and pharyngeal mucositis: management updates].

Mucositis is a major side effect induced by radiotherapy and/or chemotherapy of head and neck cancer. This toxicity impacts patient's quality of life and may compromise optimal treatments. Pathophysiology, risk factors, incidence and consequences of mucositis will be discussed in this review. Its management remains principally supportive (pain medication and nutritional support); however, in recent years several studies have revealed that the use of low level energy laser is particularly useful in the prevention and treatment of chemo- and radio-induced mucositis.

Role of antioxidants in buccal mucosa cells and plasma on the incidence and severity of oral mucositis after allogeneic haematopoietic cell transplantation.

PURPOSE: Oral mucositis (OM) is known to be a significant complication of chemotherapy preceding haematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT). Antioxidants (AOX) scavenge free radicals, which play a major role in the initiation of OM and may reduce the OM risk. STUDY DESIGN: The primary objective of this prospective study was to investigate the association between the incidence and severity of OM (WHO oral toxicity scale) and the AOX status in buccal mucosa cells (BMC) and plasma. The α-tocopherol, ascorbic acid and ß-carotene concentrations in BMC and plasma were assessed at admission in 70 pat

[Massive alveolar hemorrhage due to cytomegalovirus (CMV) and HIV infection].

Alveolar hemorrhage may be a complication of diseases with local and systemic manifestations. Both share the same pathophysiological concept: damage to the alveolar microcirculation. It is a clinical entity that generates a diagnostic challenge for the physician. Early recognition favors aggressive treatment, which can improve the outcome. Despite the technological advances in its diagnosis and treatment, it is still a condition having high morbidity and mortality. We present the case of a 42-year old woman diagnosed of massive alveolar hemorrhage induced by cytomegalovirus (CMV) and HIV infec
