Recent studies have highlighted the involvement of the peripheral immune system in delayed cellular degeneration after stroke. In the permanent middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) model of stroke, the spleen decreases in size. This reduction occurs through the release of splenic immune cells. Systemic treatment with human umbilical cord blood cells (HUCBC) 24 h post-stroke blocks the reduction in spleen size while significantly reducing infarct volume. Splenectomy 2 weeks prior to MCAO also reduces infarct volume, further demonstrating the detrimental role of this organ in stroke-induced n

Accumulation of fluid as ascites is the most common complication of cirrhosis. This is occurring in about 50% of patients within 10 years of the diagnosis of cirrhosis. It is a prognostic sign with 1-year and 5-year survival of 85% and 56%, respectively. The most acceptable theory for ascites formation is peripheral arterial vasodilation leading to underfilling of circulatory volume. This triggers the baroreceptor-mediated activation of renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system, sympathetic nervous system and nonosmotic release of vasopressin to restore circulatory integrity. The result is an avid

Storage and periodic expulsion of urine is regulated by a neural control system in the brain and spinal cord that coordinates the reciprocal activity of two functional units in the lower urinary tract (LUT): (a) a reservoir (the urinary bladder) and (b) an outlet (bladder neck, urethra and striated muscles of the urethral sphincter). Control of the bladder and urethral outlet is dependent on three sets of peripheral nerves: parasympathetic, sympathetic and somatic nerves that contain afferent as well as efferent pathways. Afferent neurons innervating the bladder have A-delta or C-fibre axons.

It is well known that in pre-menopausal women the incidence of cardiovascular events is lower than in men of the same age and that after the menopause cardiovascular morbidity and mortality in women become similar, if not higher, than that in men indicating that female sex hormones play a relevant protective role upon the vasculature. Among the cardiovascular risk factors, hypertension appears to be more prevalent in postmenopausal women than in men but the precise mechanism through which menopause favours the development of hypertension is still a matter of debate. The prevalence of obesity a

Studies of acute cocaine cardiotoxicity are often confounded by the effects of cocaine on peripheral hemodynamics and an intact sympathetic nervous system. To study the direct effects of an acute dose of cocaine on heart, we used Langendorff-perfused isolated rabbit hearts. The hearts were attached to a Langendorff perfusion system through the aorta and were perfused with Krebs-Henseleit buffer. In nonpaced hearts, cocaine in concentrations of 10, 25, and 50 microM (reported to be in the range of drug concentrations lethal for humans) caused dose-dependent deterioration in heart contractility

Orthostatic challenge such as lower body suction (LBNP) or head-up tilt (HUT) induces marked shifts of blood from the cardiopulmonary into lower extremity vascular compartments. As a reaction to central hypovolemia, counterregulating mechanisms take place immediately, including central/peripheral circulatory responses and neurohumoral responses. Compensatory answers are exerted via autonomic reflexes, ie, cardiopulmonary and arterial baroreceptor mechanisms. The sympathetic nervous system increases heart rate and peripheral resistance to adjust the cardiovascular system to the stress situation

The effects of SK&F 86466 (6-chloro-N-methyl-2,3,4,5-tetrahydro-1-H-3-benzazepine), a potent and selective alpha-2 adrenoceptor antagonist, on blood pressure and heart rate were examined in normotensive and hypertensive rats. SK&F 86466 was approximately 10-fold more potent in lowering blood pressure in deoxycorticosterone acetate (DOCA)-salt hypertensive than in normotensive rats, when administered by i.v. infusion. A dose-related antihypertensive effect was observed in conscious DOCA-salt rats after p.o. doses of SK&F 86466 (2-15 mg/kg), with a duration of over 6 hr after the highest dose. O

This study was performed to examine the role played by the autonomic nervous system in the antiarrhythmic effects of magnesium sulfate (Mg) in a canine model of polymorphic ventricular tachyarrhythmia facilitated by anthopleurin-A and a slower heart rate induced QT interval prolongation. In 6 experiments, complete atrioventricular block was created to control the heart rate and bradycardia at 800- to 1500-ms cycle lengths was applied for 60 sec before and after drug-induced autonomic block. Transmural unipolar electrograms were recorded from multipolar needle electrodes, and activation-recover

Hypercaloric diet and obesity are strongly associated with cardiovascular dysfunction, diabetes and hypertension development mediated by sympathetic nervous system hyperactivity. In addition to the adrenergic system, purinergic signaling has emerged as a relevant modulator of cardiovascular physiopathology. However, its role in hypercaloric diet-induced cardiovascular dysfunction remains incompletely understood. In this study, we investigated the effects of a hypercaloric diet on metabolic parameters, atrial purinergic modulation and vascular reactivity. Rats fed the hypercaloric diet consumed

BACKGROUND: Prolonged smartphone use is associated with forward head posture, increased trapezius stiffness, and altered autonomic nervous system regulation. Dry cupping applies localized negative pressure-mediated mechanical stimulation that may influence myofascial properties and autonomic activity; however, its interactive effects of pressure and duration remain unclear. This study investigated the effects of different pressure and duration combinations of dry cupping on autonomic modulation indexed by heart rate variability (HRV) and trapezius tissue compliance in smartphone users.

There is sex difference of obesity and it might be related with sex hormones. For instance, estrogen regulates adipose tissue function and fat deposition by activation of the sympathetic nervous system, which leads to more adiposity in subcutaneous fat instead of visceral fat. There are strong evidences for the association between obesity and cancer, predominantly cancers of digestive organs including cardia gastric cancer (GC) and cancers of hormone sensitive organs in females. The main pathways linking obesity and cancer are hyperinsulinemia/insulin resistance and abnormalities of the insuli

The autonomic nervous system regulates cardiovascular activity during sleep, likely impacting cardiovascular health. Aging, a primary cardiovascular risk factor, is associated with cardiac autonomic disbalance and diminished sleep slow waves. Therefore, slow waves may be linked to aging, autonomic activity and cardiovascular health. However, it is unclear how sleep and slow waves are linked to cardiac autonomic profiles across multiple nights in older adults. We conducted a randomized, crossover trial involving healthy adults aged 62-78 years. Across 2 weeks, we applied auditory stimulation to

Mineral abnormalities are a common complication of heart failure (HF). In particular, dyskalaemia, hyponatraemia, and hypomagnesaemia are prevalent, with hypo- and hyperkalaemia observed in over 40 % of HF patients, hyponatraemia in 18-27 %, hypomagnesaemia in 7-52 %, and phosphate imbalance in 13 %. These abnormalities serve as indicators of the severity of HF and are strongly associated with an increased risk of morbidity and mortality. The neurohumoral activation, including the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS), the sympathetic nervous system, and vasopressin, HF medications such

PURPOSE: Exercise cardiac rehabilitation (CR) represents an evidence-based therapy for patients with heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) and this article provides a concise review of the relevant exercise testing and CR literature, including aspects unique to their care.
CLINICAL CONSIDERATIONS: A hallmark feature of HFrEF is exercise intolerance (eg, early-onset fatigue). Drug therapies for HFrEF target neurohormonal pathways to blunt negative remodeling of the cardiac architecture and restore favorable loading conditions. Guideline drug therapy includes β-adrenergic blockin

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Our previous study found carotid baroreceptor stimulation (CBS) reduces body weight and white adipose tissue (WAT) weight, restores abnormal secretion of adipocytokines and inflammation factors, decreases systolic blood pressure (SBP) by inhibiting activation of sympathetic nervous system (SNS) and renin-angiotensin system (RAS) in obese rats. In this study, we explore effects of CBS on aortic remodeling in obese rats.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Rats were fed high-fat diet (HFD) for 16 weeks to induce obesity and underwent either CBS device implantation and stimulation or sham o

Hepatorenal syndrome (HRS) occurs in patients with cirrhosis or fulminant hepatic failure and is a kind of pre-renal failure due to intense reduction of kidney perfusion induced by severe hepatic injury. While other causes of pre-renal acute kidney injury (AKI) respond to fluid infusion, HRS does not. HRS incidence is 5% in children with chronic liver conditions before liver transplantation. Type 1 HRS is an acute and rapidly progressive form that often develops after a precipitating factor, including gastrointestinal bleeding or spontaneous bacterial peritonitis, while type 2 is considered a

Hypertension is a major risk factor for many common chronic diseases, such as heart failure, myocardial infarction, stroke, vascular dementia, and chronic kidney disease. Pathophysiological mechanisms contributing to the development of hypertension include increased vascular resistance, determined in large part by reduced vascular diameter due to increased vascular contraction and arterial remodelling. These processes are regulated by complex-interacting systems such as the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system, sympathetic nervous system, immune activation, and oxidative stress, which influenc

Low birth weight serves as a crude proxy for impaired growth during fetal life and indicates a failure for the fetus to achieve its full growth potential. Low birth weight can occur in response to numerous etiologies that include complications during pregnancy, poor prenatal care, parental smoking, maternal alcohol consumption, or stress. Numerous epidemiological and experimental studies demonstrate that birth weight is inversely associated with blood pressure and coronary heart disease. Sex and age impact the developmental programming of hypertension. In addition, impaired growth during fetal

Hot flushes are complained of by approximately 75% of all postmenopausal women, and hormone therapy (HT) is the most effective way to alleviate them. Hot flushes are characterized by altered vascular function and sympathetic nervous system activity. Hot flushes occurred more often in women attending large, non-randomized observational studies (e.g. Nurses' Health Study), where HT use protected against cardiovascular disease (CVD). However, they were absent (or mild) in randomized HT trials where HT use was accompanied with an elevated risk for CVD. Hot flushes, if a factor for cardiovascular h
