BACKGROUND: Carpometacarpal (CMC) joint dislocations are rare, accounting for less than 1% of all hand injuries. They result from direct high-energy blows to the hand, i.e. falls on the outstretched hand, falls from bicycles or punching one's fist against an object. The objective of this case-series study was to analyse the results of treatment of these injuries in 6 patients who presented to the author's institution.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: In the 3-year period between 2021 and 2023, a total of 6 male patients, mean age of 39 years, with CMC joints dislocations were treated. Three patients had

The Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) is a randomized national U.S. telephone survey administered by state health departments. This study aimed to identify how Black/African Americans understand BRFSS caregiver and cognitive decline surveys and terminology to inform health messaging that centers the Black/African American experience. In focus groups, BRFSS surveys were administered to Black/African Americans (n = 30) aged ≥ 45 in Oregon. Participants were asked how they interpreted BRFSS terms 'memory loss' and 'confusion,' how these terms related to Alzheimer's and dementia,

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: Oral anticoagulation (OAC) with non-vitamin K antagonist oral anticoagulants (NOACs) after surgical mitral valve repair (MVR) or bioprosthetic valve replacement (BVR) in mitral position remains a controversial topic among the cardiovascular community, in particular in the early postoperative period. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of NOACs in the first three months after MVR or mitral BVR compared to vitamin K antagonists (VKAs).
METHODS: This was a single-center retrospective study with prospectively collected peri-intervention outcomes betwe

AIMS: The management of patients treated with direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) during hospitalization is a common challenge in clinical practice. Although bridging is generally not recommended, too often DOACs are switched to parenteral therapy with low molecular weight heparins. Our objectives were to update a local guideline for perioperative DOAC management and to develop a guideline for the anticoagulation management in non-surgical patients regarding temporary DOAC discontinuation.
METHODS: We executed a two-step modified Delphi study in a 1000-bed university hospital in Belgium. The D

BACKGROUND: Group prenatal care (GPC) has been shown to have a positive impact on social support, patient knowledge and preparedness for birth. We developed an interprofessional hybrid model of care whereby the group perinatal care (GPPC) component was co-facilitated by midwives (MW) and family medicine residents (FMR) and alternating individual visits were provided by family physicians (FP's) within our academic family health team (FHT) In this qualitative study, we sought to explore the impact of this program and how it supports patients through pregnancy and the early newborn period.

Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is associated with adverse health outcomes for the pregnant individual and their baby. Screening approaches for GDM have undergone several iterations, introducing variability in practice among healthcare providers. As such, our study aimed to explore the views of antenatal providers regarding their practices of, and counseling experiences on the topic of, GDM screening in Ontario. We conducted a qualitative, grounded theory study. The study population included antenatal providers (midwives, family physicians, and obstetricians) practicing in Hamilton, Ottawa

Women Veterans constitute a distinctive cohort whose exposure to military service can contribute to development of bladder conditions, such as urinary incontinence (UI), as they age. Behavioral therapies are recommended as first-line treatment for incontinence, yet many VA Medical Centers do not have staff trained to administer them. The purpose of this research study was to conduct a qualitative program evaluation of MyHealtheBladder, a mobile telehealth version of an evidence-based eight-week behavioral treatment program designed for women Veterans with incontinence. MyHealtheBladder uses mo

BACKGROUND: There is little information regarding complications of arterial catheterization in modern clinical care. We aimed to determine the incidence of abnormal duplex vascular ultrasound and catheter related infections following perioperative arterial catheterization.
METHODS: Patients requiring arterial catheterization for elective surgery were included and insertion details collected prospectively. Duplex ultrasound evaluation was performed 24 h after catheter removal. Symptomatic patients were identified by self-reported questionnaire. On Day 7, patients answered questions by telephon

BACKGROUND: Sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV), including rape and child sexual abuse, remains a significant challenge in post-conflict northern Uganda. Many victims have never sought help. Consequently, the scale of the problem is not known, and SGBV victims' injuries, both psychological and physical, remain hidden and unresolved.
OBJECTIVES: We aimed to explore whether health workers in rural Reproductive Health Services (RHS), following specific training, could provide a valuable resource for SGBV screening and subsequent referral to targeted services.
METHODS: Our project had three

BACKGROUND: Premenopausal women with early stage, high risk hormone receptor positive breast cancer are at risk of early discontinuation of adjuvant endocrine therapy (ET), primarily because of toxicity, which can increase the risk of disease recurrence and death. We hypothesize that identification of bothersome symptoms between clinic visits, and automated notification of clinicians about symptoms, will result in improved persistence with ET.
METHODS: Pre- and perimenopausal women planning to receive adjuvant treatment with tamoxifen or an aromatase inhibitor plus ovarian function suppressio

OBJECTIVE: National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) guidance for the management of neonatal sepsis recommends a first-line antibiotic regimen containing an aminoglycoside (gentamicin). Aminoglycoside exposure causes sensorineural hearing loss in individuals with a specific mitochondrial genetic variant (m.1555A>G). This variant can be detected promptly (in <30 min) by a point of care test. NICE does allow for variation in antibiotic regimes depending on local microbiology guidance. As practices can vary, this survey aimed to determine the current use of first-line antibiotic agents wi

BACKGROUND: Timely and reliable dispensing of buprenorphine is critical to accessing treatment for opioid use disorder (OUD). Racial and ethnic inequities in OUD treatment access are well described, but it remains unclear if inequities persist at the point of dispensing.
METHODS: We analyzed data from a U.S. telephone audit that measured restricted buprenorphine dispensing in community pharmacies, defined as inability to fill a buprenorphine prescription requested by a "secret shopper." Using the Index of Concentration at the Extremes (ICE), we constructed county-level measures of racial, eth

INTRODUCTION: From 2019-2021, overdose deaths among youth and young adults ages 10-19 years of age residing in the United States increased by 109 %. We sought to examine the extent to which youth and young adults who have experience with substance use are aware of the harm reduction policies and interventions, including the statewide Good Samaritan Law (GSL), naloxone, and fentanyl test strips, and have access to naloxone and fentanyl test strips.
METHODS: From December 2022 to February 2023, we conducted a cross-sectional telephone survey of individuals ages 12-25 years who resided in North

AIM: Sacral neuromodulation (SNM) has become a standard surgical treatment for faecal incontinence (FI). Prior studies have reported various adverse events of SNM, including suboptimal therapeutic response, infection, pain, haematoma, and potential need for redo SNM. The aim of this study was to identify the risk factors associated with long-term complications of SNM.
METHOD: This retrospective cohort reviewed patients who underwent two-stage SNM for FI at our institution between 2011-2021. Preoperative baseline characteristics and follow-up were obtained from the medical record and/or by tel

INTRODUCTION: Distal radius fractures are common injuries managed frequently in emergency departments. While numerous studies focus on the surgical treatment of distal radius fractures, there is a lack of research about non-surgically treated patients' early experiences post-injury. The objective of this study was to explore adult patients' initial experiences following closed reduction treatment of distal radius fracture in the emergency department.
METHODS: This qualitative study involved semi-structured telephone interviews with 21 patients who underwent closed-reduction treatment at 2 hos
