Over a two-year period, 37 patients with genital ulcer disease attending a clinic for sexually transmitted diseases in Harare were found to have donovanosis. Of the 37 patients, 25 were male, and 12 were female; all presented with painless, indurated, granulating ulcers without lymph-node involvement. The lesions were more extensive in pregnant women. All patients responded well to either a combination of intramuscular streptomycin plus oral tetracycline given over 14 days, or a 14-day course of oral co-trimoxazole (trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole). No metastatic lesions were found.

Due to an increase in the number of cases of spotted fever, a prospective study was undertaken in 31 children affected by the disease, including clinical, laboratory and microbiological data from may to october of 1983. Chlamydia trachomatis, Ureaplasma urealyticum and Mycoplasma hominis are frequently demonstrated in cases of acute gonorrhoeic urethritis. Among 143 males (average age 22.5 years) Chlamydia was demonstrated in 29%, U. urealyticum in 34% and M. hominis in 13%. Penicillin treatment of gonorrhoea does not affect Chlamydia and Mycoplasma so that these organisms will persist in the lower urogenital tract. The records of 1,381 patients with gonorrhea were examined by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health to determine the efficacy of their treatment schedules. Urethritis, cervicitis and pharyngitis were treated with 4.8 million u. of aqueous procaine penicillin G intramuscularly, without probenecid. Cure rates were 98 percent in urethritis, 97 percent in pharyngitis and 98 percent in cervicitis. Nongonococcal urethritis (NGU) and its counterparts in women are the most common sexually transmitted disease syndromes in the United States and Western Europe. Chlamydiae are obligate intracellular parasites, bacteria with a peculiar biology. They belong to the genus Chlamydia which includes two species: C. psittaci and C. trachomatis. A wide range of hosts, including birds, mammals and man can be infected by chlamydiae. The activity of rifampicin was compared with that of tetracycline, ampicillin, penicillin G, chloramphenicol, gentamicin and sulphadiazine in vitro and in experiments on mice infected with various strains of Listeria monocytogenes. The influence of tsutsugamushi fever infection on the metabolism of blood lymphocytes of mice differing in susceptibility to Rickettsia tsutsugamushi and of rifampicine and tetracycline treatment was studied. In an avulsed tooth with an open apex, a recommended procedure is to coat the root surface with topical doxycycline before reimplantation.
