Faculty-Led Study Abroad Programs and Learning Sustainability: A Southeast Asian Context.

As a widely offered course in International Relations (IR) programs, the teaching and learning of Southeast Asian Regional Dynamics (SARD) struggles to adopt a pedagogical strategy that counters stagnancy and passive learning. The problem is exacerbated when SARD courses discuss topics of sustainability in Southeast Asia, which obligates instructors to introduce complex empirical cases that may be difficult for students to grasp. As a means to ignite the students' interests and allow a platform in which students can see directly the issues that defy sustainable development in the region, this

Mental health and psychological processes associated with cognitive aging and dementia.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review focuses on the role of psychological factors in cognitive aging and dementia, an area that has received less attention compared to other modifiable factors (e.g. sleep, physical activity, and so on) or reduction of disease risk. RECENT FINDINGS: A range of mental health and psychological aspects, including clinical symptoms, stable personality traits, and more specific constructs or processes (e.g. repetitive negative thinking, purpose in life), are associated with cognitive aging and dementia risk. Psychological factors can either serve as protective or risk el

Alzheimer's Disease Diagnosis in the Preclinical Stage: Normal Aging or Dementia.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) progressively impairs the memory and thinking skills of patients, resulting in a significant global economic and social burden each year. However, diagnosis of this neurodegenerative disorder can be challenging, particularly in the early stages of developing cognitive decline. Current clinical techniques are expensive, laborious, and invasive, which hinders comprehensive studies on Alzheimer's biomarkers and the development of efficient devices for Point-of-Care testing (POCT) applications. To address these limitations, researchers have been investigating various biose

BNIP3L/NIX-mediated mitophagy: Future directions in Alzheimer's disease.

BCL2-interacting protein 3 like (BNIP3L) /Nip3-like protein X (NIX) is a mitochondrial outer membrane protein possessing mitophagic and pro-apoptotic properties. Mitochondrial dysfunction and subsequent mitophagy impairment are some of the early triggers for Alzheimer's Disease (AD), which is a progressive neurodegenerative condition affecting memory, thinking, and behavior. AD is associated with mitochondrial protein impairment and mitophagy failure. A recent study showed downregulation in BNIP3L expression in response to stress hormone release during Alzheimer's, and pretreatment with a BNIP

Why do individuals with generalized anxiety disorder and depression engage in worry and rumination? A momentary assessment study of positive contrast enhancement.

The contrast avoidance model suggests that individuals with generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) use worry to sustain negative emotionality and thus avoid a sharp increase in negative emotion. Maintenance of negative mood increases the probability of subsequent decreased negative and increased positive affect (positive emotional contrast; PEC) when worrisome outcomes are better than expected. However, occurrence of PECs via increased positive affect and its application to rumination are unclear. Using a momentary assessment design, we examined effects of worry/rumination on PECs associated with

Resting state connectivity patterns associated with trait anxiety in adolescence.

Anxiety symptoms occur more frequently during adolescence and early adulthood, increasing the risk of future anxiety disorders. Neuroscientific research on anxiety has primarily focused on adulthood, employing mostly univariate approaches, discounting large-scale alterations of the brain. Indeed adolescents with trait anxiety may display similar abnormalities shown by adults in brain regions ascribed to the default mode network, associated with self-referential thinking and rumination-related processes. The present study aims to explore resting-state connectivity patterns associated with trait

Altercentrism and a change in perspective on the self: The relationships of visuospatial perspective-taking with rumination and mindfulness.

Rumination, a dysfunctional way of thinking, can be counteracted by mindfulness. One leading mechanism through which mindfulness works is a change in perspective on the self, i.e., looking at one's own mental contents from a decentered perspective. Here, we tested whether a change in perspective on the self is grounded in a well-known cognitive capacity, visuospatial perspective-taking (VSPT), allowing individuals to adopt another's visuospatial viewpoint. We measured rumination and dispositional mindfulness through self-report questionnaires and evaluated VSPT using a task requiring participa

Counterexample to Luminescent Metal Nanocluster Paradigm: Reactive Au(I) Complexes from His-Au(III) Synthetic Reactions and Their Chemistry for Direct Analysis of d-Penicillamine.

There is a widely accepted material characterization paradigm in the success of synthesis of luminescent metal nanoclusters (NCs) in the aqueous phase: new emission, metal reduction, and ultrasmall particles (size < 3 nm). Herein, we falsified well-known fluorescent histidine (His)-directed Au NCs and a new model of metastable His-Au(I) complexes with emissive His oxidation products has been established. The redox reaction of His and Au(III) yields His oligomers with blue-green fluorescence and reducible Au(I) self-assemblies, which can form ultrasmall particles at electron bombardment. The re
