INTRODUCTION: The use of Hormone Dosage (HD) in Fine Needle Aspiration Biopsy (FNA) needle washout fluid, introduced in the 1990s, initially aimed at measuring Thyroglobulin (TG). Elevated TG concentration in an extrathyroidal cervical lesion suggests metastases of Well-Differentiated Thyroid Carcinomas (WDTC). Over the years, HD has evolved to incorporate Calcitonin (CT) and Parathormone (PTH), improving sensitivity and specificity in diverse clinical scenarios. Despite varying cutoffs in the literature, existing data underscore significant advancements in diagnostic accuracy.

Thyroglossal duct cysts (TGDCs) are unusual remnants of the thyroid gland that are rarely observed in association with carcinoma. The present study aimed to showcase the clinical characteristics, diagnosis and management of patients with TGDC carcinoma. It was a single-center study conducted from February 2016 to February 2020. The study involved the retrospective analysis of a series of cases with TGDC carcinoma. A total of 10 patients were included in the study, of whom eight (80%) were females. Their age ranged from 25 to 48 years with a mean age of 39.1 years. A total of five cases (50%) u

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: The dogma is that normal parathyroid glands (PTGs) are not visible on ultrasound (US). Recently, several studies have shown that PTGs present these US features: ovoid structure, homogeneous and hyperechoic. The primary objective was to assess the detection rate, standard size and locations of normal PTGs in a population of patients consulting for thyroid US exam. The secondary objective was to determine if the presence of a goiter or a thyroiditis could modify the visualization of normal PTGs.
METHOD: Single-center prospective study on 192 patients based on the typic

INTRODUCTION: Perchlorates are ionic inhibitors antagonizing iodine transport into thyrocytes, hampering thyroid hormone synthesis. Nevertheless, perchlorates are not considered as first-line treatment in hyperthyroidism and thyrotoxicosis as compared to other pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions.
AIM: Reassessing the therapeutic role of perchlorates in hyperthyroidism and thyrotoxicosis throughout a systematic review of the Literature.
METHODS: Guidelines were searched and examined to summarize current recommendations on the use of perchlorates in the management of hyperthy

PURPOSE: Graves' disease (GD) is an auto-immune cause of hyperthyroidism. First-line treatment often consists of a 12-18 month course of antithyroid drugs (ATD). After discontinuation of ATD, GD relapses in approximately 50% of patients. The 'Graves recurrent event after therapy+ ' (GREAT+) score may predict individual relapse chances after ATD discontinuation more accurately based on clinical and laboratory parameters at diagnosis. We investigated the need for the GREAT+ score through an online questionnaire among GD patients and physicians treating GD.
METHODS: An anonymous online questionn

Ovarian goiter that meets the diagnostic criteria for malignant thyroid tumors or has invasive distant metastasis is called malignant struma ovarii (MSO). The incidence of MSO is very low. The level of serum thyroglobulin (Tg) is helpful to differentiate MSO with highly differentiated pathological type from other ovarian malignancies. But its therapeutic method is currently debated. Herein, we present a case of 54 years old woman, who was admitted to hospital due to frequent abdominal pain for 9 months and with normal serum Tg. Postoperative pathological examination revealed highly differentia

A 36-year-old woman with a history of neck swelling was diagnosed with papillary thyroid carcinoma, a common but typically slow-growing thyroid cancer with a good prognosis. Despite frequent lymph node metastasis, mortality rates are low. This cancer can rarely spread to unusual areas like the axillary region. The patient had multiple nodules in her thyroid and metastasis to cervical lymph nodes. After a total thyroidectomy and neck dissection, 14 metastatic lymph nodes were found. Post-surgery, radioactive iodine treatment and a whole-body scan revealed axillary lymph node involvement, confir

Background/Objectives: Thyroid carcinoma, presenting as a lateral neck mass without an identifiable primary tumor within the thyroid, poses a diagnostic challenge. This comparative analysis aimed to explore the differences between metastatic thyroid carcinoma and ectopic thyroid carcinoma, as both present with a lateral neck mass without evidence of primary thyroid carcinoma. Methods: Searches were conducted for studies on thyroid carcinoma in the lateral neck without evidence of primary thyroid carcinoma. A total of 39 patients were identified from 32 reported studies. Results: Metastatic and

The thyroid gland's neurovascular relationship is commonly portrayed as the recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) coursing posteriorly to the thyroid gland. We report a rare case with the RLN running anteriorly to a thyroid tumor. A 56-year-old Japanese woman underwent a thyroidectomy for a benign thyroid tumor. Preoperatively, computed tomography confirmed that part of the tumor had extended into the mediastinum and was descending posteriorly up to the brachiocephalic artery. Intraoperatively, when the sternothyroid muscle was incised to expose the thyroid gland, a cord (nerve)-like structure was o

BACKGROUND The article discusses an unusual case of papillary thyroid carcinoma in which chronic cough and hemoptysis were the predominant symptoms. While the more common causes of hemoptysis are pulmonary in origin, extrapulmonary etiologies have been reported, including thyroid carcinoma. The clinical presentation of thyroid malignancy in this case mimics many other common disorders, such as pulmonary tuberculosis, bronchogenic carcinoma, bronchiectasis, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Hence, making it challenging to suspect early when patients present to primary care. CASE REPORT

It is crucial for doctors to decide whether a thyroid nodule is benign or malignant when a patient presents with one, as it will significantly impact how the patient is managed in the future. However, it is not as straightforward to determine between the two; even a physical examination, thyroid function test, ultrasonography, and biopsy have been well performed. It can be more stressful if a patient has an increased risk of malignancy, such as age (below 20- and above 60-year-old), solid nodule, rapid growth, hoarseness, lymphadenopathy, and microcalcifications on the ultrasonography. The aim

UNLABELLED: Metastasis of squamous cell lung carcinoma to the thyroid gland is an extremely rare event. It frequently metastasizes to lymph nodes, liver, adrenal glands, bone, brain, and pleura. Among the lung carcinomas metastasizing to the thyroid, adenocarcinomas are the most common followed by squamous cell carcinomas (SCCs).
CASE PRESENTATION: A 58-year-old male patient presented with bilateral neck swelling. Fine needle aspiration is performed and was undetermined. Ultrasonography of the neck demonstrated multiple hypoechoic nodules with thyroid enlargement. The patient was diagnosed wi

Resistance to thyroid hormone (RTH) is a syndrome characterized by impaired responsiveness of target tissues to thyroid hormones. The relationship between RTHβ and thyroid autoimmunity has been under research. In this study, we demonstrate a case report of a woman with a novel mutation in THRβ gene coexisting with autoimmune thyroid disease (AITD). The 36-year-old woman has been treated since childhood for a thyroid disease. Based on high levels of thyroid hormones (THs) and elevated concentrations of thyroperoxidase and thyroglobulin antibodies (TPOAb and TgAb, respectively), she received unn

Hypercalcitoninaemia has been described in patients with pseudohypoparathyroidism (PHP) type 1A and 1B. Elevated calcitonin levels are thought to result from impaired Gsα receptor signaling, leading to multiple hormone resistance. Evidence on the risk of medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) or C-cell hyperplasia in PHP patients with hypercalcitoninaemia is lacking. A 43-year-old Caucasian man was referred to our endocrinology clinic for chronic hypocalcemia associated with elevated serum parathormone levels and a single cystic thyroid nodule. The patient did not show skeletal deformities, and scr

BACKGROUND: Mesh plug (MP) erosion into the intra-abdominal organs is a rare but serious long-term complication after inguinal hernia repair (IHR), and may lead to aggravation of symptoms if not treated promptly. It is difficult to diagnose MP erosion as there are no obvious specific clinical manifestations, and surgery is often needed for confirmation. In recent years, with the increased understanding of postoperative complications, MP eroding into the intra-abdominal organs has been a cause for concern among surgeons.

INTRODUCTION: Sarcoma as a cause of laryngeal cancer is rare and is even rarer to have an Ewing sarcoma out of the bone presents as laryngeal cancer. In this report, we present this extremely rare case.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 41-year-old man was seen at the ENT clinic complaining of chronic hoarseness and a lump in his neck. Flexible laryngoscopy showed a large mass occupying the left side of the larynx and then a computerized tomography scan proved it. For further evaluation, the laryngoscopy was performed and the frozen section revealed a malignancy. Consequently, the surgical decision was ta

OBJECTIVE: We analysed the diagnostic performance of thyroglobulin in fine-needle aspiration (FNA-Tg) in the suspicious lateral cervical lymph nodes (CLNs) in patients with papillary thyroid cancer (PTC), proposed the best cutoff value and discussed the factors that may affect the diagnostic value of FNA-Tg.
METHODS: In the present study, a retrospective analysis of 403 patients with PTC with 448 suspected lateral CLNs metastasis from October 2019 to May 2021 was performed. The cutoff value according to the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was determined, and the Wilcoxon rank-su

This narrative report summarizes diagnostic criteria for hypoparathyroidism and describes the clinical presentation and underlying genetic causes of the nonsurgical forms. We conducted a comprehensive literature search from January 2000 to January 2021 and included landmark articles before 2000, presenting a comprehensive update of these topics and suggesting a research agenda to improve diagnosis and, eventually, the prognosis of the disease. Hypoparathyroidism, which is characterized by insufficient secretion of parathyroid hormone (PTH) leading to hypocalcemia, is diagnosed on biochemical g

Graves disease (GD) is the most common cause of hyperthyroidism, accounting for more than 90% of cases in Korea. Patients with GD are treated with any of the following: antithyroid drugs (ATDs), radioactive iodine (RAI) therapy, or thyroidectomy. Most patients begin treatment with ATDs, and clinical guidelines suggest that the appropriate treatment period is 12 to 18 months. While RAI treatment and surgery manage thyrotoxicosis by destroying or removing thyroid tissue, ATDs control thyrotoxicosis by inhibiting thyroid hormone synthesis and preserving the thyroid gland. Although ATDs efficientl
