The role of mycobacteria and the effect of proteolytic degradation of thyroglobulin on the production of autoimmune thyroiditis.

Data are presented which suggest that the initial event involved in experimental autoimmune thyroiditis following injection of rabbits with homologous thyroglobulin in complete Freund's adjuvant is alteration of the thyroglobulin. Alteration of the thyroglobulin does not occur during incorporation into the adjuvant or in vitro storage in the adjuvant, and the mycobacteria in the adjuvant have no direct effect on the thyroglobulin. Most likely, the alteration results from an increase in hydrogen ion concentration within cells or local areas in the granuloma and the subsequent action of proteoly

Impact of Reclassification on Thyroid Nodules with Architectural Atypia: From Non-Invasive Encapsulated Follicular Variant Papillary Thyroid Carcinomas to Non-Invasive Follicular Thyroid Neoplasm with Papillary-Like Nuclear Features.

BACKGROUND: The follicular variant of papillary thyroid cancer (FVPTC), especially the encapsulated non-invasive subtype, is a controversial entity. Recent study suggested using 'non-invasive follicular thyroid neoplasm with papillary-like nuclear features (NIFTP)' for these indolent carcinomas. We evaluated the impact of reclassification from non-invasive encapsulated FVPTCs (EFVPTCs) to NIFTPs in the diagnosis of thyroid nodules with architectural atypia. METHODS: We reviewed 1301 thyroid nodules with architectural atypia in core needle biopsy (CNB) specimens obtained from March 2012 to Feb

Comparative Performance of the 2015 and 2025 American Thyroid Association Initial Recurrence Risk Stratification Systems in Differentiated Thyroid Cancer.

BACKGROUND: The 2025 American Thyroid Association (ATA) guidelines introduced significant modifications to the initial risk stratification system for differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC). However, the real-world prognostic performance and stage migration effects of these updates compared with the 2015 system remain unevaluated. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study at a tertiary referral center in China. Adult patients who underwent initial thyroidectomy for pathologically confirmed DTC between January 2008 and December 2018 were included, with follow-up extending through October

Gasless endoscopic thyroidectomy via the trans-subclavian approach versus conventional open thyroid surgery for unilateral thyroid cancer.

The incidence of papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) is increasing worldwide. With advancements in society and technology, the variety of thyroid endoscopic surgeries is expanding. Gasless endoscopic thyroidectomy via the trans-subclavian approach (GETTSA) has been used for many years; yet, relevant research data are limited. This study aimed to assess the reliability of GETTSA by comparing it with conventional open thyroid surgery (COT). Clinical data were collected from 488 patients who underwent unilateral PTC surgery at Yantai Yuhuangding Hospital. Based on propensity score matching, relevan

Effects of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances on maternal thyroid function: a stratified analysis by maternal iodine status and thyroid autoantibody status.

BACKGROUND: Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) are persistent environmental pollutants with bioaccumulative properties. Emerging evidence indicates that PFAS disrupts thyroid hormone homeostasis, potentially leading to thyroid dysfunction and impairing physiological functions. However, the associations between PFAS exposure, iodine status, and thyroid function during pregnancy remain insufficiently understood. METHODS: A total of 911 pregnant women from a birth cohort in Zhejiang Province were included. Serum concentrations of 13 PFASs and thyroid function parameters were measured du

Role of Serum Triiodothyronine-to-Thyroxine Ratio and Thyroid Colour Flow Doppler in Differentiation of Graves' Disease from Destructive Thyroiditis.

INTRODUCTION: Thyrotoxicosis is characterised by abnormally elevated circulating level of thyroid hormones. The most common aetiologies of thyrotoxicosis are Graves' disease (GD) and destructive thyroiditis (DT). The correct diagnosis of thyrotoxicosis is crucial for appropriate management. Thyroid scan and thyrotropin receptor antibody (TSH-RAb) measurement are the modalities of choice for differentiating GD from DT. However, these modalities are limited by their high cost and availability. Colour flow Doppler ultrasound (CFDU) of the thyroid is inexpensive, safe, and readily available. This

Association Between the Levothyroxine Therapy and the Levels of Anti-Thyroid Antibodies in Women with Hypothyroidism Due to Hashimoto's Thyroiditis-Narrative Review.

Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT) is one of the most common autoimmune disorders with a complex etiology and pathogenesis, representing a significant challenge for medicine. Current pharmacological management of HT focuses on the treatment of hypothyroidism rather than addressing the underlying cause. Available scientific evidence provides limited and inconsistent data regarding the association between levothyroxine (L-T4), its dosage, and the levels of antibodies against thyroid peroxidase (anti-TPO) and thyroglobulin (anti-TG) in women with HT. Therefore, the aim of the study was to summarize cur

Comprehensive Proteomics and Machine Learning Analysis to Distinguish Follicular Adenoma and Follicular Thyroid Carcinoma from Indeterminate Thyroid Nodules.

BACKGRUOUND: The preoperative diagnosis of follicular thyroid carcinoma (FTC) is challenging because it cannot be readily distinguished from follicular adenoma (FA) or benign follicular nodular disease (FND) using the sonographic and cytological features typically employed in clinical practice. METHODS: We employed comprehensive proteomics and machine learning (ML) models to identify novel diagnostic biomarkers capable of classifying three subtypes: FTC, FA, and FND. Bottom-up proteomics techniques were applied to quantify proteins in formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded (FFPE) thyroid tissues.

Psychological factors and obesity, not thyroid biomarkers, predict thyroid-dependent quality of life in treated hypothyroidism: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: A significant number of patients with primary hypothyroidism report persistent symptoms and decreased quality of life (QoL) despite biochemically adequate levothyroxine replacement. Individual variations in thyroxine conversion, autoimmune inflammation, and psychological factors have all been implicated as a potential cause. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study we have examined the association of numerous demographic, disease-specific, and laboratory parameters as well as three patient reported outcome measures with thyroid-dependent QoL as measured by the Underactive Thyroid-De

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons as potential risk factors for thyroid cancer: Epidemiological evidence of urinary metabolites and thyroid-related hormones.

Thyroid cancer (TC) is a common malignant tumor of the endocrine system, with a markedly higher incidence in females. While radiation exposure remains the only proven exogenous risk factor, growing evidence implicates environmental pollutants in TC pathogenesis. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are endocrine-disrupting chemicals with well-established carcinogenicity. However, epidemiological studies linking PAH exposure to TC risk are still insufficient. In this study, 116 patients with TC and 132 healthy adults were recruited in Guangdong Province, China, to assess the association betw
