Quantitative analysis of urinary volatile organic compounds by headspace solid-phase microextraction coupled to gas chromatography - mass spectrometry under low sample volume conditions.

In this work, a low-sample-volume analytical method based on headspace solid-phase microextraction (HS-SPME) coupled with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) was developed and evaluated for the targeted quantification of selected volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in urine samples. Optimization of HS-SPME conditions was performed using a Box-Behnken design to evaluate the effects of incubation temperature, incubation time, and extraction time, with temperature and extraction time emerging as the most significant factors. A confirmatory experiment supported shortening the model-derived

Experts Perspectives on Current Practices and Challenges of Diagnosis and Treatment of Dry Eye Disease across Europe and Central Asia.

INTRODUCTION: Dry eye disease (DED) is a multifactorial disease of the ocular surface characterized by a loss of homeostasis of the tear film, and accompanied by ocular symptoms, in which tear film instability and hyperosmolarity, ocular surface inflammation and damage, and neurosensory abnormalities play etiological roles. Affecting up to 60% of individuals worldwide, DED imposes a significant physical, psychosocial, and economic burden. Its diagnosis remains challenging owing to heterogeneous clinical presentations, poor correlation between signs and symptoms, and limited access to advanced

Caregiver-reported relevance of the BRIEF-2 in youth with Down syndrome: an initial content validity study.

BACKGROUND: Establishing evidence of content validity, or how well a measure reflects the intended outcome, is essential for developing or selecting assessment tools that support individualized care and research in clinical populations like Down syndrome (DS). This study aimed to examine caregiver-reported relevance of a widely used measure of executive function in school-aged youth with DS, the Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function, Second Edition (BRIEF-2), Parent Form. Specifically, this study focused on one aspect of content validity, relevance to the target population, which has

Analysis of stress distribution around conventional and basal dental implants in the posterior mandible: A finite element study.

BACKGROUND: Dental implants have become a widely accepted solution for the replacement of missing teeth, offering functional and esthetic benefits. The long-term success of dental implants largely depends on the distribution of stresses in the surrounding bone, as excessive stress can lead to bone resorption and implant failure. Finite element analysis (FEA) is a powerful tool that allows for the simulation of mechanical behavior under functional loading, providing insights into stress patterns and implant performance in various anatomical and prosthetic configurations. AIM: The aim of the st

Maternal depressive symptoms and their association with child maltreatment behaviors in middle-childhood: evidence from rural Bangladesh.

Child maltreatment is a major global public health concern, yet its burden remains underreported in low- and middle-income countries due to social stigma and cultural normalization. Maternal depression and child maltreatment frequently co-occur and share common risk factors, including domestic violence, inflammatory dysregulation, socioeconomic adversity, and inadequate social support. However, empirical evidence on this association is very limited in Bangladesh. This study aimed to examine the relationship between maternal depressive symptoms and child maltreatment behaviors in middle childho

Barriers and enablers to opioid deprescription: A qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Canada has the fourth highest per capita rate of opioid prescriptions in the world, contributing to the country's opioid crisis. Due to both their pain-relieving and euphoric properties, opioids can be highly addictive, leading to potential overdose and death. Deprescription is an endorsed and organized method of discontinuing a drug but very little is known about the barriers that Canadian physicians face when attempting to deprescribe opioids, particularly those who practice in rural areas (which have some of the highest rates of opioid users). METHODS: This was an explorative,

Development and evaluation of RhizoQOL, a quality-of-life caregiver-reported survey for rhizomelic chondrodysplasia punctata, a rare peroxisomal disorder.

BACKGROUND: Rhizomelic chondrodysplasia punctata (RCDP) is a rare genetic disorder characterized by symptoms such as respiratory dysfunction, seizures, orthopedic issues, and neurodevelopmental delay. Potential therapeutics for RCDP warrant the development of clinical outcome assessments to assess the efficacy of treatment and the well-being of patients. Our study aimed to develop a valid quality-of-life (QOL) caregiver-reported survey instrument, RhizoQOL, to be used as a supportive endpoint in RCDP clinical trials. METHODS: Development of the RhizoQOL survey tool included three RCDP caregiv

Determinants and barriers in early tuberculosis treatment in children at a primary health care facility in Kampala, Uganda; A mixed methods study.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (TB) remains a leading cause of mortality worldwide, with childhood TB posing unique diagnostic challenges due to its pauci bacillary nature. The World Health Organization emphasizes that these diagnostic difficulties hinder early detection, contributing to delays in treatment initiation, disease progression, and increased morbidity and mortality. Addressing these challenges is critical to achieving the global goal of ending TB as a public health threat by 2030. This study aimed to determine the median time to TB treatment initiation and explore the factors influencing

Microglial morphological/inflammatory phenotypes and endocannabinoid signaling in a preclinical model of periodontitis and depression.

BACKGROUND: Depression is a chronic psychiatric disease of multifactorial etiology, and its pathophysiology is not fully understood. Stress and other chronic inflammatory pathologies are shared risk factors for psychiatric diseases, and comorbidities are features of major depression. Epidemiological evidence suggests that periodontitis, as a source of low-grade chronic systemic inflammation, may be associated with depression, but the underlying mechanisms are not well understood. METHODS: Periodontitis (P) was induced in Wistar: Han rats through oral gavage with the pathogenic bacteria Porphy

BACKGROUND: Early detection of cognitive impairment or dementia is essential to reduce the incidence of severe neurodegenerative diseases. However, currently available diagnostic tools for detecting mild cognitive impairment (MCI) or dementia are time-consuming, expensive, or not widely accessible. Hence, exploring more effective methods to assist clinicians in detecting MCI is necessary. OBJECTIVE: In this study, we aimed to explore the feasibility and efficiency of assessing MCI through movement kinetics under tablet-based "drawing and dragging" tasks. METHODS: We iteratively designed "dra

Clinical Effectiveness of N-Methyl-D-Aspartate (NMDA) Receptor Antagonists in Adult Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) Treatment: A Systematic Review.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a neuropsychiatric disorder that affects approximately 2% of the human population. Traditional treatment of OCD includes selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) or serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SRI) treatment along with cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). Nearly 25%-30% of OCD patients do not respond to SSRIs. Glutamatergic agents are currently being studied for the treatment of OCD due to the glutamatergic pathway in the brain, related to OCD, and the role of the cortico-striato-thalamic circuit (CSTC). This review assesses the clinical effectivene

Self-reported tick exposure as an indicator of Lyme disease risk in an endemic region of Quebec, Canada.

BACKGROUND: Lyme disease (LD) and other tick-borne diseases are emerging across Canada. Spatial and temporal LD risk is typically estimated using acarological surveillance and reported human cases, the former not considering human behavior leading to tick exposure and the latter occurring after infection. OBJECTIVES: The primary objective was to explore, at the census subdivision level (CSD), the associations of self-reported tick exposure, alternative risk indicators (predicted tick density, eTick submissions, public health risk level), and ecological variables (Ixodes scapularis habitat sui

Development and Content Validity of the Bilateral Vestibulopathy Questionnaire.

BACKGROUND: To date, the burden and severity of the full spectrum of bilateral vestibulopathy (BVP) symptoms has not yet been measured in a standardized manner. Since therapeutic interventions aiming to improve BVP symptoms are emerging, the need for a new standardized assessment tool that encompasses the specific aspects of BVP arises. Therefore, the aim of this study was to develop a multi-item Patient Reported Outcome Measure (PROM) that captures the clinically important symptoms of BVP and assesses its impact on daily life. METHODS: The development of the Bilateral Vestibulopathy Question
