The clinical value of nomogram combined with machine learning models in predicting the progression of hypertensive disorders in pregnancy to severe preeclampsia.

BACKGROUND: Hypertensive disorders in pregnancy (HDP) include gestational hypertension, preeclampsia, and eclampsia. Not all cases of gestational hypertension or mild preeclampsia progress to severe conditions. However, once they develop into severe preeclampsia (SPE), the risks to both the mother and the fetus increase significantly. We aimed to establish a nomogram and train a machine learning (ML) model that could identify SPE, early in the course of HDP. METHODS: In this retrospective study, 593 patients with HDP were enrolled in the training cohort. For predicting SPE early, six supervis

The Effect of Smartphone-Delivered Approach Bias Modification Training on Relapse Among Patients Leaving Residential Alcohol Treatment: A Randomised Controlled Trial.

PURPOSE: Approach bias modification (ApBM), a cognitive training intervention that reduces "alcohol approach bias" (impulses to approach alcohol-related stimuli), reduces post-treatment relapse rates when delivered during residential alcohol use disorder (AUD) treatment. However, few residential treatment services provide ApBM to their clients. Smartphone app-delivered ApBM may circumvent barriers to implementation within services by allowing clients to self-administer ApBM after discharge instead. This double-blind RCT tested whether providing a personalised ApBM smartphone app to people disc

Healthcare workers' perspectives on HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis delivery in Sub-Saharan Africa: implications for injectable formulation rollout-a narrative review.

BACKGROUND: Long-acting injectable Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), particularly cabotegravir, presents a promising HIV prevention option in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), where HIV prevalence remains high. As frontline providers, healthcare workers (HCWs) are central to PrEP delivery. Given the emerging introduction of injectable PrEP in SSA, this review examines HCW perspectives on PrEP delivery broadly, including both oral and injectable formulations, with particular attention to how oral PrEP implementation experiences inform injectable PrEP readiness. Nursing-Led Models of Tracheostomy Management for Patients With Head and Neck Cancer: A Mixed-Methods Study.

BACKGROUND: The incidence of head and neck cancer (HNC) is rising globally, with patients undergoing extensive surgical resection for advanced disease frequently requiring prophylactic tracheostomy to secure the airway in the early postoperative period. Specialised HNC nurses undertake extended scope tracheostomy procedures, including tube changes and decannulations, yet practice varies widely between institutions and no standardised training framework exists. AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To benchmark the roles and responsibilities of specialised HNC nurses in tracheostomy management across Australia

Developing a predictive model for delayed healing of esophagojejunal anastomotic fistula following total gastrectomy based on imaging and clinical inflammatory-nutritional status.

BACKGROUND: Esophagojejunal anastomotic fistula (EJF) following radical total gastrectomy is a severe perioperative complication in patients with gastric cancer, particularly as delayed fistula healing increases hospitalization costs and leads to poor prognosis. Numerous factors influence the occurrence and progression of EJF, with inflammation and nutritional status being significant contributors to perioperative complications. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the prediction of delayed EJF healing based on postoperative clinical and imaging-related inflammation-nutrition status. MET

Spiritual care competence and associated factors among nurses: a multi-center cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Spiritual care competence among nurses is a crucial aspect of delivering holistic care to patients. Although conducting a study on the Spiritual Care Competence Scale (SCCS) of nurses not only contributes to the improvement of patient care but also provides valuable insights for the continuous development of healthcare professionals and the enhancement of healthcare services, it has been observed to receive comparatively less attention in recognizing its importance. The study aimed to assess the level of nurses' Spiritual Care Competence Scale and associated factors in Northwest Am

Addressing the inequity of access to home Dialysis in Europe: recommendations for action informed by an international consensus exercise.

BACKGROUND: Use of Home Dialysis (referring to both peritoneal and home haemodialysis throughout this study), is under-exploited and highly variable across Europe, and this is the case both within as well as between countries. Several, predominantly modifiable barriers have been described that explain this inequity of access, but as yet no recommendations have been agreed upon as to how to address the problem. METHODS: A multi-disciplinary multi-organisational policy forum representing the key stakeholders was held at the EuroPD meeting in Bruges, November 2023 with the purpose of defining so

Muscle memory of exercise optimizes mitochondrial metabolism to support skeletal muscle growth.

Exercise protects against age-related declines in skeletal muscle mass and function while improving overall health. Exercise can also prime long-term muscle health to enhance adaptations upon exercise retraining, a phenomenon termed muscle memory that remains largely understudied. To assess how prior endurance training elicits a lasting metabolic memory in skeletal muscle, we used C57BL/6 mice fed either a control (CD) or obesogenic diet [high-fat diet (HFD)] that underwent 4-wk training, detraining, and retraining periods. Our results show that exercise retraining attenuated weight gain and p

Screening and validating genes associated with cuproptosis in systemic lupus erythematosus by expression profiling combined with machine learning.

Cell death has long been a focal point in life sciences research, and recently, scientists have discovered a novel form of cell death induced by copper, termed cuproptosis. This paper aimed to identify genes associated with cuproptosis in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) through machine learning, combined with single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq), to screen and validate related genes. The analytical results were then experimentally verified. Two published microarray gene expression datasets (GSE65391 and GSE61635) from SLE and control peripheral blood samples were downloaded from the GEO d
