Ornamental birds: hidden carriers of potentially virulent and antimicrobial-resistant Enterococcus faecalis in Bangladesh.

Enterococcus faecalis, a nosocomial pathogen adept at acquiring virulence and resistance genes, may be silently carried by ornamental birds in proximity to humans, posing a health risk. Two hundred ornamental bird samples (feces = 120, cage feed = 60, and store feed = 20) were collected and processed to detect E. faecalis isolates and determine their biofilm-forming capabilities, virulence, and antimicrobial resistance profiles. In PCR, 44 (22%) samples were found positive for E. faecalis, with the highest occurrence in cage feed samples (18/60), followed by feces (25/120) and stored feed (1/2

Sunlight-Triggered Bacterial Membrane-Targeting Aggregation-Induced Emission "Nanoantibiotic" Hydrogel for Ultrafast Multidrug-Resistant Bacteria Eradication and Diabetic Wound Healing.

Drug-resistant bacterial infections and persistent biofilm formation pose critical bottlenecks for diabetic wound management. To overcome these challenges, a sunlight (SL)-triggered aggregation-induced emission (AIE) photosensitizer, designated as MTP, was engineered and incorporated into an injectable thermosensitive hydrogel. Featuring a donor-acceptor architecture, MTP exhibits NIR fluorescence emission, while its visible light absorption enables sunlight-triggered dual-type photodynamic activity. Crucially, MTP achieves ultrafast bacterial cell membrane anchoring within 15 seconds, deliver

Discovery of MBL-AB01: a novel antibacterial xanthone antibiotic with high activity against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus.

A novel compound denoted MBL-AB01 was isolated from a marine Actinoalloteichus, which belongs to a rare and underexplored class of Actinobacteria. This work demonstrates that the novel compound MBL-AB01 shows very high activity in vitro against six methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus strains, and high activity against a panel of three other Gram-positive strains, including a vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium. Structure elucidation of the compound revealed that MBL-AB01 is a polycyclic xanthone antibiotic closely related to the bioactive compounds: xantholipin and lysolipin. Thi

Susceptibility of Ocular Surface Bacteria to Various Antibiotic Agents in a Romanian Ophthalmology Clinic.

Periodic assessment of bacterial contamination is necessary as it allows proper guidance in cases of eye infections through the use of appropriate antibiotics. Due to the extensive use of antibiotic treatment, many strains of the microbiota that cause infections are resistant to the usual ophthalmic antibiotics. The present study provides an updated assessment of the susceptibility of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria found on the ocular surface to the most commonly used antibiotic agents in patients undergoing cataract surgery. A total of 993 patients were included in the study with ag

Punicalagin, an Inhibitor of Sortase A, Is a Promising Therapeutic Drug to Combat Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus Infections.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) poses a major threat to human health globally. Staphylococcus aureus is recognized as a cause of disease worldwide, especially methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) and vancomycin-resistant S. aureus (VRSA). The enzyme sortase A (SrtA), present on the cell surface of S. aureus, plays a key role in bacterial virulence without affecting the bacterial viability, and SrtA-deficient S. aureus strains do not affect the growth of bacteria. Here, we found that punicalagin, a natural compound, was able to inhibit SrtA activity with a very low half maximal inhibitory conc

Development of Novel Peptides for the Antimicrobial Combination Therapy against Carbapenem-Resistant Acinetobacter baumannii Infection.

Carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii (CRAB) infection has a high mortality rate, making the development of novel effective antibiotic therapeutic strategies highly critical. Antimicrobial peptides can outperform conventional antibiotics regarding drug resistance and broad-spectrum activity. PapMA, an 18-residue hybrid peptide, containing N-terminal residues of papiliocin and magainin 2, has previously demonstrated potent antibacterial activity. In this study, PapMA analogs were designed by substituting Ala15 or Phe18 with Ala, Phe, and Trp. PapMA-3 with Trp18 showed the highest bacteri
