Melanin-Binding-Based Discovery of Topically Instilled Carbonic Anhydrase Inhibitors for Targeted Delivery and Prolonged Action in the Eye.

Glaucoma is a vision-threatening disease that is currently treated with intraocular-pressure-reducing eyedrops that are instilled once or multiple times daily. Unfortunately, the treatment is associated with low patient adherence and suboptimal treatment outcomes. We developed carbonic anhydrase II inhibitors (CAI-II) for a prolonged reduction of intraocular pressure (IOP). The long action is based on the melanin binding of the drugs that prolongs ocular drug retention and response. Overall, 63 new CAI-II compounds were synthesized and tested for melanin binding in vitro. Carbonic anhydrase af

Gene Duplication in a Patient With Usher Syndrome Type 2C: A Case Report.

Variants of the ADGRV1 gene cause Usher syndrome type 2C (USH2C). There are three types of Usher syndrome, all inherited in an autosomal recessive pattern. USH2C classically causes sensorineural hearing loss and progressive retinitis pigmentosa (RP) occurring in adolescence or adulthood. In this study, we report the case of a 34-year-old male with congenital sensorineural and progressive hearing loss and peripheral vision loss with a fundus examination of pale optic nerve with a cup-to-disk ratio of 0.40, arteriolar attenuation, arteriovenous ratio 2/5 with choroid-retinal degeneration, periph

Relationship of skin complexion with gingival tissue color and hyperpigmentation. A multi-ethnic comparative study.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The most frequently seen intra-oral soft tissue is the gingiva. Most often, it is seen as coral-pink tissue that surrounds the neck of the teeth. Gingiva that encircles the tooth necks and covers the alveolar processes of the jaws is an intra-oral tissue that exhibits biomimetic features. The wide range of colors of the gingiva depends on the configuration of gingival vascularity, the degree of epithelial cornification, level of melanogenesis, and the depth of epithelialization. However, the color of the gingiva varies depending on the degree of melanin pigmentation.

Head-mounted adaptive optics visual simulator.

Adaptive optics visual simulation is a powerful tool for vision testing and evaluation. However, the existing instruments either have fixed tabletop configurations or, being wearable, only offer the correction of defocus. This paper proposes a novel head-mounted adaptive optics visual simulator that can measure and modify complex ocular aberrations in real-time. The prototype is composed of two optical modules, one for the objective assessment of aberrations and the second for wavefront modulation, all of which are integrated into a wearable headset. The device incorporates a microdisplay for

Advancements in diagnosing oral potentially malignant disorders: leveraging Vision transformers for multi-class detection.

OBJECTIVES: Diagnosing oral potentially malignant disorders (OPMD) is critical to prevent oral cancer. This study aims to automatically detect and classify the most common pre-malignant oral lesions, such as leukoplakia and oral lichen planus (OLP), and distinguish them from oral squamous cell carcinomas (OSCC) and healthy oral mucosa on clinical photographs using vision transformers. METHODS: 4,161 photographs of healthy mucosa, leukoplakia, OLP, and OSCC were included. Findings were annotated pixel-wise and reviewed by three clinicians. The photographs were divided into 3,337 for training a

Trends in Ophthalmological Patents, 2005-2020.

Purpose: Technological development drives the optimization of therapeutics in ophthalmology, but quantifiable and systematic review of such innovation is lacking. To fill this gap, we characterize trends in ophthalmology-related patents in the United States from 2005 to 2020. Methods: Publicly available patent data from the US Patent and Trademark Office was analyzed with the R programming language. Ophthalmology-related patents were identified with a keyword search of their titles and claims text. Temporal trends were assessed with the Mann-Kendall trend test (α = 0.05, two-sided). Results: O

Phosphorylcholine and KR12-Containing Corneal Implants in HSV-1-Infected Rabbit Corneas.

Severe HSV-1 infection can cause blindness due to tissue damage from severe inflammation. Due to the high risk of graft failure in HSV-1-infected individuals, cornea transplantation to restore vision is often contraindicated. We tested the capacity for cell-free biosynthetic implants made from recombinant human collagen type III and 2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine (RHCIII-MPC) to suppress inflammation and promote tissue regeneration in the damaged corneas. To block viral reactivation, we incorporated silica dioxide nanoparticles releasing KR12, the small bioactive core fragment of LL3

Refractive extended depth-of-focus lens design based on periodic power profile for presbyopia correction.

PURPOSE: Limitations of existing diffractive multifocal designs for presbyopia correction include discrete foci and photic phenomena such as halos and glare. This study aimed to explore a methodology for developing refractive extended depth-of-focus (EDoF) lenses based on a periodic power profile. METHODS: The proposed design technique employed an optical power profile that periodically alternated between far, intermediate and near distances across the pupil radius. To evaluate the lens designs, optical bench testing was conducted. The impact on visual performance was assessed using a spatial

Evaluating the effect of non-invasive force feedback on prosthetic grasp force modulation in participants with and without limb loss.

Grasping an object is one of the most common and complex actions performed by humans. The human brain can adapt and update the grasp dynamics through information received from sensory feedback. Prosthetic hands can assist with the mechanical performance of grasping, however currently commercially available prostheses do not address the disruption of the sensory feedback loop. Providing feedback about a prosthetic hand's grasp force magnitude is a top priority for those with limb loss. This study tested a wearable haptic system, i.e., the Clenching Upper-Limb Force Feedback device (CUFF), which

Anonymizing Radiographs Using an Object Detection Deep Learning Algorithm.

Radiographic markers contain protected health information that must be removed before public release. This work presents a deep learning algorithm that localizes radiographic markers and selectively removes them to enable de-identified data sharing. The authors annotated 2000 hip and pelvic radiographs to train an object detection computer vision model. Data were split into training, validation, and test sets at the patient level. Extracted markers were then characterized using an image processing algorithm, and potentially useful markers (eg, "L" and "R") without identifying information were

Spectacles with highly aspherical lenslets for myopia control do not change visual sensitivity in automated static perimetry.

PURPOSE: Spectacle lenses with arrays of lenslets have gained popularity in myopia control due to their high efficacy, low impact on visual performance, and non-invasiveness. One of the questions regarding their impact on visual performance that still remain is that: do the lenslets impact visual field sensitivity? The current study aims to investigate the impact of wearing spectacle lenses with highly aspherical lenslets (HAL) on the visual field sensitivity. METHODS: An automated static perimetry test (Goldman perimeter target III) was employed to measure the detection sensitivity in the vi

Disrupted interhemispheric functional connectivity in primary angle-closure glaucoma: a functional MRI study: voxel-mirrored homotopic connectivity in primary angle-closure glaucoma patients.

The purpose of the study is to use the voxel-mirrored homotopic connectivity (VMHC) technique to explore the pattern of the interhemispheric functional connectivity in patients with primary angle-closure glaucoma (PACG). The interhemispheric functional connectivity was compared between 31 individuals with PACG and 31 healthy controls closely matched with sex, age, and educational level using the VMHC technique. Significant differences in VMHC between two groups were selected to be classification features for classifying individuals with PACG from healthy controls using the support vector machi

Vision-Based Structural Modal Identification Using Hybrid Motion Magnification.

As a promising alternative to conventional contact sensors, vision-based technologies for a structural dynamic response measurement and health monitoring have attracted much attention from the research community. Among these technologies, Eulerian video magnification has a unique capability of analyzing modal responses and visualizing modal shapes. To reduce the noise interference and improve the quality and stability of the modal shape visualization, this study proposes a hybrid motion magnification framework that combines linear and phase-based motion processing. Based on the assumption that

An injectable thermosensitive hydrogel for dual delivery of diclofenac and Avastin® to effectively suppress inflammatory corneal neovascularization.

Corneal neovascularization (CNV) is a sequela of anterior segment inflammation, which could lead to vision impairment and even blindness. In the present study, the dual delivery of anti-inflammatory agent (i.e., diclofenac; DIC) and anti-VEGF antibody (i.e., Avastin®; Ava) by the thermosensitive hydrogel (Poly(dl-lactide)-poly(ethylene glycol)-poly(dl-lactide); PDLLA-PEG-PDLLA) is expected to effectively inhibit CNV via their synergistic effects. The optimal DIC micelles were formulated and then mixed with Ava and PDLLA-PEG-PDLLA aqueous solution to generate various DIC@Ava-loaded hydrogels. T

Seeing motion of controlled object improves grip timing in adults with autism spectrum condition: evidence for use of inverse dynamics in motor control.

Previous studies (Haswell et al. in Nat Neurosci 12:970-972, 2009; Marko et al. in Brain J Neurol 138:784-797, 2015) reported that people with autism rely less on vision for learning to reach in a force field. This suggested a possibility that they have difficulties in extracting force information from visual motion signals, a process called inverse dynamics computation. Our recent study (Takamuku et al. in J Int Soc Autism Res 11:1062-1075, 2018) examined the ability of inverse computation with two perceptual tasks and found similar performances in typical and autistic adults. However, this t
