Quantification of Gaze-Dependent Corrective Errors With Fresnel Prisms: Implications for Strabismus Management.

PURPOSE: Fresnel prisms are widely used to manage strabismus. Although prism power is typically selected based on the deviation in the primary gaze position, actual deflection varies with the gaze direction because the angle of incidence changes. This study quantified gaze-dependent corrective errors in the secondary and tertiary positions. METHODS: Fresnel prisms (10Δ-40Δ) were mounted on a two-axis rotation stage. Deflection was measured by projecting a laser spot onto a tangent screen 100 cm away while rotating the prisms horizontally and/or vertically (±30°). Two configurations were teste

Visual acuity in controls and patients measured with Maxwellian view and a 3 mm pupil: Examining potential effects of inherent and induced aberrations.

We sought to improve the measurement of visual acuity (VA) by reducing the effect of unwanted optical artifacts in patients with retinal disease. We evaluated the effects of age and of inherent and induced aberrations on VA for controls and patients with changes to the posterior segment, anterior segment, or both. We tested VA in 30 controls and 17 patients, using Maxwellian view and a 3 mm pupil. This method reduces wavefront aberrations and allows high spatial frequency information to be transmitted at a constant retinal illuminance. We reduced glare, crowding, and fixation errors by project

Intraoperative Ocular Blood Flow Dynamics in Response to Intraocular Pressure Fluctuations During Vitrectomy for Proliferative Diabetic Retinopathy.

Background/Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the autoregulatory capacity of optic nerve head (ONH) tissue blood flow in response to intraocular pressure (IOP) fluctuations during vitrectomy in patients with proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR). We hypothesized that impaired autoregulation of ONH tissue blood flow in response to intraoperative IOP fluctuations could contribute to subsequent ONH atrophy and the development of visual field defects in PDR patients following vitrectomy. Methods: We included five eyes from five patients with PDR (mean age 70.6 ± 9.0 years) undergoing 25-g

MOdulation-Guided ENcoding (MOGEN) Scheme for Vessel-Encoded Arterial Spin Labeling.

PURPOSE: Vessel-encoded arterial spin labeling (VEASL) enables simultaneous, non-contrast imaging of multiple vascular territories that is useful for differential diagnosis and treatment monitoring of cerebrovascular diseases. However, the existing encoding methods are signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) inefficient. METHODS: We developed a MOdulation-Guided ENcoding (MOGEN) scheme that directly exploits the inversion spatial modulation profile to obtain SNR-efficient encoding matrix. Simulations, phantom tests, and healthy volunteer scans were performed to demonstrate its feasibility in multiple app

An in-depth characterization of development-related electroretinographical and morphological changes in Landrace pigs.

PURPOSE: Landrace pigs are increasingly used as a large-animal model in ophthalmic research due to their cone-enriched visual streak and anatomical similarity to the human eye. However, they are commonly studied at 16-20 weeks of age, a timeframe in which the animals double their weight and development-related physiological changes may occur. This study aims to characterize retinal function and morphology and establish reference values for future translational studies. METHODS: Landrace pigs (16-20 weeks old) underwent standardized examinations of the left eye at baseline (16 weeks), 18 and 2

Multi-target microfluidic loop-mediated isothermal amplification technology for the detection of foodborne pathogens in various food matrices.

BACKGROUND: Nutritional foods are susceptible to foodborne pathogens. Loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) technology has great potential in detecting foodborne pathogens, but conventional LAMP suffers from drawbacks such as complex operation and low detection throughput. Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop a multi-targeted and simultaneous LAMP detection platform to identify pathogens across various food matrices, in order to effectively manage food quality and safeguard human health. RESULTS: The integration of LAMP with a microfluidic chip is proposed to enable the simul

Prevalence of the anti-CASPR2 autoantibody in patients with somatic symptom disorder accompanied by medically unexplained pain.

BACKGROUND: Medically unexplained symptoms (MUS) with pain are classified as somatic symptom disorder (SSD) with pain in the field of psychiatry, although an undetected biological basis may underlie at least some of these cases. One such candidate etiology is autoantibodies. Autoantibody etiologies are suspected in MUS with pain, including fibromyalgia, which is highly related to SSD accompanied with pain. Furthermore, autoantibodies against contactin-associated protein-like 2 (CASPR2) are known to induce neuropathy and pain, yet no study has examined the prevalence or clinical significance of

Accuracy of deep learning models in the detection of accessory ostium in coronal cone beam computed tomographic images.

Accessory ostium [AO] is one of the important anatomical variations in the maxillary sinus. AO is often associated with sinus pathology. Radiographic imaging plays a very important role in the detection of AO. Deep learning models have been used in maxillofacial imaging for interpretation and segmentation. However, there have been no research papers investigating the effectiveness of CNN in detecting AO in radiographs. To fill this gap of knowledge, we conducted a study to determine the accuracy of deep learning models in detecting AO in coronal CBCT images. Two examiners collected 454 coronal

Enhancing geotechnical damage detection with deep learning: a convolutional neural network approach.

Most natural disasters result from geodynamic events such as landslides and slope collapse. These failures cause catastrophes that directly impact the environment and cause financial and human losses. Visual inspection is the primary method for detecting failures in geotechnical structures, but on-site visits can be risky due to unstable soil. In addition, the body design and hostile and remote installation conditions make monitoring these structures inviable. When a fast and secure evaluation is required, analysis by computational methods becomes feasible. In this study, a convolutional neura

β-Bursts over Frontal Cortex Track the Surprise of Unexpected Events in Auditory, Visual, and Tactile Modalities.

One of the fundamental ways in which the brain regulates and monitors behavior is by making predictions about the sensory environment and adjusting behavior when those expectations are violated. As such, surprise is one of the fundamental computations performed by the human brain. In recent years, it has been well established that one key aspect by which behavior is adjusted during surprise is inhibitory control of the motor system. Moreover, because surprise automatically triggers inhibitory control without much proactive influence, it can provide unique insights into largely reactive control
