This case report describes the diagnostic trial of an inspiratory wheeze in a 1.5-year-old Swiss Alpine goat. Left grade 4 laryngeal hemiplegia was diagnosed via laryngoscopy, whereas the severity of the hemiplegia was assessed according to the grading system used in horses. BACKGROUND: With the use of routine calcium evaluation, the incidence of primary hyperparathyroidism (pHPT) has considerably increased. The aim of our study was the assessment of the morbidity and the outcome of surgically treated patients with pHPT.
METHODS: The charts of 279 patients (204 female, 75 male, median age: 58 years) who underwent surgery for pHPT between 1989 and 1999 were retrospectively reviewed. A follow-up was carried out on 235 patients after a mean period of 3.6 years (0.2-10 years).
RESULTS: In 148 patients a unilateral, and in 130 patients a bilateral approach was taken.

We experienced a case of 7-year-old boy who developed bilateral recurrent laryngeal nerve paralysis following an elective neurosurgical operation under oxygen-nitrous oxide-isoflurane anesthesia. He underwent a removal of brain tumor in the supratentorial region on supine position. Tuberculosis affecting the thyroid gland is a rare condition. We present the case of a 30-year-old man with thyroid tuberculosis whose presenting complaints were dyspnoea and hoarseness. There was a cystic mass in the posterosuperior right thyroid lobe extending into the paraglottic space. There was also recurrent laryngeal nerve involvement. We performed surgery and administered post-operative antituberculous treatment.

OBJECTIVE: Early glottic carcinoma can be effectively treated with radiation or endoscopic laser surgery. We evaluated our experience treating early glottic cancer with laser CO2 surgery.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: 64 patients with Tis, T1 and T2 carcinoma, who underwent endoscopic CO2 laser excision between January 1999 and July 2002, were retrospectively analyzed. We report the case of a 75-year-old man with a 6-month history of hoarseness due to a left recurrent laryngeal nerve palsy. Investigations revealed a thoracic aortic aneurysm compressing the left recurrent nerve; thus, the diagnosis of Ortner's syndrome, ie, cardiovocal syndrome, could be established.
