An original method of simulating the articular cartilage in the context of in vitro biomechanical studies investigating the proximal femur.

Biomechanical testing is a necessity given the development of novel implants used in the osteosynthesis of hip fractures. The purpose of biomechanical testing is to recreate realistic conditions similar to the in vivo conditions. Although biomechanical testing of hip arthroplasty has been standardized since the 1970s, there is no consensus at present on testing methodology for osteosynthesis of hip fractures. Most biomechanical studies examining the fractures of the proximal femur in order to optimize implants opt for loading the bone-implant ensemble directly on the femoral head or using a me

Clinimetric evaluation of five clinically feasible measures of the leg extensor muscle strength in neurological rehabilitation settings.

A gold-standard clinical measure of leg muscle strength has not been established. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate clinimetric properties of five clinically feasible measures of lower-limb extensor muscle strength in neurological rehabilitation settings. This was a cross-sectional observational study of 36 participants with leg weakness as a result of a neurological condition/injury. Participants were recruited across a range of walking abilities, from non- to independently ambulant. Each was assessed using each of the following five measures: manual muscle test (MMT), hand-hel

Leptospirosis Cases among Outpatients with Non-Malaria Fever Attending Primary Care Clinics during the Rainy Season in Bobo Dioulasso, Burkina Faso.

Leptospirosis is presumably an important cause of non-malarial fever in West Africa. In this study, outpatients consulting in primary care clinics during the rainy season were tested for leptospirosis, and clinical characteristics associated with leptospirosis cases were explored. Patients with fever ≥ 39°C were recruited in nine primary health care centers in Bobo Dioulasso (Burkina Faso). Diagnosis of malaria was ruled out using a rapid diagnostic test (RDT; SD Bioline Malaria®). Leptospirosis cases were defined as patients who tested positive for Leptospira IgM (Leptocheck-WB RDT and Leptos

In-Hospital Rehabilitation for Frailty Management May Improve Quality of Life in Patients Receiving Maintenance Dialysis: A Retrospective Observational Study.

Background Quality of life (QOL) is defined as an individual's perception of his or her position in life in the context of culture and value systems. Previous studies have shown that hemodialysis markedly affects patients' QOL, and health-related QOL has been increasingly recognized as an important medical outcome in patients undergoing maintenance hemodialysis (MHD). Methods A two-week hospitalization program for patients undergoing MHD was introduced in 2023 to evaluate frailty, along with comprehensive geriatric assessment (CGA) and evaluation of motor and oral cavity functions. During this

Fascial Manipulation Compared to Stretching for Rehabilitation of Children With Cerebral Palsy: Protocol for a Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Maintaining and improving motor function is essential in the rehabilitation of children with cerebral palsy (CP). Stretching is traditionally used to prevent muscle tightness and contractures to improve movement patterns in children with CP. Fascial manipulation (FM) is an increasingly used manual therapy method for movement difficulties associated with CP. However, evidence for FM remains limited, and its benefits over conventional stretching are unclear. A pilot randomized controlled trial (RCT) is warranted to assess the feasibility and acceptability of a definitive trial compar

Sex differences in the thermoregulatory and cardiovascular response to exercise in hot environmental conditions.

Exercise during heat exposure induces skin microvascular and systemic cardiovascular changes. When standardized exercise tasks are completed, such as during military training or in workplace settings, sex differences in responses may be apparent. Nineteen males and 19 females participated in a set-pace laboratory walking test (treadmill walking 5 km/h; 2% incline) in a climate chamber (40°C; 50% RH) for 90 min. Body composition (DXA) and aerobic capacity (V̇o2max) were measured in a preliminary session. Metabolic heat production, skin blood flow (SkBF; laser Doppler flowmetry), limb blood flow

Objective dairy cow mobility analysis and scoring system using computer vision-based keypoint detection technique from top-view 2-dimensional videos.

The objective of this study was to assess the applicability of a computer vision-based keypoint detection technique to extract mobility variables associated with mobility scores from top-view 2-dimensional (2D) videos of dairy cows. In addition, the study determined the potential of a machine learning classification model to predict mobility scores based on the newly extracted mobility variables. A dataset of 256 video clips of individual cows was collected, with each clip recorded from a top-view perspective while the cows were walking. The cows were visually assessed using a 4-level mobility

Observation Versus Cast Treatment of Toddler's Fractures.

BACKGROUND: Nondisplaced metaphyseal fractures of the distal tibia, or toddler's fractures, are one of the most common pediatric injuries. Healing typically occurs quickly without sequelae. Treatment ranges from long leg cast immobilization to observation. This study compares short-term clinical and radiographic outcomes of toddler's fractures treated with long leg casting versus observation. METHODS: Patients with toddler's fractures were offered enrollment and randomization at diagnosis. Because many families opposed randomization, a preference arm was added after one year. All subjects wer

Dynamic balance assessment during gait in children with Down and Prader-Willi syndromes using inertial sensors.

Down (DS) and Prader-Willi (PWS) syndromes are chromosomal disorders both characterized by obesity, ligament laxity, and hypotonia, the latter associated with gait instability. Although these shared features may justify a common rehabilitation approach, evidence exists that adults with DS and PWS adopt different postural and walking strategies. The development of an instrumented protocol able to describe these strategies and quantify patients' gait stability in the current clinical routine would be of great benefit for health professionals, allowing them to design personalized rehabilitation p

Genotype-phenotype correlations in early onset ataxia with ocular motor apraxia and hypoalbuminaemia.

Early onset ataxia with ocular motor apraxia and hypoalbuminaemia/ataxia-oculomotor apraxia 1 is a recessively inherited ataxia caused by mutations in the aprataxin gene. We previously reported that patients with frameshift mutations exhibit a more severe phenotype than those with missense mutations. However, reports on genotype-phenotype correlation in early onset ataxia with ocular motor apraxia and hypoalbuminaemia are controversial. To clarify this issue, we studied 58 patients from 39 Japanese families, including 40 patients homozygous for c.689_690insT and nine patients homozygous or com

[The effect of an endothelin receptor antagonist in Eisenmenger syndrome: a single-center experience of 11 patients].

The Eisenmenger syndrome is a complication of congenital heart disease with significant left-to-right shunts, such as large ventricular septal defects, and corresponds to fixed pulmonary hypertension with shunt reversal. Bosentan, an inhibitor of endothelin A and B receptors, is a new molecule previously validated in the treatment of primary pulmonary hypertension. The authors report their monocentric experience of bosentan in 11 consecutive patients with the Eisenmenger syndrome treated for at least one year. This retrospective study comprised 7 females and 4 males with an average age of 34 y
