Protective role of the dried white mulberry extract on the reproductive damage and fertility in rats treated with carmustine.

The present study investigated the protective effect of dried white Mulberry extract (DWME) against carmustine (Crm) induced biochemical alterations and spermatological, histopathological, and fertility damage in Wistar albino rats. Male rats were divided into four groups (control, Crm, Crm + DWME, and DWME group). It was found that Crm decreased the motility. Crm decreased the concentration (not different from control group) compared to DWME groups. Total blood MDA levels were reduced during the recovery period. Also, the recovery period reduced the MDA levels in the Crm group/testicular tiss

Microbial degradation and transformation of benzo[a]pyrene by using a white-rot fungus Pleurotus eryngii F032.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are environmentally recalcitrant contaminants formed from naturally or incomplete combustion of organic materials and some of them are difficult to degrade due to their hydrophobicity and persistency. Benzo [a]pyrene (BaP), is one of PAHs that having five fused benzene and reported as mutagenic, carcinogenic and teratogenic compounds. Biodegradation is one of promising techniques due to its relatively low economic cost and microorganism is a natural capacity to consume hydrocarbons. In this investigation, Pleurotus eryngii F032 was grown in 20 mL of modi

Role of Cellular Receptors in the Innate Immune System of Crustaceans in Response to White Spot Syndrome Virus.

Innate immunity is the only defense system for resistance against infections in crustaceans. In crustaceans, white spot diseases caused by white spot syndrome virus (WSSV) are a serious viral disease with high accumulative mortality after infection. Attachment and entry into cells have been known to be two initial and important steps in viral infection. However, systematic information about the mechanisms related to WSSV infection in crustaceans is still limited. Previous studies have reported that cellular receptors are important in the innate immune system and are responsible for the recogni

Facile Synthesis of the Dicyanophosphide Anion via Electrochemical Activation of White Phosphorus: An Avenue to Organophosphorus Compounds.

Organophosphorus compounds (OPCs) have gained tremendous interest in the past decades due to their wide applications ranging from synthetic chemistry to materials and biological sciences. We describe herein a practical and versatile approach for the transformation of white phosphorus (P4) into useful OPCs with high P atom economy via a key bridging anion [P(CN)2]-. This anion can be prepared on a gram scale directly from P4 through an electrochemical process. A variety of OPCs involving phosphinidenes, cyclophosphanes, and phospholides have been made readily accessible from P4 in a two-step ma

Leveraging manifold learning techniques to explore white matter anomalies: An application of the TractLearn pipeline in epilepsy.

An accurate description of brain white matter anatomy in vivo remains a challenge. However, technical progress allows us to analyze structural variations in an increasingly sophisticated way. Current methods of processing diffusion MRI data now make it possible to correct some limiting biases. In addition, the development of statistical learning algorithms offers the opportunity to analyze the data from a new perspective. We applied newly developed tractography models to extract quantitative white matter parameters in a group of patients with chronic temporal lobe epilepsy. Furthermore, we imp

Neuropsychiatric systemic lupus erythematosus is associated with a distinct type and shape of cerebral white matter hyperintensities.

OBJECTIVES: Advanced white matter hyperintensity (WMH) markers on brain MRI may help reveal underlying mechanisms and aid in the diagnosis of different phenotypes of SLE patients experiencing neuropsychiatric (NP) manifestations. METHODS: In this prospective cohort study, we included a clinically well-defined cohort of 155 patients consisting of 38 patients with NPSLE (26 inflammatory and 12 ischaemic phenotype) and 117 non-NPSLE patients. Differences in 3 T MRI WMH markers (volume, type and shape) were compared between patients with NPSLE and non-NPSLE and between patients with inflammatory

Multiomics Investigation of Hypertension and White Matter Hyperintensity as a Source of Vascular Dementia or a Comorbidity to Alzheimer's Disease.

BACKGROUND: Age-related comorbidity is common and significantly increases the burden for the healthcare of the elderly. Alzheimer's disease (AD) and hypertension are the two most prevalent age-related conditions and are highly comorbid. While hypertension is a risk factor for vascular dementia (VD), hypertension with AD (ADHyp+) is often characterized as probable vascular dementia. In the absence of imaging and other diagnostic tests, differentiating the two pathological states is difficult. OBJECTIVE: Our goals are to (1) identify differences in CSF-based vascular dementia profiles, if any,

Genetic basis and identification of candidate genes for wooden breast and white striping in commercial broiler chickens.

Wooden breast (WB) and white striping (WS) are highly prevalent and economically damaging muscle disorders of modern commercial broiler chickens characterized respectively by palpable firmness and fatty white striations running parallel to the muscle fiber. High feed efficiency and rapid growth, especially of the breast muscle, are believed to contribute to development of such muscle defects; however, their etiology remains poorly understood. To gain insight into the genetic basis of these myopathies, a genome-wide association study was conducted using a commercial crossbred broiler population

Can it make me white again? A case report of 88% phenol as a depigmenting agent in vitiligo.

Vitiligo is the most common depigmenting disorder. However, therapies prove to be time-consuming, costly, or slow to show efficacy. Here, we present a case of a 74-year-old female with vitiligo who underwent full-body depigmentation treatment 50 years ago. Brown patches of repigmentation appeared on the patient's face and arms and were eventually treated with 88% phenol. Patient was later switched to compounded 3% glutathione cream for a more sustained effect. Phenol was an accessible, economical, and easily administrable therapeutic option that can result in short-term depigmentation.

The Effect of Accessory Pathway Location on Cardiac Function in Adult Patients with Wolff-Parkinson-White Syndrome.

INTRODUCTION: The relationship between ventricular pre-excitation and left ventricular dysfunction has been described in the absence of sustained supraventricular tachycardia in a series of case reports. However, there have been no systematic studies about the effect of ventricular pre-excitation on cardiac function in adult patients with different accessory pathway locations. METHODS AND RESULTS: Patients were divided into four groups based on the type and location of their accessory pathway: septal, right free wall, left free wall, and concealed. N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide (N

Rates of inflammatory bowel disease in Hispanics comparable to non-Hispanic Whites: results of a cohort study.

PURPOSE: Previous studies have suggested that inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) occurs at higher rates among non-Hispanic Whites (NHWs) compared to other ethnicities; however, Hispanics as the largest minority in the United States remain underrepresented in IBD research and we hypothesize that they have similar rates of IBD. We examined the epidemiology, demographics, clinical presentation, and treatment of IBD in a predominantly Hispanic cohort in Los Angeles (LA) County. METHODS: This was a retrospective cohort study based at Olive View-UCLA Medical Center, one of the three major safety-net

Influence of different types of LEDs lights on the formation of volatile sulfur compounds in white and rosé wines.

The effect of LEDs light on the formation of volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs) and the final sensory quality of white and rosé wines was evaluated. Thus, different commercial wines were exposed for ten days to three types of lights. All wine samples were analyzed throughout the exposure period to determine the usual oenological parameters together with some other chemical characteristics (color evolution; riboflavin, cysteine and methionine photodegradation), VSC amounts and sensory characteristics. The results showed that the wines exposed to ultraviolet light suffered greater degradation of t

White and Gray Matter Abnormalities in Australian Footballers With a History of Sports-Related Concussion: An MRI Study.

Sports-related concussion (SRC) is a form of mild traumatic brain injury that has been linked to long-term neurological abnormalities. Australian rules football is a collision sport with wide national participation and is growing in popularity worldwide. However, the chronic neurological consequences of SRC in Australian footballers remain poorly understood. This study investigated the presence of brain abnormalities in Australian footballers with a history of sports-related concussion (HoC) using multimodal MRI. Male Australian footballers with HoC (n = 26), as well as noncollision sport athl

Hydrogen sulfide and calcium effects on cadmium removal and resistance in the white-rot fungus Phanerochaete chrysosporium.

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S), an emerging gas transmitter, has been shown to be involved in multiple intracellular physiological and biochemical processes. In this study, the effects of hydrogen sulfide coupled with calcium on cadmium removal and resistance in Phanerochaete chrysosporium were examined. The results revealed that H2S enhanced the uptake of calcium by P. chrysosporium to resist cadmium stress. The removal and accumulation of cadmium by the mycelium was reduced by H2S and Ca2+ pretreatment. Moreover, oxidative damage and membrane integrity were alleviated by H2S and Ca2+. Corresponding

The Effects of Tau, Amyloid, and White Matter Lesions on Mobility, Dual Tasking, and Balance in Older People.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to investigate whether white matter lesions (WML), β-amyloid-, and tau pathologies are independently associated with mobility, dual tasking, and dynamic balance performance in older nondemented individuals. METHODS: We included 299 older people (mean, SD, age: 71.8, 5.6 years) from the Swedish BioFINDER study, whereof 175 were cognitively unimpaired and 124 had mild cognitive impairment (MCI). In multivariable regression analyses, dependent variables included mobility (Timed Up & Go [TUG]), dual tasking (TUG with a simultaneous subtraction task, that is, TUG-Cog,

Case Report: Coexistent Wolff-Parkinson-White Syndrome and Brugada Phenocopy in a Patient With Pneumonia and Myocarditis.

Background: In recent years, Wolff-Parkinson-White (WPW) syndrome and Brugada electrocardiogram (ECG) patterns have been reported as coexistent in the same patient. In most cases, the two waveforms appeared separately. Here, we described combinations of different waveforms on one ECG, such as the Brugada pattern with delta waves and the Brugada pattern with paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia (PSVT). Importantly, we recorded an alternate conversion of these combined ECG waveforms, which has not previously been reported in the literature. At the same time, we confirmed that the change in th

Further delineation of the clinical spectrum of White-Sutton syndrome: 12 new individuals and a review of the literature.

White-Sutton syndrome (WHSUS) is a neurodevelopmental disorder caused by heterozygous loss-of-function variants in POGZ. Through the Deciphering Developmental Disorders study and clinical testing, we identified 12 individuals from 10 families with pathogenic or likely pathogenic variants in POGZ (eight de novo and two inherited). Most individuals had delayed development and/or intellectual disability. We analyzed the clinical findings in our series and combined it with data from 89 previously reported individuals. The results demonstrate WHSUS is associated with variable developmental delay or
