Antimicrobial Resistance and Biofilm Formation in Bacterial Species Isolated from a Veterinary Hospital.

Micro-organisms are abundant in nature and can also be found in hospital settings, causing high rates of infections. This study aimed to identify bacteria isolated from a veterinary hospital, as well as to perform antimicrobial susceptibility testing using the disk diffusion method (Kirby-Bauer), biofilm production tests using 96-well polystyrene microtiter plates and crystal violet dye, and genetic analysis of the ica operon of Staphylococcus isolates. Three collections were made from eleven surfaces and objects in the hospital's non-critical areas (general areas) and critical areas (surgical

Metagenomic evaluation, antimicrobial activities, and immune stimulation of probiotics from dietary supplements and dairy products.

Probiotics are widely marketed as dietary supplements and dairy products for their purported antimicrobial and immunomodulatory activities, often with limited supporting evidence. We identified and isolated probiotics from commercial dietary supplements and dairy products using metagenomics and cultured-based methods. We assessed their anti-bacterial activity against diverse pathogens and investigated their immunomodulatory effects on phagocytes and natural killer (NK) cells. Metagenomic analysis revealed that Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium were the predominant genera in dietary supplements

A five-year retrospective study focused on urinary tract infections in kidney transplant recipients in the current era of immunosuppression.

After kidney transplantation, UTI are the most common infection concern and can cause acute renal injury (AKI) in allografts. However, long-term allograft function, loss, and mortality risk are inconsistent. A retrospective cohort research of 1,341 kidney transplant recipients (KTR) from January 2014 to March 2019 assessed UTI incidence, risk factors, and consequences on AKI and allograft function in the first year. All first-year post-transplant UTI patients were recorded. Third-generation cephalosporin (1 gr, two doses) and 500 mg intravesical amikacin were given to all patients 1 day before

Association between the antibiotics use and recurrence in patients with resected colorectal cancer: EVADER-1, a nation-wide pharmaco-epidemiologic study.

BACKGROUND: The impact of antibiotics (ATBs) on the risk of colorectal cancer (CRC) recurrence after curative resection remains unknown. METHODS: Using the French nation-wide database of cancer patients, all newly diagnosed non-metastatic CRC patients resected between 01/2012 and 12/2014 were included. The perioperative ATB intake (from 6 months before surgery until 1 year after) was classified according to the class, the period of use (pre- vs post-resection), the disease stage (localized and locally advanced), and the primary tumor location (colon and rectum/junction). The primary endpoint

Comparison of Mutant Prevention Concentrations of Fluoroquinolones Against ESBL-Positive and ESBL-Negative Klebsiella pneumoniae Isolates from Orthopedic Patients.

The majority of Klebsiella pneumonia isolates possess the extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL) enzymes. Therefore, K. pneumoniae can easily develop drug resistance. How to effectively overcome the problem of drug resistance in K. pneumoniae is still a research hotspot. This study aimed to compare the mutant prevention concentration (MPC) of ESBL-positive and ESBL-negative K. pneumoniae isolated from orthopedic patients, which may provide a basis for the effective use of drugs to control the enrichment of resistance mutants of K. pneumoniae. The MPC90 values of 55 isolates of ESBL-positive K

Antibiotic resistance and its correlation with biofilm formation and virulence genes in Klebsiella pneumoniae isolated from wounds.

Klebsiella pneumoniae is the most important species of the Klebsiella genus and often causes hospital infections. These bacteria have a high resistance to most of the available drugs, which has caused concern all over the world. In this study, we investigated the antibiotic resistance profile and the ability to produce extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL) among K. pneumoniae isolates, and then we investigated the relationship between these two factors with biofilm formation and the prevalence of different virulence genes. In this study, 130 isolates of K. pneumoniae isolated from wounds wer

Policy brief: Optimising antimicrobial usage in paediatric inpatient hospital settings.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) poses a global threat, partly fueled by antimicrobial overuse. Paediatric inpatients are particularly vulnerable to infections, leading to high antimicrobial consumption. In low-to-middle income countries (LMICs) like South Africa, research on antimicrobial usage for neonatal and paediatric healthcare-associated infections (HAI) is limited. This cross-sectional study evaluated antimicrobial usage in three academic public sector hospitals in South Africa to improve appropriateness. 22.9% of hospitalised children received at least one prescribed antimicrobial, with

Multidrug resistance in pathogenic Escherichia coli isolates from urinary tract infections in dogs, Spain.

Escherichia coli (E. coli) is a pathogen frequently isolated in cases of urinary tract infections (UTIs) in both humans and dogs and evidence exists that dogs are reservoirs for human infections. In addition, E. coli is associated to increasing antimicrobial resistance rates. This study focuses on the analysis of antimicrobial resistance and the presence of selected virulence genes in E. coli isolates from a Spanish dog population suffering from UTI. This collection of isolates showed an extremely high level of phenotypic resistance to 1st-3rd generation cephalosporins, followed by penicillins

A Spanish Survey on the Perioperative Use of Antimicrobials in Small Animals.

Appropriate use of perioperative antimicrobials can significantly reduce the risk of post-operative infections. However, inappropriate antimicrobial use can result in the creation of multidrug-resistant bacteria, increased costs, host flora disruption, side effects and increased risk of hospital-acquired infections. This survey evaluated the current perioperative use of antimicrobials in small animals by Spanish veterinarians using a web-based questionnaire. Responses were represented using descriptive statistics and a statistical analysis of the association between demographic data and periop
