Interfacial oxygen atom modification of a PdSn alloy to boost oxygen reduction in zinc-air batteries.

Modifying the surface of a catalyst with heteroatoms can regulate the interfacial atomic valence state and adjust the charge distribution, which is promising for obtaining desirable platinum carbon catalyst (Pt/C)-matched oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalytic performance. Here, we developed an efficient method to access O-rich crystalline interfacial-exposed palladium-tin alloy (111) crystal surfaces [Pd3Sn (111)] for highly efficient ORR via direct reduction of Pd/Sn metal salt species that are well dispersed in a nitrogen, phosphorus-doped carbonaceous (NPC) substrate. In addition to the

Acrylamide, an air pollutant, enhances allergen-induced eosinophilic lung inflammation via group 2 innate lymphoid cells.

Air pollution significantly impacts the aggravation of asthma. Exposure to acrylamide, a volatile organic compound in tobacco smoke, is associated with elevated risks of allergy-related outcomes among active smokers. As group 2 innate lymphoid cells (ILC2s) can act as an environmental sensor and significantly contribute to protease allergen-induced lung inflammation, we aimed to elucidate the causal relationship and how inhaled acrylamide worsens allergic lung inflammation via ILC2s. Intranasal acrylamide exposure at nanomolar levels significantly enhanced allergen-induced or recombinant mouse

Critical review on emerging health effects associated with the indoor air quality and its sustainable management.

Indoor air quality (IAQ) is one of the fundamental elements affecting people's health and well-being. Currently, there is a lack of awareness among people about the quantification, identification, and possible health effects of IAQ. Airborne pollutants such as volatile organic compounds (VOCs), particulate matter (PM), sulfur dioxide (SO2), carbon monoxide (CO), nitrous oxide (NO), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) microbial spores, pollen, allergens, etc. primarily contribute to IAQ deterioration. This review discusses the sources of major indoor air pollutants, molecular toxicity mecha

Association Between Air Pollution and Viral Infection in Severe Acute Exacerbation of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease.

BACKGROUND: Respiratory pathogen infections and air pollution are main causes of acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (AECOPD). Air pollution has a direct effect on the airway epithelial barrier and the immune system, which can have an influence on infection. However, studies on the relationship between respiratory infections and air pollutants in severe AECOPD are limited. Thus, the objective of this study was to investigate the correlation between air pollution and respiratory pathogen in severe AECOPD. METHODS: This multicenter observational study was conducted by re

Prognostic value of free air under diaphragm on chest radiographs in correlation with peritoneal soiling intraoperatively.

PURPOSE: Gastrointestinal perforation is a significant injury that originates mainly from gastrointestinal ulcers. It is associated with a high rate of morbidity and mortality. The height of the column of the air under the diaphragm can be used to estimate the amount of peritoneal soiling due to viscus perforation. This study aimed to determine the correlation between this estimate and the incidence of morbidity and mortality. METHODS: To achieve this aim, a prospective cohort study was conducted on 83 patients at Kasr al ainy hospital who, between March 2021 and March 2022, presented to the

Association between fine particulate air pollution and the risk of death from lung cancer in Taiwan.

Airborne fine particulate matter (PM2.5) has been classified as a Group I carcinogen leading to lung cancer in humans by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC). In Taiwan, where there is a growing incidence of this disease, lung cancer is currently the leading cause of cancer-associated deaths in women and second leading cause of deaths in men. Because tobacco use is rare in Taiwan, especially amongst women, the high incidence of this type of cancer was suggested to be attributed to the other external contaminants, including airborne PM2 pollution. In this ecologic study, a pos

Critical Time Windows for Air Pollution Exposure and Birth Weight in a Multicity Canadian Pregnancy Cohort.

BACKGROUND: Maternal prenatal exposure to air pollution has been associated with adverse birth outcomes. However, previous studies focused on a priori time intervals such as trimesters reported inconsistent associations. OBJECTIVES: We investigated time-varying vulnerability of birth weight to fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) using flexible time intervals. METHODS: We analyzed 1,300 live, full-term births from Maternal-Infant Research on Environmental Chemicals, a Canadian prospective pregnancy cohort spanning 10 cities (2008-2011). Daily PM2.5 and NO2 concentration

Modeling of ultraviolet propagation from air to human epidermis with wavelength range of 200-300 nm.

Ultraviolet (UV) technology plays an important role in the fields of sterilization, disinfection, and short-range wireless optical communications. In this Letter, a theoretical model to determine the UV radiation intensity (UVRI) on human skin is put forward based on the Monte Carlo method, where the UV wavelength ranges from 200 to 300 nm. Meanwhile, the UVRI evaluation algorithm is provided to reproduce the simulation results. Furthermore, the penetration depth of UV radiation in the human epidermis is investigated, which can be used to assess whether UV radiation causes damage to human heal

Incident cardiovascular disease and long-term exposure to source-specific air pollutants in a Swedish cohort.

BACKGROUND: Air pollution is associated with cardiovascular morbidity and mortality, but its role in the development of congestive heart failure (CHF) and the role of different pollution sources in cardiovascular disease remain uncertain. METHODS: Participants were enrolled in the Malmö Diet and Cancer cohort in 1991-1996 with information on lifestyle and clinical indicators of cardiovascular disease. The cohort participants were followed through registers until 2016. Annual total and local source-specific concentrations of particulate matter less than 10 μm and 2.5 μm (PM10 and PM2.5), black

Differential impact of government lockdown policies on reducing air pollution levels and related mortality in Europe.

Previous studies have reported a decrease in air pollution levels following the enforcement of lockdown measures during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. However, these investigations were mostly based on simple pre-post comparisons using past years as a reference and did not assess the role of different policy interventions. This study contributes to knowledge by quantifying the association between specific lockdown measures and the decrease in NO2, O3, PM2.5, and PM10 levels across 47 European cities. It also estimated the number of avoided deaths during the period. This paper used ne

[Determination of polychlorinated naphthalenes in ambient air by isotope dilution gas chromatography-triple quadrupole mass spectrometry].

Polychlorinated naphthalenes (PCNs) have a structure similar to that of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and represent a new type of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) that are widely present in the environment and biological communities. PCNs can migrate and transform via different environmental media, which severely affects the health of humans and organisms. Researchers have devoted considerable focus on ambient air pollution. Although the current ambient air quality has not yet limited the concentration of PCNs, the Stockholm Convention has required parties to prohibit and eliminate thei

Association of short-term exposure to air pollution with recurrent ischemic cerebrovascular events in older adults.

The acute effects of ambient air pollution on recurrence of ischemic cerebrovascular events (ICEs) remains largely unknown. We therefore conducted a time-stratified case-crossover study of 43,896 patients who were 60 years or older and were admitted to hospital for recurrent ICEs including ischemic stroke and transient ischemic attack in Guangzhou, China during 2016-2019. Based on each patient's home address and pollutant data from its neighboring air quality monitoring stations, we used an inverse distance weighting method to assess exposures to particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter

Use of Air-Classification Technology to Manage Mycotoxin and Arsenic Contaminations in Durum Wheat-Derived Products.

Mycotoxins are the most common natural contaminants and include different types of organic compounds, such as deoxynivalenol (DON) and T-2 and HT-2 toxins. The major toxic inorganic elements include those commonly known as heavy metals, such as cadmium, nickel, and lead, and other minerals such as arsenic. In this study, micronisation and air classification technologies were applied to durum wheat (Triticum turgidum ssp. durum L.) samples to mitigate inorganic (arsenic) and organic contaminants in unrefined milling fractions and final products (pasta). The results showed the suitability of mil

Impact of Rocket Launch and Space Debris Air Pollutant Emissions on Stratospheric Ozone and Global Climate.

Detailed examination of the impact of modern space launches on the Earth's atmosphere is crucial, given booming investment in the space industry and an anticipated space tourism era. We develop air pollutant emissions inventories for rocket launches and re-entry of reusable components and debris in 2019 and for a speculative space tourism scenario based on the recent billionaire space race. This we include in the global GEOS-Chem model coupled to a radiative transfer model to determine the influence on stratospheric ozone (O3) and climate. Due to recent surge in re-entering debris and reusable
