Dysphonia Severity Index in Typically Developing Indian Children.

BACKGROUND: Dysphonia is a variation in an individual's quality, pitch, or loudness from the voice characteristics typical of a speaker of similar age, gender, cultural background, and geographic location. Dysphonia Severity Index (DSI) is a recognized assessment tool based on a weighted combination of maximum phonation time, highest frequency, lowest intensity, and jitter (%) of an individual. Although dysphonia in adults is accurately evaluated using DSI, standard reference values for school-age children have not been studied. AIM: This study aims to document the DSI scores in typically dev

Modification of Distal Tibiofibular Relationship After a Mild Syndesmotic Injury.

BACKGROUND: The hypothesis of this study is that a sprain or tear of 1 or more of the 3 syndesmotic ligaments will result in a significant change in the osseous anatomy relationship when comparing injured to uninjured syndesmosis. Our secondary objective was to determine whether injuries to the syndesmosis as diagnosed on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) could be found using static imaging. METHODS: This is a descriptive radiological study of ankle MRI reports over a 12-year period, from 2 different institutions, and divided in two groups: normal and injured syndesmotic ligaments. A series of

The Lateral Mesencephalic Vein: Surgical Anatomy and Its Role in the Drainage of Tentorial Dural Arteriovenous Fistulae.

BACKGROUND: The lateral mesencephalic vein (LMV) represents an important connection between the infratentorial and supratentorial compartments. It joins the basal vein of Rosenthal and the petrosal system. In our experience with management of tentorial dural arteriovenous fistulas (DAVFs) we have often noted involvement of the lateral mesencephalic vein (LMV) in the venous drainage of these fistulas. METHODS: We reviewed the clinical and angiographic findings of 26 patients with tentorial DAVFs to study the incidence and pattern of drainage through the LMV. In addition, we reviewed the pertin

Impact of Aneurysmal Neck Position in Endovascular Therapy for Anterior Communicating Artery Aneurysms.

Anterior communicating artery (ACoA) aneurysms have a complex architecture and many variations, making endovascular therapy more difficult in some cases. The aim of this study was to investigate whether the neck position of an aneurysm was identifiable for determining the immediate angiographic success and procedural complications in the coiling of the ACoA aneurysms. We conducted a retrospective case review of 40 patients with ACoA aneurysms treated by endovascular therapy from 2008 to 2015. The mean age was 66.8 years. Thirty-five aneurysms were ruptured; five were unruptured. For the analys

Blood flow distribution in cerebral arteries.

High-resolution phase-contrast magnetic resonance imaging can now assess flow in proximal and distal cerebral arteries. The aim of this study was to describe how total cerebral blood flow (tCBF) is distributed into the vascular tree with regard to age, sex and anatomic variations. Forty-nine healthy young (mean 25 years) and 45 elderly (mean 71 years) individuals were included. Blood flow rate (BFR) in 21 intra- and extracerebral arteries was measured. Total cerebral blood flow was defined as BFR in the internal carotid plus vertebral arteries and mean cerebral perfusion as tCBF/brain volume.

Characterization of the anatomy of the anterolateral ligament of the knee using magnetic resonance imaging.

OBJECTIVE: The anterolateral ligament (ALL) may limit tibial internal rotation and pivot-shift following anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction. Previous studies, using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to identify this structure, have been inconsistent. We aimed to further characterize the anatomy of this ligament with reference to previous work. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Institutional Review Board approval was gained and a retrospective study of 154 consecutive 1.5-T MRI studies was performed by a consultant musculoskeletal radiologist. Cases with a lateral compartment or cruciate injury and

Structural brain abnormalities in postural tachycardia syndrome: A VBM-DARTEL study.

Postural tachycardia syndrome (PoTS), a form of dysautonomia, is characterized by orthostatic intolerance, and is frequently accompanied by a range of symptoms including palpitations, lightheadedness, clouding of thought, blurred vision, fatigue, anxiety, and depression. Although the estimated prevalence of PoTS is approximately 5-10 times as common as the better-known condition orthostatic hypotension, the neural substrates of the syndrome are poorly characterized. In the present study, we used magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with voxel-based morphometry (VBM) applying the diffeomorphic anat

Bilateral cleft lip and palate: A morphometric analysis of facial skeletal form using cone beam computed tomography.

Bilateral cleft lip and palate (BCLP) is caused by a lack of merging of maxillary and nasal facial prominences during development and morphogenesis. BCLP is associated with congenital defects of the oronasal facial region that can impair ingestion, mastication, speech, and dentofacial development. Using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) images, 7- to 18-year old individuals born with BCLP (n = 15) and age- and sex-matched controls (n = 15) were retrospectively assessed. Coordinate values of three-dimensional facial skeletal anatomical landmarks (n = 32) were measured from each CBCT image. D

Presence or absence of palmaris longus and fifth superficial flexor digitorum; is there any effect on median nerve surface area in wrist sonography.

BACKGROUND: Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) describes a set of symptoms caused by compression of the median nerve in the wrist, which is the most common site of nerve compression in the upper limb. This syndrome is a primary source of pain and reduced function in these patients, and the cause is compression of the median nerve where it passes beneath the flexor retinaculum in the wrist. OBJECTIVES: The aim of the present cross sectional study is to assess the absence of palmaris longus and fifth superficial flexor digitorum tendon as normal anatomic variations on the sonographic measurement of m

In vitro assessment of the influence of aortic annulus ovality on the hydrodynamic performance of self-expanding transcatheter heart valve prostheses.

BACKGROUND: Although CT-studies as well as intraoperative analyses have described broad anatomic variations of the aortic annulus, which is predominantly found non-circular, commercially available transcatheter aortic heart valve prostheses are circular. In this study, we hypothesize that the in vitro hydrodynamic function of a self-expanding transcatheter heart valve (Medtronic CoreValve) assessed in an oval compartment representing the aortic annulus will differ from the conventionally used circular compartment. METHODS: Medtronic CoreValve prostheses were tested in specifically designed an

Anatomy of the nerves and ganglia of the aortic plexus in males.

It is well accepted that the aortic plexus is a network of pre- and post-ganglionic nerves overlying the abdominal aorta, which is primarily involved with the sympathetic innervation to the mesenteric, pelvic and urogenital organs. Because a comprehensive anatomical description of the aortic plexus and its connections with adjacent plexuses are lacking, these delicate structures are prone to unintended damage during abdominal surgeries. Through dissection of fresh, frozen human cadavers (n = 7), the present study aimed to provide the first complete mapping of the nerves and ganglia of the aort

Restoring tactile and erogenous penile sensation in low-spinal-lesion patients: procedural and technical aspects following 43 TOMAX nerve transfer procedures.

BACKGROUND: The "TOMAX" (TO MAX-imize sensation, sexuality, and quality of life) procedure restores genital sensation in men with low spinal lesions, improving sexual health, as shown previously. It connects the dorsal nerve of the penis to the intact ipsilateral ilioinguinal nerve, unilaterally or bilaterally. This study reports on the technical aspects based on 43 TOMAX nerve transfers. METHODS: In 40 patients with no penile but intact groin sensation, 43 nerve transfers were performed. Breaking constraint: axial patterning in Trichechus (Mammalia: Sirenia).

Meristic variation is often limited in serially homologous systems with high internal differentiation and high developmental modularity. The mammalian neck, an extreme example, has a fixed (at seven) count of diversely specialized segments. Imposition of the mammalian cervical constraint has been tentatively linked to the origin of the diaphragm, which is muscularized by cells that migrate from cervical somites during development. With six cervical vertebrae, the genus Trichechus (manatee) has apparently broken this constraint, although the mechanism of constraint escape is unknown. Hypotheses
