Dynamin-related protein 1 (DRP1) is a central regulator of mitochondrial fission and plays a critical role in maintaining mitochondrial function, distribution, and turnover in reproductive cells. Mitochondrial integrity is essential for oocyte quality, folliculogenesis, fertilization, embryonic development, and ultimately, female reproductive longevity. In this review, we synthesize evidence from mammalian and invertebrate models to illustrate the essential roles of DRP1 in reproductive physiology and aging. Genetic deletion or pharmacologic inhibition of DRP1 results in mitochondrial clusteri

Swine farming practices significantly influence intestinal health, particularly collagen deposition and inflammatory responses in the colon. This study aimed to investigate the effects of three farming systems including β-agonist-free, hygienic, and natural swine production on histological morphology, collagen distribution, crypt architecture and inflammatory cell infiltration in the colons of four-month-old female pigs (Sus domesticus). Colon samples (proximal, middle, and distal segments) were collected and analyzed histologically by using Masson's Trichrome staining. Measurements included t

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Tumor heterogeneity is reflected in cell composition, molecular states, spatial distribution, and microenvironment interactions. Spatial transcriptomics can map in situ expression and cell states but cannot fully explain upstream regulation, while spatial epigenomics provides complementary evidence such as chromatin accessibility, histone modifications, and deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) methylation. This review summarizes the applications of spatial multi-omics and deep learning in prioritizing candidate drug targets in tumors.
METHODS: We reviewed spatial transcriptomics

Sheep fascioliasis causes considerable economic losses globally, yet risk factors for infection in Andes Highlands remain poorly characterized. We conducted a cross-sectional study to determine the risk factors of sheep fascioliasis in rural communities of the Southern highlands of Peru. Data on farm and animal characteristics, management practices, and water sources were collected. Stool samples were geographically tagged and examined microscopically for Fasciola and other parasites eggs. A total of 3,518 sheep from 268 farms were evaluated, of which 40.6% (1,429/3,518) were infected with F.

In Asia, Schistosoma japonicum infects humans and many animal species, making it a zoonotic disease. In Africa, the two major species infecting humans are Schistosoma mansoni and Schistosoma haematobium, which cause mesenteric and urogenital schistosomiasis, respectively. Despite the significance of these parasitic infections for human health, few studies have examined the zoonotic aspects of these parasites. In the initial section of this article, we examine the advancements made in analysing the zoonotic characteristics of S. japonicum, with a particular emphasis on the diverse scenarios obs

Giardia duodenalis is an intestinal protozoan transmitted through contaminated food and water and is a major cause of diarrheal disease worldwide and has been linked to post-infectious sequelae and growth impairment in children. Quantifying parasite burden in vivo is essential for studying infection dynamics and host responses, yet commonly used methods (stool PCR, antigen detection, and terminal trophozoite counts from segments of the intestine) are limited by intermittent stool shedding, uneven parasite distribution, sampling error, and lack of longitudinal data. We developed a bioluminescen

Q fever, caused by the obligate intracellular bacterium Coxiella burnetii, is a widespread zoonotic disease and a notifiable condition in 25 European Union countries. Dairy cattle are important reservoirs, and infection can pose a risk to both animal and human health. The aim of this study was to assess the temporal and spatial prevalence of C. burnetii in dairy farms in Latvia. In the period of January 2016-December 2018, seroprevalence was estimated. Between January 2022 and September 2023, bulk tank milk and pooled milk samples were collected from 5.81% of Latvian dairy farms and analyzed f

INTRODUCTION: While lesion and neurophysiological animal studies point toward a notable involvement of subcortical pathways in the control of low back muscles, little attention has been dedicated to the subject in humans. The StartReact paradigm may allow to indirectly test the potential contribution of the reticulospinal system during motor control, thus addressing this gap of knowledge. In this study, we aimed to compare the potential contribution of the reticulospinal system in the control of low back muscles during voluntary (lumbar spine extension) and postural (upper limb movement elicit

The global prevalence of ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn's disease (CD) is increasing, placing greater burdens on national health systems. The pathophysiology of diarrhea, the commonest debilitating symptom in patients with UC and CD, has been studied more extensively in UC, where it reflects defective colonic Na+ absorption combined with changes in colonic Cl- and K+ transport, which significantly reduce colonic water absorption. Dysfunctional ion transport in patients with UC is accompanied by abnormalities in tight junctional protein distribution and function, which cause the inflamed col

Huntington's disease (HD) is a progressive, autosomal dominant neurodegenerative disorder caused by expanded Cytosine-Adenine-GuanineCAG repeats in the huntingtin (HTT) gene, leading to the production and accumulation of mutant huntingtin protein and subsequent neuronal dysfunction and loss. Current management remains largely symptomatic, with no established disease-modifying therapy. AMT-130 represents a novel and promising approach aimed at directly targeting the underlying molecular pathology of HD. AMT-130 is a one-time gene therapy that utilizes an adeno-associated virus serotype 5 (AAV5)

Recapitulating in vivo conditions of metabolism remains a challenging subject in biomedical research such as ADME-Tox assays (absorption, distribution, metabolism, excretion, and toxicity). The advanced technologies using 3D co-culture methods enabled researchers to develop cell-cell and cell-extracellular matrix (ECM) interactions similar to the natural liver, resulting in the improvement of the metabolic performance of ex vivo cultured primary hepatocytes (PHs). Although PHs are the best candidates in cell-based drug screening methods, access to these cells is limited. The application of ste

Owing to its non-invasive nature, painless drug delivery, and controlled drug loading capacity, the microneedle (MN) technology has recently garnered significant attention in clinical practice. For instance, it has been pervasively employed as an innovative transdermal delivery method in skin disease therapy. However, traditional MN techniques have been associated with challenges regarding biocompatibility, biodegradability, and drug release precision, limiting their clinical efficacy and increasing the risk of side effects resulting from uneven drug distribution. To address these issues, poly

The intestinal mucus layer is a dynamic protective barrier that maintains gut homeostasis, supports immune defense, and regulates host-microbiota interactions. Rodent models have yielded valuable insights, but their intestinal structure and physiology differ from those of humans and pigs. By contrast, the omnivorous pig shares closer anatomical and immunological features with humans, making it a relevant large-animal model in translational studies. In this study, we established a histological workflow for porcine intestine by combining Carnoy's fixation with Alcian Blue-Periodic Acid-Schiff an

Antiretroviral therapy (ART) has markedly improved the life-expectancy of people living with HIV. However, during both HIV infection of humans and simian immunodeficiency virus infection of macaques, virus replication almost invariably rebounds upon ART interruption, due to the long-term persistency of a pool of latently infected cells harbouring integrated, replication-competent virus (known as the virus reservoir). Solving this 'HIV reservoir problem' is the key to achieving a cure (or at least a persistent remission) for HIV infection. Here, we summarize the key scientific evidence supporti

Viruses remain a major global health challenge due to their strict dependence on host cell machinery and limited therapeutic options. Hydrocolloids (natural and semisynthetic) have gained attention as promising scaffolds for antiviral drugs discovery. Their structural variability, biocompatibility, and low toxicity enable diverse mechanisms of action, including inhibition of viral attachment and entry, disruption of replication, immunomodulation, and in some cases direct virucidal effects. This review examines the antiviral activity of hydrocolloids from three main sources: algal (agar, algina

Lameness is a significant global welfare and economic problem in dairy farming. The objective of this study was to explore the relationship between various claw lesions and locomotion scores (LCS). A total of 491 cows from ten Austrian dairy farms were included in the study. Each cow's gait was individually evaluated and an ascending locomotion score ranging from 1 to 5 was assigned. Subsequently, functional hoof trimming was conducted on all cows. During this procedure the claws were examined and all lesions electronically documented. For statistical analysis, the prevalence of each LCS was c

Wild pig (Sus scrofa) populations are expanding across the USA, raising concerns about the ecologic impacts and role as reservoirs for pathogens of significance to human and animal health. Trypanosoma cruzi, the causative agent of Chagas disease, is a recognized risk for humans and domestic dogs in the southern USA. Common wildlife reservoirs of T. cruzi include rodents (e.g., Neotoma spp.), raccoons (Procyon lotor), and Virginia opossums (Didelphus virginiana); however, there have been reports of T. cruzi infection in suids, including a domestic pig (Sus scrofa domesticus) in Mexico and three
