Timing the arrival at 2340 m altitude for aerobic performance.

This study tested the hypothesis that maximal oxygen uptake (VO(2max)) and performance increase upon altitude acclimatization at moderate altitude. Eight elite cyclists were studied at sea level, and after 1 (Day 1), 7 (Day 7), 14 (Day 14) and 21 (Day 21) days of exposure to 2340 m. Capillary blood samples were taken on these days before performing two consecutive maximal exercise trials. Acclimatization increased hemoglobin concentration and arterial oxygen content. On Day 1, VO(2max) and time to exhaustion (at 80% of sea-level maximal power output) decreased by 12.8% (P<0.05) and 25.8% (P<0.

Evaluation of an inspiratory muscle trainer in healthy humans.

The Powerbreathe is an inspiratory muscle trainer promoted as improving inspiratory muscle strength (and consequently exercise performance) in athletes and patients with respiratory disease. No published evidence supports its efficacy. We performed a prospective randomized controlled study in which 12 normal subjects received either Powerbreathe training or sham training for a 6-week period. The primary outcome measure was diaphragm strength evaluated as twitch transdiaphragmatic pressure (Tw Pdi) but secondary outcome measures were provided by full respiratory muscle assessment and cardiopulm

Supramaximal Isometric Holds Enhance Squat Performance: An Integrated Analysis of Barbell Kinematics, Force Production, and Postural Stability.

Optimizing acute performance during strength training and competition has become an important objective for coaches and athletes. This study aimed to analyze the acute effect of supramaximal isometric holds (SMHs) on squat performance integrating barbell kinematics, force production, and postural stability. Fourteen resistance-trained subjects completed six experimental sessions encompassing squats at 60% and 80% of one-repetition maximum (1RM) following a 10 s SMH at 110% of 1RM with either 1 min or 5 min recovery, or in a control condition (CON) with no SMH. Barbell kinematics were assessed

Beyond protection: the growing role of instrumented mouthguards in sports.

Instrumented mouthguards (iMGs) are being used in sport to help with sport-related concussion management, performance optimisation and injury prevention. iMGs represent a significant advancement at the intersection of sports dentistry, biomechanics, and wearable technology. Evolving from traditional protective mouthguards, iMGs integrate sensors that can measure head acceleration events, providing real-time biomechanical data during training and competition. These devices have gained substantial attention due to their potential to support concussion protocols, monitor athlete performance, and

Performance in elite discus throwing is governed by phase-specific timing and velocity transfer.

This study examined the associations between phase-specific kinematic variables and discus throw performance in elite throwers. Video recordings of 23 male (63.39 ± 4.19 m) and 16 female (59.74 ± 7.25 m) discus throwers were analysed to obtain kinematic variables describing phase durations, centre-of-mass (COM) velocities, discus paths and velocities, torso and hip-shoulder-arm positions, and pelvis and torso rotational velocities. Linear mixed models were used to identify phase-specific kinematic variables associated with throwing distance while accounting for repeated trials within athletes.

Examining isokinetic knee peak torque and time to peak torque as predictors of vertical jump height in division I men's basketball players.

The vertical jump (VJ) is one of the most important movements for basketball athletes and therefore determining modifiable predictors of the VJ would aid substantially in crafting more effective training regimens. The purpose of this study was to determine if isokinetic quadriceps strength and torque predict VJ height and which characteristics and testing speed is the strongest predictor of VJ height. Fifteen subjects (age: 18.5 ± 1.0 years, height: 195.9 ± 6.9 cm, weight: 96.2 ± 13.7 kg) from a single Division I men's basketball team were recruited for this study. All participants performed a

Does Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation reduce central and peripheral muscle fatigue in recreational runners? A triple-blind, sham-controlled, randomized, crossover clinical study.

BACKGROUND: Runners seek health benefits and performance improvement. However, fatigue might be considered a limiting factor. Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS) has been investigated to improve performance and reduce fatigue in athletes. While some studies showing that tDCS may improve a variety of physical measures, other studies failed to show any benefit. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the acute effects of tDCS on central and peripheral fatigue compared to a sham intervention in recreational runners. METHODS: This is a triple-blind, controlled, crossover study of 30 recreational runne

Use of functional near-infrared spectroscopy to quantify neurophysiological deficits after repetitive head impacts in adolescent athletes.

There is concern that repetitive head impact exposure (RHIE) may lead to neurophysiological deficits in adolescents. Twelve high school varsity soccer players (5 female) completed the King-Devick (K-D) and complex tandem gait (CTG) assessments pre- and post-season while wearing a functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) sensor. The average head impact load (AHIL) for each athlete-season was determined via a standardised protocol of video-verification of headband-based head impact sensor data. Linear mixed effect models were used to determine the effects of AHIL and task condition (3 K-D c

Joint moments and power in the acceleration phase of bend sprinting.

Joint kinetics of the lower limb (hip, knee, ankle, midfoot and metatarsophalangeal joints) were investigated during the acceleration phase of bend sprinting and straight-line sprinting. Within the bend sprinting literature, it is generally accepted that sprint performance on the bend is restricted by moments in the non-sagittal plane preventing the production of force in the sagittal plane. However, there is limited evidence in conditions representative of elite athletics performance that supports this hypothesis. Three-dimensional kinematic and ground reaction force data were collected from

Diurnal physiological and immunological responses to a 10-km run in highly trained athletes in an environmentally controlled condition of 6 °C.

PURPOSE: The Clara cell protein CC16, secreted from Clara cells in the lung, is discussed as a potential biomarker for toxic effects on the airways. An increased concentration of CC16 in serum may be caused by increased permeability of the lungs. To investigate the changes in P-CC16 in response to an intense exercise bout performed at different times of day (9 am and 4 pm) of highly trained individuals. METHOD: Using a crossover randomized design, 8 runners (mean VO2max 71 ml kg-1 min-1, SD 6) performed a 10-km time trial run, at 9 am and 4 pm, in an environmental chamber set at 6 °C. Lung fu
