Chandelier neurons within the rabbits' cerebral cortex. A Golgi study.

This study has been carried out by light microscopy on 3 Golgi-Kopsch impregnated brains of young adult rabbits. It is shown that chandelier cells exist within the rabbits' cerebral cortex. In the rabbit, the chandelier cell is a medium ranged bipolar interneuron in layer II/III with a characteristic axon which forms a plexus with a diameter of about 350-500 micrometers in the horizontal and 200-350 micrometers in the vertical direction; the end of each ramulus forms the typical "candlestick", a little vertical string of 1-6 boutons on an axon fibre. These boutons form contacts with all parts

The origin of somatostatin fibers in the median eminence and neural lobe of Rana temporaria.

A light microscopic immunocytochemical study of the brain of frogs with hypothalamic lesions was performed in order to obtain evidence concerning the origin of somatostatin fibers in the median eminence and neural lobe of the hypophysis. The results indicate that the somatostatin fibers of the neural lobe originate from somatostatin perikarya located in the prechiasmatic part of the hypothalamus and possibly also in the telencephalon. The somatostatin neurons of the pars ventralis tuberis cinerei do not send axons to the neural lobe. The frog median eminence contains axon terminals of somatost

Development of Parkinson's disease in patients with Narcolepsy.

Although amphetamine drugs can damage dopaminergic axons, it is unknown whether chronic treatment with amphetamine increases the risk of developing Parkinson's disease (PD). Of 1,152 consecutive PD patients, 3 had a prior diagnosis of narcolepsy. This rate is five times higher than expected (p = 0.02). These patients had typical onset of narcolepsy and underwent treatment with amphetamine. Although preliminary, this observation raises the possibility that some factors intrinsic to narcolepsy or its treatment may be a risk factor for PD.

Management of traumatic supraorbital neuroma.

Traumatic neuromas represent proliferative overgrowth of axons, Schwann cells, and fibroblasts at the proximal end of nerve injury or transsection. Although common elsewhere, traumatic neuromas have rarely been noted in the orbits. All but one of these reported lesions occurred after orbital surgery. We present a patient with a painful traumatic neuroma of the supraorbital nerve due to application of a halo fixation device. Neuroma resection and microneural repair resulted in prompt resolution of symptoms without compromise of nerve function.

Sensitivity to curare in patients with upper and lower motor neurone dysfunction.

Sensitivity to the action of nondepolarising relaxants was compared in muscles of upper and lower limbs in four syringomyelic patients undergoing elective neurosurgical procedures. It was observed that muscles with signs of lower motor neurone dysfunction are supersensitive to the action of nondepolarising relaxants. Terminal sprouting of motor axons and the occurrence of newly formed neuromuscular junctions may be responsible for a low synaptic efficacy and may explain the high sensitivity to factors that reduce the safety margin of neuromuscular transmission.

Hyperacute Guillain-Barré Syndrome Reaching Clinical Nadir Within 16 Hours.

A 36-year-old man presented with rapidly progressive lower-limb weakness that reached its nadir within 16 h of the onset. The initial nerve conduction study (NCS) revealed no significant abnormalities except for a decrease in F-waves. Intravenous immunoglobulin therapy was administered, resulting in a gradual improvement in muscle strength. Follow-up NCS revealed findings consistent with axonal damage, and subsequent testing revealed positivity for immunoglobulin G-class anti-GM1 antibodies. The patient was finally diagnosed with acute motor axonal neuropathy, a variant of Guillain-Barré syndr

A novel VRK1 mutation associated with recessive distal hereditary motor neuropathy.

Vaccinia-related kinase 1 (VRK1) mutations can cause motor phenotypes including axonal sensorimotor neuropathy, distal hereditary motor neuropathy (dHMN), spinal muscular atrophy, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. Here, we identify a novel homozygous VRK1 p.W375X mutation causing recessive dHMN. The proband presented with juvenile onset of weakness in the distal lower extremities, slowly progressing to the distal upper limbs, with bilateral pes cavus and no upper motor or sensory neuron involvement. Nerve conduction studies showed a pure motor axonal neuropathy. Our findings extend the ethnic

Associations between tumor necrosis factor-α gene polymorphisms and the risk of Guillain-Barré syndrome and its subtypes: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

This meta-analysis aimed to assess the relationship between tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) polymorphisms and Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) or its subtypes of acute inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (AIDP), acute motor axonal neuropathy (AMAN), and acute motor-sensory axonal neuropathy (AMSAN). A total of six studies with 1013 cases and 1029 controls were included. Our pooled data indicated that TNF-α 308G/A polymorphism was significantly associated with GBS, AMAN, and AMSAN but not with AIDP; TNF-α 857C/T polymorphism was significantly associated with AMAN but not with GBS or AIDP. Understanding Glaucomatous Optic Neuropathy: The Synergy Between Clinical Observation and Investigation.

Glaucoma is a complex disorder of aging defined by the death of retinal ganglion cells and remodeling of connective tissues at the optic nerve head. Intraocular pressure-induced axonal injury at the optic nerve head leads to apoptosis. Loss of retinal ganglion cells follows a slowly progressive sequence. Clinical features of the disease have suggested and corroborated pathological events. The death of retinal ganglion cells causes secondary loss of neurons in the brain, but only as a by-product of injury to the retinal ganglion cells. Although therapy to lower intraocular pressure is moderatel

[Pathology of the Peripheral Nervous System in Guillain-Barré Syndrome].

Guillain-Barré syndrome is composed of two distinct clinicopathological entities: acute inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy (AIDP), and acute motor or motor and sensory axonal neuropathy (AMAN and AMSAN). AIDP is characterized by the patchily distributed demyelinative foci throughout the peripheral nervous system (PNS), whereas in AMAN/AMSAN primary axonal degeneration is observed in the PNS, particularly accentuated at the spinal nerve roots. The aim of this article is to provide an overview of previous findings regarding GBS pathology and thus, to elucidate the pathomechanisms

Role of inflammation and apoptosis in multiple sclerosis: Comparative analysis between the periphery and the central nervous system.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a complex, multifactorial disease associated with damage to the axonal myelin sheaths and neuronal degeneration. The pathognomonic event in MS is oligodendrocyte loss accompanied by axonal damage, blood-brain barrier leakage, inflammation and infiltration of immune cells. The etiopathogenesis of MS is far from being elucidated. However, increasing evidence suggests that the inflammatory and apoptotic responses, occurring in patients either at the peripheral level or the central nervous system (CNS), can play a role. In this review, we give a comprehensive picture of

Neuronal signaling through endocytosis.

The distinctive morphology of neurons, with complex dendritic arbors and extensive axons, presents spatial challenges for intracellular signal transduction. The endosomal system provides mechanisms that enable signaling molecules initiated by extracellular cues to be trafficked throughout the expanse of the neuron, allowing intracellular signals to be sustained over long distances. Therefore endosomes are critical for many aspects of neuronal signaling that regulate cell survival, axonal growth and guidance, dendritic branching, and cell migration. An intriguing characteristic of neuronal sign

Locked-in syndrome in three children with Guillain-Barré syndrome.

Locked-in syndrome is a rare disorder in childhood. It resembles brain death, but patients are fully conscious, and incapable of communicating because of the complete paralysis of voluntary muscles. Although it can be caused by Guillain-Barré syndrome, it is rarely reported in pediatrics. We describe three pediatric cases of locked-in syndrome in patients with Guillain-Barré syndrome presenting acute tetraplegia, areflexia, cranial nerve involvement, and albuminocytologic dissociation in the cerebrospinal fluid. Electrophysiologic studies indicated acute motor axonal polyradiculoneuropathy in

Multineuropathy in a patient with HBV infection, polyarteritis nodosa and celiac disease.

We report on the first association of celiac disease, polyarteritis nodosa and HBV infection in a patient who developed a neuropathy. On admission his general and neurological conditions were severely compromised. Haematological test revealed HBV infection and high levels of antibodies to tissue transglutaminase, endomysium, gliadin. EMG showed sensory-motor asymmetric axonal neuropathy. A sural nerve biopsy revealed fibre loss, axonal degeneration with asymmetrical distribution and fascicular ischaemia. A duodenal biopsy was consistent with celiac disease. The patient was treated with immunos

[The morphological characteristics of the parasympathetic innervation of the pyloric sphincter in the cat].

The method of axonal transport of horse-radish peroxidase was used to detect the localization of neurons in the dorsal motor nucleus of the vagus nerve sending the axons to the pyloric sphincter. The investigation was carried out in cats. Under study were also morphological features of the nodular ganglion responsible for afferent innervation of the sphincter. The maximum amount of the corresponding cells are found in the dorsomedial part of the dorsal motor nucleus in the area from +1.0 to +2.0 mm (with respect to obex). Insulin-like growth factor II stimulates motor nerve regeneration.

Injury to mammalian motor nerves can lead to paralysis, but relatively successful regeneration may occur when conditions are favorable. Elucidation of the mechanism upholding successful regeneration is of theoretical and clinical interest. In this study, the hypothesis that insulin-like growth factor II (IGF-II) can stimulate motor nerve regeneration was tested. When IGF-II was infused continuously near a site of crush on the sciatic nerve, the distance of motor axon regeneration was increased significantly in rats. In contrast, spontaneous regeneration was inhibited when an anti-IGF-II antise

Microvascular skin responses in elderly people with varicose leg ulcers.

The function of cutaneous primary afferent unmyelinated nerves (C-fibres) was assessed by measuring axon reflex vasodilatation in the skin over the arms and feet of 15 elderly patients with chronic venous ulcers using a laser Doppler flowmeter. Dilatation of skin microvasculature in response to nerve-independent stimuli was also assessed. Results were compared with those of control subjects matched for age and sex. The chronic venous ulcer group showed reduced axon reflex vasodilatation in the feet but not the arms. Response to nerve-independent vasodilators was similar in both ulcer patients

Chronic sensory neuronopathy associated with human T-cell lymphotropic virus type I infection.

We described two patients with chronic sensory neuronopathy who had anti-HTLV-I antibody in serum and cerebrospinal fluid but no signs of myelopathy. A sural nerve specimen revealed severe degeneration of myelinated and unmyelinated axons. The second patient had subclinical Sjögren's syndrome suggestive of a possible link among human T-cell lymphotropic virus type I (HTLV-I), Sjögren's syndrome and sensory neuronopathy, respectively. The broad spectrum of neurologic disorders associated with HTLV-I infection now would include chronic sensory neuronopathy.
