Integrating Host Phylogeny and Bacterial Detection Patterns Reveals Contrasting Associations of Buchnera aphidicola and Other Aphid-Associated Bacteria.

Aphids are important agricultural pests that interact with diverse bacterial taxa living within or associated with their bodies. Some bacteria, such as the obligate symbiont Buchnera aphidicola, provide essential nutritional functions and are predominantly inherited vertically, whereas other aphid-associated bacteria may have more variable distributions and ecological roles. In this study, we investigated patterns of association between aphid evolutionary relationships and selected bacterial taxa. Aphids were identified using morphological characteristics and mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase

Screening and Identification of Diesel Biodegrading Bacteria Isolated From Petroleum Hydrocarbon Contaminated Garage Soils of Kericho County, Kenya.

Despite the benefits of petroleum hydrocarbon as essential raw energy sources in many industries, they cause major global environmental pollution. Petroleum hydrocarbons pollutants are highly toxic and recalcitrant, making them dangerous and persistent over long periods in an ecosystem. However, oil contaminated soil is enriched with microorganisms that can utilize petroleum products and hydrocarbons for their growth, nutrition, and metabolic activities. This study aimed to isolate and characterize hydrocarbons-degrading bacteria capable of degrading hydrocarbons in soil samples obtained from

Cultivable diversity and plant growth-promoting traits of free-living bacteria from coffee soils under contrasting fertilization systems.

Brazilian coffee production relies heavily on mineral fertilizers, particularly nitrogen-based inputs. However, the intensive use of these fertilizers is associated with nutrient losses, elevated production costs, and environmental impacts, highlighting the need for more sustainable alternatives. In this context, plant growth-promoting bacteria (PGPB) represent promising resources for improving nutrient use efficiency and reducing dependence on synthetic inputs. Nevertheless, the cultivable bacterial fraction associated with coffee soils remains poorly characterized under contrasting fertiliza

Soil-Dwelling Bacteria Display Tolerance Against Typical Antibiotic Serum Levels in an Ex Vivo Model of Traumatized Tissue.

INTRODUCTION: Military wounds often contain large amounts of necrotic, avascular tissue that provide an ideal home for environmental and endogenous flora to dwell. Debridement mitigates infection but cannot be performed until the casualty is transported to a surgically equipped site, sometimes days after initial injury. Meanwhile, opportunistic pathogens spread throughout the wound site. Systemic antibiotic therapies fail to eradicate these soil microorganisms potentially because they dwell in an antibiotic-tolerant phenotype. Laboratory tests that incorporate environment soil may promote the

Sequence-encoded determinants of regional mutational plasticity: comparative analysis of PE_PGRS genes in Mycobacterium tuberculosis and other bacteria.

The PE_PGRS gene family in Mycobacterium tuberculosis exhibits extensive sequence variability across genotypes, which is consistent with antigenic divergence. Here we investigate how Mtb-despite lacking horizontal gene transfer-balances genomic stability with adaptive plasticity. Comparative analysis of 88 bacterial genomes reveals that PE_PGRS genes exhibit features facilitating mutability, including a significantly elevated CGGC tetramer density (mean 4.97 per 100 nt; range 1.7-7.4) compared with the genome-wide average (1.62 per 100 nt; p = 0.011) and depleted in out-of-frame stop codons, p

Lactic acid bacteria and endogenous ethanol mediate proton pump inhibitor-associated MASLD: a multicohort cross-sectional mediation analysis.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Proton pump inhibitor (PPI) use has been associated with metabolic dysfunction associated with steatotic liver disease (MASLD) in multiple studies. While the association is confounded by various risk factors, such as BMI and age, a potential mediating factor of the microbiome has been suggested. In this study, we aimed to identify bacterial clades with the highest mediating potential and evaluate the serially mediated path through microbially derived endogenous ethanol. METHODS: Microbiome mediation analysis of PPI use and MASLD was conducted in two cohorts. In a bariatric

Host methylglyoxal activates the Listeria virulence program, allowing bacteria to evade inflammatory phagocytes by cell-to-cell spread.

Methylglyoxal is a reactive aldehyde produced by macrophages as part of their antimicrobial innate immune arsenal. Our prior work showed that Listeria monocytogenes relies on glyoxalase A (GloA) and bacterial glutathione to detoxify methylglyoxal and that loss of GloA severely impairs bacterial virulence in mice and results in a 100 to 1,000 increase in bacterial mutation frequency. Glutathione is required for both methylglyoxal detoxification and for allosteric activation of the master virulence regulator PrfA, underscoring its central, yet complicated role in pathogenesis. We previously demo

Application-focused validation of a viability-selective PMA-qPCR assay for selected skin-associated and cosmetic-relevant bacteria.

Accurate quantification of viable bacteria is essential for ensuring product safety and quality in the food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetics industries. However, conventional plate culture methods are time-consuming and fail to detect viable but non-culturable (VBNC) cells, which frequently occur under environmental stress or preservation conditions and can influence product stability and safety. Accordingly, the need for a quantification method that accounts for VBNC cells has increased. In this study, we optimized and validated a viability-selective quantification method by combining propidium

Microbial succession, identification, and spoilage potential of dominant bacteria in ready-to-eat salmon under different storage conditions.

As a popular high-value seafood with rich nutritional benefits, ready-to-eat salmon is highly susceptible to microbial spoilage, posing risks to its quality and food safety. This study investigated bacterial community dynamics in commercial ready-to-eat salmon under different temperatures (4 °C/25 °C) combined with packaging conditions (aerobic/vacuum) using high-throughput 16S rRNA gene sequencing, and further explored the species-specific spoilage characteristics of five specific spoilage organisms (SSOs) via culture-dependent methods. The results revealed that bacteria under vacuum storage

Integrated Analysis of Paired Crude Oil and Produced Water Reveals Stress-Tolerant Hydrocarbon-Degrading Bacteria with Bioremediation Potential.

Oilfield microbiome studies have extensively characterized microbial community composition or isolated individual hydrocarbon degraders, but integrated exploration of cultivable functional bacteria from paired crude-oil and produced-water environments remains limited, particularly for strains combining hydrocarbon utilization with stress-tolerance and biosurfactant-related traits. In this study, paired crude-oil and produced-water samples from the Huoshaoshan Oilfield were investigated by combining 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing with culture-dependent isolation and functional screening. New retron systems from environmental bacteria identify triggers of anti-phage defense and expand tools for genome editing.

Retrons are bacterial immune systems that protect a bacterial population against phages by killing infected hosts. Retrons typically comprise a reverse transcriptase (RT), a template noncoding RNA that is partially reverse transcribed into RT-DNA, and a toxic effector. The reverse transcriptase (RT), noncoding RNA, and RT-DNA complex sequester the toxic effector until triggered by phage infection, at which point the toxin is released to induce cell death. Due to their ability to produce single-stranded DNA in vivo, retrons have also been engineered to produce donor templates for genome editing
