Oral contraceptive use and clinical outcomes in patients with multiple sclerosis.

Experimental and clinical data suggest a role of sex steroids in the pathogenesis of multiple sclerosis (MS). Scant information is available about the potential effect of oral contraceptive (OC) use on the prognosis of the disease. We aimed to evaluate this. The study population consisted of 132 women with relapsing-remitting MS before receiving disease modifying treatment and a mean disease duration 6.2 (SD 5.1) years. Three groups of patients were distinguished according to their OC behavior: [1] never-users, patients who never used OC [2] past-users, patients who stopped OC use before disea

Self-mutilative behaviors in male substance-dependent inpatients and relationship with anger and aggression: mediator effect of childhood trauma.

The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship of self-mutilation (SM) with anger and aggression in male substance-dependent inpatients. Also, we wanted to evaluate the mediator effect of childhood trauma on these relationships while controlling variables such as age, substance of dependence (alcohol/drug), and negative effect. Participants were consecutively admitted 200 male substance-dependent inpatients. Patients were investigated with the Self-mutilative Behaviour Questionnaire, the Childhood Trauma Reports, the Buss-Perry's Aggression Questionnaire, the State-Trait Anger Expre

Surface design for controlled crystallization: the role of surface chemistry and nanoscale pores in heterogeneous nucleation.

Current industrial practice for control of primary nucleation (nucleation from a system without pre-existing crystalline matter) during crystallization from solution involves control of supersaturation generation, impurity levels, and solvent composition. Nucleation behavior remains largely unpredictable, however, due to the presence of container surfaces, dust, dirt, and other impurities that can provide heterogeneous nucleation sites, thus making the control and scale-up of processes that depend on primary nucleation difficult. To develop a basis for the rational design of surfaces to contro

Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender adolescent school victimization: implications for young adult health and adjustment.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent school victimization due to lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender (LGBT) status is commonplace, and is associated with compromised health and adjustment. Few studies have examined the long-term implications of LGBT school victimization for young adult adjustment. We examine the association between reports of LGBT school victimization and young adult psychosocial health and risk behavior. METHODS: The young adult survey from the Family Acceptance Project included 245 LGBT young adults between the ages of 21 and 25 years, with an equal proportion of Latino and non-Latino

Higher cortisol levels in spring and fall in patients with major depression.

BACKGROUND: Multiple lines of evidence suggest that there are seasonal effects on mood and behavior, and that these effects are related to serotonergic and hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) function. This study sought to determine whether there is a seasonal effect on clinical parameters, baseline cortisol and prolactin levels, and cortisol and prolactin responses to fenfluramine administration in subjects with major depression. METHODS: In all, 136 subjects with major depression entered the study. Sixty-two subjects who had a major depressive episode (MDE) in Spring or in Fall (the Spring

Levetiracetam Interferes With the L-dopa priming process in MPTP-lesioned drug-naive marmosets.

OBJECTIVE: Levetiracetam (LEV; Keppra, UCB Pharma) has been shown to reduce established l-3,4 dihydroxyphenylalanine (l-dopa)-induced dyskinesia. This study investigated whether LEV can modify induction of dyskinesia by l-dopa or the process of priming. METHODS: Drug-naive MPTP (1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine) -lesioned marmosets were treated for 21 days with l-dopa/LEV or l-dopa alone. Subsequently, the animals were left untreated for 1 week and then both groups were challenged with a single dose of l-dopa alone on day 29. Behavior was assessed by automated activity counts and

Iron-catalyzed oxidation of arsenic(III) by oxygen and by hydrogen peroxide: pH-dependent formation of oxidants in the Fenton reaction.

The oxidation kinetics of As(III) with natural and technical oxidants is still notwell understood, despite its importance in understanding the behavior of arsenic in the environment and in arsenic removal procedures. We have studied the oxidation of 6.6 microM As(II) by dissolved oxygen and hydrogen peroxide in the presence of Fe(II,III) at pH 3.5-7.5, on a time scale of hours. As(III) was not measurably oxidized by O2, 20-100 microM H2O2, dissolved Fe(III), or iron(III) (hydr)-oxides as single oxidants, respectively. In contrast, As(III) was partially or completely oxidized in parallel to the

Culturally Responsive Sexual and Reproductive Health Education to Address HIV Risk Among African-Born Immigrant Women.

ObjectiveAfrican-born immigrants (ABIs) represent a growing demographic in the United States, constituting nearly half of the foreign-born Black population. They face distinct health challenges, with ABI women experiencing disproportionately high rates of HIV incidence. A critical factor contributing to this health disparity is limited sexual and reproductive health (SRH) literacy. The primary objective of the study was to pilot and evaluate an intervention that employed a culturally responsive, community-led approach to sexual and reproductive health (SRH) education for HIV prevention among A

Exploring the profile and risk factors associated with self-harm ideation and behaviors in adolescents with high psychoticism.

BACKGROUND: As a core personality trait closely linked to mental health outcomes, psychoticism warrants particular attention in adolescent populations. The association between elevated psychoticism levels and self-harm ideation and behaviors (SIB) remained insufficiently characterized, especially regarding specific risk profiles. This study aims to delineate SIB characteristics and identify risk factors among adolescents with high psychoticisme. METHODS: In this large scale cross-sectional study, 6,027 adolescents aged 16-18 years scoring ≥70th percentile on the psychoticism dimension (Revise

Factors impacting military emergency medicine residents' sleep and barriers to seeking help: A sequential exploratory mixed-methods study.

Emergency medicine (EM) resident physicians face unique challenges in adhering to the principles of sleep hygiene due to the nature of EM shift work. They are at higher risk for sleep disorders, sleep-related errors and accidents, and impaired performance due to constantly changing schedules. Military residents also perceive a stigma against seeking mental health care and taking sleeping medications. This mixed-methods study investigated sleep quality and barriers to seeking care among EM residents at a single center, three-year, Active-Duty military EM residency program. A survey was made ava

Improved implicit self-esteem is associated with extended antidepressant effects following a novel synergistic intervention.

INTRODUCTION: In a previously published randomized controlled trial, automated self-association training (ASAT), a novel digital intervention, was found to extend the rapid antidepressant effect of a single infusion of ketamine for at least 30 days. In this secondary analysis, we aimed to understand the potential role of implicit self-esteem in the combined antidepressant effect of ketamine and ASAT training, by investigating the novel synergistic treatment's effects on implicit self-associations and their relation to symptom improvement. METHODS: A total of 154 adults (ages 18-60) with treat
