[Auto- and hetero-aggression in Gilles de la Tourette syndrome].

A 29-year old patient with Gilles de la Tourette's syndrome exhibited severe compulsive self-mutilation and hostility leading to long-term hospitalisation. A history of refractory self-mutilation increases the risk for suicidal acts, which represent a rare complication in the course of the Tourette disorder.

Some aspects of family interventions in schizophrenia. II: Financial considerations.

The direct costs to the mental health services for patients who participated in a trial of a behavioural family intervention to reduce schizophrenic relapse were estimated. Comparisons were made between two patient groups from households of high expressed emotion (HEE): one group received a nine-month family intervention (HEE Intervention) and the other group routine treatment (HEE Control). A third group consisted of patients from low-EE households (LEE Control). The significant decrease in relapse rates in the HEE Intervention group compared with the HEE Control group has previously been rep

Anorexia nervosa. Treatment and triggering factors.

In the period from 1976 to 1983, 84 anorexia nervosa (AN) patients were treated in the Medical and Child Psychiatry Units of the University Hospital of Bergen. Five were men, 79 women. The criteria used for diagnosis are DSM-III (1) A,B,D and E, but not C. All the patients in this study were treated according to the methods of Bassøe & Eskeland (2) and Bassøe (3) in order to give the patients the necessary insight into the pathophysiology of hunger and to inform them about the symptoms. Those of the patients with personal problems connected with their family or social milieu were given help th

Different rates of improvement of different symptoms in combined pharmacological and behavioral treatment of agoraphobia.

This study was designed to see whether the high vs low serum level of imipramine influenced the outcome of in vivo exposure therapy on patients with agoraphobia. Thirty-six subjects completed the Hopkins Symptom Checklist-90 one week before treatment and weekly throughout treatment. Both groups demonstrated equal improvement. It was noted that the rate of improvement differed for different symptom subscales: (1) Hostility, Paranoia and Psychotic symptom ratings improved over the first three weeks of treatment, (2) Interpersonal Sensitivity, Anxiety and Depression ratings improved throughout th

Psychotherapy with gay/lesbian couples and their children in "stepfamilies": a challenge for marriage and family therapists.

As increasing numbers of gay/lesbian parents and their children enter into "stepfamily-like" relationships with a gay partner, they are beginning to seek therapy for difficulties peculiar to stepfamily living involving two same-sex partners. This paper focuses on the difficulties experienced by gay parents and children in a step-relationship, and seeks to sensitize mental health professionals to issues specific to intervention with such families. Effective therapy with these families requires that therapists be sensitive to their personal biases and prejudices with regard to gay men and women

[Results of concentration training in normally intelligent students with poor concentration].

The contribution reports on the efficiencies of two different concentration training programmes tested on 40 normally intelligent boys with severely reduced concentration. Twenty of the boys received rhythmic music therapy and the other 20 received a special teaching programme based on psychological principles. Psychostimulants were also administered to 10 boys in each group. The success of treatment was assessed by comparison with an untreated group of pupils with reduced concentration. The boys who received additional psychostimulants achieved the greatest gain in learning as a result of con

A pilot study of medication and group therapy for obesity in a group of physicians.

This pilot study evaluated group therapy and the appetite suppressant activity of phenylpropanolamine in a group of juvenile-onset obese physicians. In spite of their educational level and their medical sophistication, they were not previously successfully motivated to lose weight. Twelve obese but otherwise healthy physicians participated in a program using phenylpropanolamine one or two times per day and attending weekly group therapy that focused on weight reduction, dietary compliance, physical appearance, and psychodynamics of obesity. Those who continued participation in both the medicat

Obesity. Pathogenesis, consequences, and approaches to treatment.

Research has demonstrated that obesity is far more complex than simply eating too much. Although the individual who is only modestly overweight is probably guilty of overindulgence, the grossly obese individual is the victim of a far more complex disorder with genetic, metabolic, psychosocial, and perhaps central nervous system malfunctions all interacting in a poorly understood fashion. The medical consequences of morbid obesity are considerable and demand the patient's and the physician's attention. This article discusses pathogenesis, consequences, and approaches to treatment.

Functional male dyspareunia: a case study.

An apparently successful treatment of a male with a long history of dyspareunia is discussed. The case is unique not only because the subject was male but also in that the etiology was functional. The case demonstrates the multicausal nature of dyspareunia as well as the need for an approach utilizing both a psychodynamic and behavioral methodology.

Clinical Markers of 6 Pre-dominant Coping Behaviors in Living With Parkinson Disease: A Convergent Mixed Methods Study.

People with Parkinson's disease (PwP) experience a variety of symptoms and fluctuations in these, which they have to cope with every day. In tailoring a person-centered treatment to PwP there is a lack of knowledge about the association between pre-dominant coping behaviors and clinical markers among PwP. To describe and compare specific clinical markers between 6 suggested coping behaviors. Thirty-four PwP, who previously had been classified into 6 different pre-dominant coping behaviors, were included in this mixed methods study. Six primary variables were included in the descriptive analysi

Effects of behavioral activation on default mode network connectivity in subthreshold depression: A preliminary resting-state fMRI study.

BACKGROUND: Subthreshold depression is a risk factor for major depressive disorder, and it is known to have a negative impact on quality of life (QOL). Although behavioral activation, which is one type of cognitive behavioral therapy, is an effective psychological intervention for subthreshold depression, neural mechanisms of behavioral activation are unclear. Enhanced functional connectivity between default mode network (DMN) and the other regions has been demonstrated in participants with subthreshold depression. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of behavioral activation o

Punding in non-demented Parkinson's disease patients: Relationship with psychiatric and addiction spectrum comorbidity.

Punding is a stereotyped behavior characterized by an intense fascination with a complex, excessive, non-goal oriented, repetitive activity, associated with dopaminergic replacement therapy (DRT) in patients affected by Parkinson's disease (PD) and with dopamine agonists in several conditions. We studied 25 PD patients with punding behaviors, and compared them to 130 PD controls. The psychiatric evaluation included: the Snaith-Hamilton Pleasure Scale (SHAPS); the SCales for Outcomes in PArkinson's disease-Psychiatric Complications (SCOPA-PC); the Barratt Impulsiveness Scale, Version 11 (BIS-11

Whose perceptions matter more: mine or my group's? An actor-partner interdependence analysis disaggregating between-person and between-session effects of group climate perceptions on intimate behaviors.

Group climate refers to the atmosphere that is both created and experienced by a group of people. Theoretically, the "climate" of a group should therefore be related to the behaviors of its members during group sessions; however, this has not been empirically tested. A longitudinal design was used to examine the relationship between group member perceptions of engagement and conflict and group member intimate behaviors during the group session. Data came from 73 incarcerated women participating in 6 manualized (Trauma Recovery and Empowerment Model) therapy groups. At each session, group membe

Assessment of recovery in the hemiparkinson rat: drug-induced rotation is inadequate.

Recovery from apomorphine-induced rotational behavior was compared to sensorimotor and motor function in hemiparkinsonian rats receiving intrastriatal grafts of astrocytes expressing recombinant tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) or control beta-galactosidase (beta-gal). Rats received unilateral intranigral infusions of 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA). Animals with large lesions, as determined by apomorphine-induced rotation, received grafts of astrocytes into the denervated striatum. Behavioral recovery was assessed on days 14-16 post-transplantation using apomorphine-induced rotation, somatosensory neglec

Divergent Behavioral and Circuit-Level Adaptations to Acute and Chronic Gastric Electrical Stimulation.

Anxiety disorders are highly prevalent and often refractory to existing treatments, motivating the development of alternative neuromodulatory strategies. Peripheral bioelectronic approaches targeting the gut-brain axis such as vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) demonstrate that modulation of visceral afferent pathways can influence central emotional circuits. Gastric electrical stimulation (GES) is a clinically established therapy for gastrointestinal motility disorders. While the stomach is densely innervated by vagal afferents, the effect of GES on anxiety-related behavior has not been systematic
