Background and Objectives: Surface electromyography (EMG) is widely used to assess muscle activation. However, direct interpretation of its functional biomechanical consequences remains challenging. This study aimed to develop and evaluate an EMG-driven musculoskeletal simulation framework for investigating how controlled modifications of muscle activation patterns influence joint-level biomechanics in the upper limb. The objective was not to reproduce specific clinical pathologies but to enable systematic virtual scenario analysis of activation-dependent movement alterations. Materials and Me

The purpose of this study was to quantify the biomechanical performance of the medial longitudinal arch (MLA) in the normal foot (NF), flatfoot (FF), and flatfoot with orthotic insoles (FF + insole) under different gait loads to identify their movement response strategies. Male runners with NF and flexible FF were instructed to walk and run using a rearfoot strike pattern. Subsequently, the FF group underwent the same test again while wearing orthotic insoles. The Qualisys capture system and Kistler force platform were synchronized to collect kinetic and kinematic data. A mixed-design two-way

PURPOSE: Musculoskeletal (MSK) modeling and ultrasound imaging (USI) are complementary techniques that, when combined with three-dimensional gait analysis (3DGA), provide insights into muscle and/or muscle-tendon unit (MTU) characteristics during gait. Despite their potential, a synthesis of their current use during 3DGA in populations with neuromotor impairments has not been conducted. This scoping review aimed to examine how MSK modeling and USI are used alongside 3DGA to assess muscle and MTU characteristics in populations with neuromotor impairments and evaluate the potential clinical impl

Ventricular assist devices (VADs) integrate multiple branches of applied mechanics within a single implanted system, spanning rotor-scale haemodynamics, nonlinear ventricular wall mechanics, blood trauma, and closed-loop control under changing physiological loads. This review aims to unify five mathematical frameworks central to VAD modelling: ventricular mechanics, blood rheology and damage, partial differential equation (PDE)-based device haemodynamics, pump engineering, and nonlinear heart-device dynamics. By bringing these domains together, the review clarifies their interactions and highl

Rugby players undergo numerous head acceleration events (HAE), increasing injury risk versus non-contact sports. This prospective observational cohort study used instrumented mouthguards to analyze one season of boys (n = 60, mean age 14.5 years ± 1.1) and girls (n = 63, mean age 14.4 years ± 1.6) rugby players. Linear regression was used to calculate how height, weight, age and maturity offset (age relative to peak height velocity (PHV), only conducted with U13 boys (n = 19, mean age 13.3 years ± 0.5) and U14 girls (n = 22, mean age 12.8 years ± 0.8)) predicted HAE magnitude and seasonal coun

Although a large percentage of pregnancy-related morbidity and mortality is the result of cardiovascular diseases, little is known about the underlying mechanisms that contribute to the development of adverse cardiac changes during pregnancy. It is clear that during pregnancy, the heart adapts to increased ventricular preload through the development of a reversible, pregnancy-induced cardiac hypertrophy. Cardiomyocyte growth must be supported by changes in the cardiac extracellular matrix (ECM), an extremely diverse and dynamic set of components, whose composition and regulation affect cardiac

This study examined whether a geometry-based movement variability framework (3D Goal Equivalent Manifold, GEM) could detect persistent motor control deficits across a competitive season in female soccer players with a history of concussion, and compared its performance with the traditional 2D GEM approach. Twenty-five female varsity soccer players (11 with concussion history within 3 years, 14 without) completed bilateral bodyweight squats synchronized with a metronome (40 beats per minute) at pre-, mid-, and post-season. Whole-body kinematics were captured using a markerless motion capture sy

BACKGROUND: While both lateral extra-articular tenodesis (LET) and anterolateral ligament reconstruction (ALLR) address rotational knee instability, their techniques and targeted anatomy differ, potentially leading to variations in effectiveness and stability.
PURPOSE: To conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis of basic science laboratory-based cadaveric studies comparing anterior tibial translation (ATT) and resistance to internal tibial rotation between ALLR and LET, both in combination with anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction (ACLR).

Stable fixation of displaced simple transverse olecranon fractures is required to maintain reduction under triceps traction and enable early elbow motion. Although Weber tension band fixation is widely used, the biomechanical influence of tension band material (cable vs cerclage wire) across different pin/anchorage designs remains unclear. This study compared resistance to fracture-line separation among six Weber-based constructs in a standardized synthetic ulna model. Sixty commercially available synthetic ulnae were osteotomized to create a transverse olecranon fracture model (Mayo type IIA)

BACKGROUND: Tango has therapeutic potential to improve gait and quality of life in populations with locomotor impairments. However, quantitative biomechanical and metabolic evidence remains limited. Tango walking in the leader role involves gait modifications that may affect locomotor economy. This study quantified metabolic cost, mechanical work, centre of mass motion and energetics during tango walking, and compared these variables with self-selected walking at similar speeds. We hypothesized that tango walking would increase cost of transport, reduce efficiency, and be associated with modif

The cervical spine is highly vulnerable to injury during high-acceleration emergency ejection because of its flexibility, head-torso inertial lag, and dependence on coordinated muscle function. This study investigated the biomechanical effects of selective neck muscle deactivation on cervical spine kinematics under vertical acceleration loading using a validated C0-T1 finite element model based on a Hill-type muscle model. A 10-G vertical acceleration was applied, and individual muscle deactivation was simulated by reducing muscle activation to 0.005 at 80 ms. The results showed all muscular e

Craniofacial bones, as essential components of the human head, play a crucial role in both physiological function and morphological evolution through their development and the maintenance of homeostasis. Unlike skeletal bones of the trunk, which originate from the mesoderm, craniofacial bones originate from the ectodermal neural crest, presenting challenges in directly applying findings from long bone studies. Their development occurs via intramembranous ossification, endochondral ossification, and specialized osteogenic patterns, and is co-regulated by both mechanical forces and molecular sig

Proximal femoral nail antirotation (PFNA) may not provide sufficient control of unstable fracture fragments in complex intertrochanteric fractures. The modified candy-package wiring technique may supplement PFNA by improving resistance to rotational and shear displacement. This biomechanical model study compared PFNA combined with modified candy-package wiring with PFNA alone in an Evans type III intertrochanteric fracture model. Ten standardized femoral fracture models were randomly allocated to a PFNA group (n = 5) or a PFNA plus modified candy-package wiring group (PFNA + MCW group; n = 5).

Back pain is a pervasive issue affecting a significant portion of the population, often worsened by certain movements of the lower back. Assessing these movements is important for helping clinicians prescribe appropriate physical therapy. However, it can be difficult to monitor patients' movements remotely outside the clinic. High-fidelity data from motion capture sensors can be used to classify different movements, but these sensors are costly and impractical for use in free-living environments. Motion Tape (MT), a new fabric-based wearable sensor, addresses these issues by being low cost and

BACKGROUND: Prior research has demonstrated the clinical efficacy of two specialized Tuina techniques, namely, high-speed oblique Tuina (HSOT) and low-speed oblique Tuina (LSOT), in the treatment of lumbar disc herniation (LDH). These techniques integrate principles of traditional Chinese medicine with modern manual therapy. Despite their proven therapeutic benefits, the biomechanical effects of HSOT and LSOT on spinal structures remain poorly understood.
AIM: Finite element analysis (FEA) was utilized to investigate the biomechanical effects of HSOT and LSOT on a patient with LDH, aiming to

Dysfunctional elbow osteoarthritis poses a therapeutic dilemma in young patients with high activity levels and corresponding demands on elbow mobility. In selected cases, interposition arthroplasty of the elbow remains a viable salvage option and alternative to primary prosthetic replacement. The primary objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of interposition arthroplasty on elbow joint contact mechanics, comparing Achilles tendon (AT) and fascia lata (FL) grafts. Ten fresh-frozen human elbow specimens underwent static axial loading (50-400 N) at 20° flexion in native state and fo

This study investigated how upper-body joint and muscle coordination strategies are related and adapted under fatigue during sustained dead hangs, a task relevant to climbing performance. Eleven climbers performed a dead hang until failure. Joint coordination variability (rCV) was assessed using a modified vector coding method in kinematic data. Muscle coordination was analyzed through EMG linear and non-linear dependencies between signals with coherence (β/γCOH) and mutual information (β/γMI) at beta and gamma bands. Fatigue induced joint-specific changes in coordination variability, with wri

AIMS: Biological augmentation is necessary in chronic sternoclavicular dislocations. However, the placement of drill holes for a graft can be difficult at that region. The aim of this study was to evaluate, as an early proof-of-concept, the feasibility of using a locally available clavicular periosteal flap (CPF) or sternal periosteal flap (SPF) for sternoclavicular joint (SCJ) stabilization and to biomechanically test the periosteal flaps.
METHODS: A cadaveric anatomic feasibility and biomechanical study (level of evidence V) was performed on nine SCJs. The CPF was mobilized from three sides
