BACKGROUND: Hatching failure is common in the eggs of wild birds, yet its variation in relation to ecological and life history factors remains poorly understood. Understanding these patterns is essential for explaining reproductive strategies and evolutionary trade-offs in birds. RESULTS: In a comprehensive comparative study, we found that the previously recognized latitudinal decline in avian hatching failure rates is driven by a greater proportion of eggs failing in larger clutches at lower latitudes. We suggest that this pattern could reflect higher exposure to ambient conditions in larger

Heat stress is a major constraint to sustainable poultry production in tropical regions. This study evaluated the effects of Lactobacillus plantarum 1582-fermented red onion bulb extract (LFRO), supplied through drinking water, on growth performance, cecal microbiota, and excreta gas emissions in heat-stressed yellow-feather chickens. A total of 300 one-day-old male Rilai chicks were assigned to four treatments in a completely randomized design with five replicate pens of 15 birds each: unsupplemented control or LFRO at 25, 50, or 100 mg/L in drinking water. Birds were reared for 70 days under

OBJECTIVES: Avian influenza (AI) continues to occur among poultry and wild birds, and human infection with AI viruses can result from exposure to infected birds. The continued occurrence of human cases overseas has highlighted the importance of preventing the introduction and spread of the virus as a major public health priority. This study aims to describe the prevention and response activities for AI human infection in the metropolitan area during the 2025-2026 season and identifies areas for improvement.
METHODS: In collaboration with public health and livestock departments across four met

The pharmacokinetics of tylvalosin, a veterinary macrolide antibiotic, were evaluated in 2 groups of geese, 26 groups of pigeons, and 26 groups of quail (n = 6 birds/group) following a single intravenous (IV) and oral therapy. Tylvalosin concentrations in plasma samples obtained at various intervals up to 48 h post-dosing were assessed employing high-performance liquid chromatography. Furthermore, 30 birds of each species were given tylvalosin orally at 25 mg/kg/day for 5 days for investigating its residues in tissues. After IV injection, tylvalosin exhibited wide distribution in the three spe

In 2022, the World Health Organization (WHO) published the Fungal Priority Pathogens List (FPPL), yet its application has remained largely focused on human medicine, with limited consideration of animal hosts and veterinary diagnostics. This retrospective study aimed to characterise the occurrence of WHO critical- and high-priority yeasts in veterinary clinical submissions in Portugal within an explicit One Health framework. All yeast-positive submissions received by a Portuguese veterinary diagnostic laboratory between 2019 and 2026 were reviewed. Isolates were identified phenotypically, by a

Large gulls (Laridae) have expanded from coastal regions into inland Central Europe, where they increasingly exploit fishponds, landfills, and urban habitats. This shift alters their exposure to trematode parasites and their role in linking parasite transmission across ecosystems. We examined the trematode communities of 5 gull species (Larus argentatus, Larus cachinnans, Larus canus, Larus hyperboreus, and Larus marinus) collected in the eastern Czech Republic between 2022 and 2025. Complete helminthological examinations were performed on 207 individuals. Trematodes were detected in 82% of th

Pre-slaughter inspection activities encompass clinical, documentary, and sanitary checks; post-mortem inspection identifies abnormalities in chicken carcasses, such as lesions caused by disease or inadequate handling and processing, leading to partial or total condemnation. The objectives were to determine the causes of condemnation for poultry carcasses slaughtered in Mato Grosso, identify the triggering factors, and evaluate the economic impact on the chicken production chain between January 2017 and December 2024. This was a retrospective, exploratory study using data from the Federal Inspe

Coproparasitological examinations are essential non-invasive tools for detecting endoparasites in wild animals; however, the lack of methodological standardization and the variable performance of available techniques remain important challenges. This study evaluated the agreement and comparative performance of the Simplified Parasite Detection Method (SPDM) relative to three routinely used coproparasitological comparator methods: spontaneous sedimentation, Willis-Mollay flotation, and Mini-FLOTAC®. A total of 143 pooled fecal samples from mammals, birds, and reptiles were analyzed. Overall, SP

The Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza Virus (HPAIV) H5 clade 2.3.4.4b has caused severe outbreaks in domestic and wild birds worldwide since its emergence in 2014, and especially since 2020, with outbreaks in Europe and North America. The introduction of the virus into South America was reported for the first time in Colombia in October 2022, followed by outbreaks in other South American countries affecting poultry, wild birds, mammals, and humans. In this study, a phylogenetic and mutation analysis of the hemagglutinin (HA) gene of HPAIV H5N1 2.3.4.4b viruses isolated in South America was per

The present study investigates the effect of partially supplemented trace minerals zinc (Zn), manganese (Mn), and copper (Cu) using 2 different sources: inorganic mineral (IM) or amino acid-complexed minerals (AACM), in pullet diets during 6 to 14 weeks. A total of 1120 Lohmann Brown Lite pullets were distributed into 40 experimental cages with 2 dietary treatments. Two dietary treatments were established: a IM supplemented with 70 mg kg⁻1 Zn (as oxide), 70 mg kg⁻1 Mn (as oxide), and 8 mg kg⁻1 Cu (as sulfate), and a test diet (IM + AACM) providing the same total elemental concentrations of Zn,

Big Liver and Spleen (BLS) disease in poultry is caused by avian Hepatitis E virus (aHEV) and has been reported in poultry flocks across the world including Australia. BLS was first characterised in Australia in the 1980s but currently the prevalence of aHEV in commercial egg layer flocks is not known. How aHEV effects production performance has also not been investigated. In this study, a cross-sectional epidemiological survey was conducted across several commercial egg producing flocks. Two rearing (5 flocks) and five production farms (19 flocks) were included in the study. Blood samples wer

Avian schistosomatids are blood flukes parasitizing a wide spectrum of aquatic birds. However, its research in the Neotropics is ongoing with several putative new taxa pending description. Although waterfowl represent the most important avian hosts for these flukes, only a small proportion of these birds have been assessed for schistosomatids. This study aimed to describe avian schistosomatids from two native ducks from the Southern Cone of South America. A total of 24 Chiloe wigeon (Mareca sibilatrix) and three Cinnamon teals (Spatula cyanoptera) from different localities in Chile and Argenti

Detailed osteological descriptions of the craniomandibular complex of passerine birds are lacking for most species, limiting our understanding of their diversity and evolution. Cowbirds (genus Molothrus) are a small but widespread group of New World nine-primaried songbirds, well-known for their unique brooding parasitic behavior. However, detailed osteological data for cowbirds and other Icteridae are currently scarce and several features of their skulls remain undescribed or poorly known. To address this issue, a detailed comparative osteology of cowbird skulls is presented here for the firs

An often-overlooked question of the biodiversity crisis is how natural hazards contribute to species extinction risk. To address this issue, we explored how four natural hazards, earthquakes, hurricanes, tsunamis, and volcanoes, overlapped with the distribution ranges of amphibians, birds, mammals, and reptiles that have either narrow distributions or populations with few mature individuals. To assess which species are at risk from these natural hazards, we combined the frequency and magnitude of each natural hazard to estimate their impact. We considered species at risk if they overlapped wit

The present study investigated the prospect of improvement in pharmacokinetic (PK) parameters of marbofloxacin due to alpha-1-monolaurin pre-treatment in broiler chickens. Two groups of broilers were administered a single oral dose of marbofloxacin (5.00 mg kg-1 body weight): Group-I without pre-treatment and Group-II with alpha-1-monolaurin pre-treatment (4.00 g kg-1 feed for 10 days). Blood sampling was done periodically for both groups and plasma marbofloxacin concentrations were determined using ultra-high performance liquid chromatography. Pharmacokinetic parameters using non-compartmenta

Air-breathing vertebrates exhibit cardiovascular responses to diving including heart rate reduction (diving bradycardia). Field studies on aquatic mammals and birds have shown that the intensity of bradycardia can vary depending on diving behaviour, such as the depth of dives and dive duration. However, in aquatic reptiles, the variation in heart rate during deep dives under natural conditions has not been fully investigated. In this study, we released five loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta) outfitted with recorders into the sea and recorded their electrocardiogram, depth, water temperat

BACKGROUND: Biodiversity has been recognized as a positive contributor to human health and wellbeing. Cardiovascular disease and cancer are the two most significant global health burdens, and understanding their relationship with biodiversity forms an essential step toward promoting biodiversity conservation and human health.
METHODS: The species richness of birds is a common indicator of biodiversity, given their vast numbers, distinctive distribution, and acute sensitivity to environmental disturbances. This ecological study utilized avian observation data derived from the eBird database, h
