Effects of lesioning of the substantia innominata on autoregulation of local cerebral blood flow in rats.

Recently, accumulated data have suggested that the nucleus basalis magnocellularis, i.e., the substantia innominata (SI), may represent the primary source of central cholinergic innervation in the rat cortical vasculature. We therefore examined the effects of unilateral lesion of the SI on the autoregulation of local CBF (lCBF) during induced hypotension in rats. Male Wistar rats were divided into three groups. The animals of groups 1 and 2 received an injection of 5 micrograms of ibotenate into the right SI stereotaxically. At 7 days after the injection, the lCBF was measured by the [14C]iodo

The role of oxygen-derived free radicals in ischemia-induced increases in canine skeletal muscle vascular permeability.

Previous studies indicate that vascular permeability is increased in skeletal muscle subjected to 4 hours of inflow occlusion. However, the mechanism(s) underlying the increase in permeability are unknown. The aim of this study was to assess the role of oxygen-derived free radicals and histamine as putative mediators of the increased permeability in skeletal muscle subjected to 4 hours of inflow occlusion. The osmotic reflection coefficient for total plasma proteins and isogravimetric capillary pressure were estimated in canine gracilis muscle for the following conditions: control, ischemia, a

Histamine H1- and H2-receptors in canine renal artery in vivo and in vitro.

The present work investigates (a) the modification by pretreatment with selective H1- and H2-receptor antagonists on the dose-response curves (DRC) to histamine for heart rate, blood pressure, renal arterial blood flow and renal vascular resistance in anesthetized dogs, and (b) the characteristics of the DRC to histamine in canine isolated renal artery. In vivo, pretreatment with metiamide (10 mg/kg i.v.) did not modify the DRC to histamine. In contrast, significant rightward shift of the DRC to histamine for all the hemodynamic parameters was observed after diphenhydramine (5 mg/kg i.v.). Com

Decreased renal cortical perfusion, independent of changes in renal blood flow and sublingual microcirculatory impairment, is associated with the severity of acute kidney injury in patients with septic shock.

BACKGROUND: Reduced renal perfusion has been implicated in the development of septic AKI. However, the relative contributions of macro- and microcirculatory blood flow and the extent to which impaired perfusion is an intrinsic renal phenomenon or part of a wider systemic shock state remains unclear. METHODS: Single-centre prospective longitudinal observational study was carried out. Assessments were made at Day 0, 1, 2 and 4 after ICU admission of renal cortical perfusion in 50 patients with septic shock and ten healthy volunteers using contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS). Contemporaneous mea

Aortic arch surgery: pros and cons of selective cerebral perfusion. A multivariable analysis for cerebral injury during hypothermic circulatory arrest.

Thirty-five consecutive patients with aortic arch aneurysm who required surgical reconstruction were operated on with the aid of extracorporeal circulation between February 1985 and December 1993. Nineteen patients (54.3%) were treated with hypothermic circulatory arrest (HCA) (Group A) and 16 (45.7%) (Group B) with HCA and selective cerebral perfusion (SCP) through the carotid arteries. Preoperative characteristics didn't show any significant differences between the two groups: mean age was 58.7 +/- 12 vs 62.1 +/- 7, p = ns, male sex 73.6% vs 75%, p = ns; atherosclerotic aneurysms were 57.8%

Pedal cadence differentially impacts cerebral blood flow but not a postexercise executive function benefit: evidence from active and passive exercise.

An exercise-induced increase in cerebral blood flow (CBF) serves as a candidate mechanism underlying a postexercise executive function (EF) benefit. Here, healthy young adults completed four 20-min interventions of active and passive (via mechanical flywheel) cycle ergometry at pedal cadences of 55 and 85 revolutions per minute (rpm). Active and passive exercise were used because each modality increases CBF-albeit via distinct mechanisms-and different pedal cadences were used because an increase in passive exercise cadence is thought to increase CBF. Hence, we sought to determine whether the m

Microcirculatory effects of heparin: Evidence for endothelial glycocalyx degradation in children and young adults.

AIMS: Heparin, a widely used anticoagulant in acute care, is known to interact with and modulate the endothelial glycocalyx (EG). This interference becomes particularly relevant in conditions such as sepsis, where microvascular dysfunction and endothelial degradation contribute substantially to organ failure. However, the immediate effects of heparin on microcirculatory parameters in humans remains insufficiently characterized. This study investigates the acute effects of heparin on microcirculation and EG integrity in-vivo using darkfield microscopic imaging. METHOD: This pre-postinterventio

Longitudinal Analysis of Location- and Growth-Associated Hemodynamics in Matched Paraclinoid Aneurysms.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Predicting intracranial aneurysm growth remains difficult, with relatively few widely accepted predictors beyond aneurysm size, location, and patient age. This study investigated the relationship of vascular morphology and hemodynamics to aneurysm location and growth using a matched pairs study design that limited the influence of other predictors. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Longitudinally followed ICA aneurysms identified as growing or stable were matched by size and location, based on their proximity to either the ophthalmic arteries, superior hypophyseal arteries, or po

Impact of sex-specific thresholds for low flow in assessment of prognosis in concordantly and discordantly graded aortic valve stenosis.

AIMS: Sex-specific low flow was recently defined as stroke volume index (SVi) ≤ 40 mL/m² in men and ≤32 mL/m² in women. We tested the prognostic association of these cut-offs in patients with aortic stenosis (AS) with concordantly and discordantly graded AS [concordantly graded AS by energy loss (CGASEL) and discordantly graded AS by energy loss (DGASEL)] based on pressure recovery adjusted aortic valve area [energy loss (EL)]. METHODS AND RESULTS: Data from 1351 patients with asymptomatic AS, peak jet velocity <4 m/s, and preserved left ventricular ejection fraction enrolled in the Simvastat

Aspirin Improves Uterine Artery Function in Hypercholesterolemic Preeclampsia.

BACKGROUND: Excessive hypercholesterolemia in pregnancy increases the risk of preeclampsia (HC-PE), though the mechanisms remain unclear. We recently showed that uterine artery function is impaired in HC-PE pregnancies via activation of the TLR4 (toll-like receptor 4)/PGHS1 (prostaglandin H synthase 1) pathway. Low-dose aspirin lowers preeclampsia risk in high-risk pregnancies by inhibiting PGHS1, but its effects in HC-PE pregnancies are not known. Moreover, oxidized low-density lipoprotein (oxLDL) levels rise in HC-PE, potentially activating TLR4 and LOX-1 (lectin-like oxLDL receptor-1; scave

Rule-out and rule-in of carotid near-occlusion using color duplex ultrasound.

PURPOSE: Diagnosing carotid near-occlusion (CNO) with colour duplex ultrasound (CDU) is challenging. We hypothesised that CNO is associated with a reduced distal internal carotid artery (ICA) velocity and aimed to assess if distal velocity is able to diagnose CNO accurately. If not, we aimed to develop CDU rule-out and rule-in criteria to diagnose CNO. METHODS: This is a prospective cross-sectional study in consecutive participants with suspected ≥ 50% carotid stenosis on CT angiography (CTA). CDU velocities in the common carotid artery, the stenosis and distal to the stenosis were examined.

Flow-Rate-Constrained Physics-Informed Neural Networks for Flow Field Error Correction in 4-D Flow Magnetic Resonance Imaging.

In this study, we present enhanced physics-informed neural networks (PINNs), which were designed to address flow field errors in four-dimensional flow magnetic resonance imaging (4D Flow MRI). Flow field errors, typically occurring in high-velocity regions, lead to inaccuracies in velocity fields and flow rate underestimation. We proposed incorporating flow rate constraints to ensure physical consistency across cross-sections. The proposed framework included optimization strategies to improve convergence, stability, and accuracy. Artificial viscosity modeling, projecting conflicting gradients

Data-based modeling of cerebral hemodynamics quantifies impairment of cerebral blood flow regulation in type-2 diabetes.

We studied the regulation dynamics of cerebral blood velocity (CBv) at middle cerebral arteries (MCA) in response to spontaneous changes of arterial blood pressure (ABP), termed dynamic cerebral autoregulation (dCA), and end-tidal CO2 as proxy for blood CO2 tension, termed dynamic vasomotor reactivity (DVR), by analyzing time-series data collected at supine rest from 36 patients with Type-2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) and 22 age/sex-matched non-diabetic controls without arterial hypertension. Our analysis employed a robust dynamic modeling methodology that utilizes Principal Dynamic Modes (PDM) t
