Trends in the prevalence of obesity among U.S. active component service members and civilians, 2013-2023.

Trends in obesity among U.S. active component service members (ACSMs) and civilians are relevant to military recruitment and retention, as excess body weight is a common disqualification for military service. This study utilized measured height and weight data from the Military Health System Data Repository for ACSMs (cumulative n=12,262,745) and the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey for civilians ages 17-62 years (cumulative n=19,334). Accounting for the design of each data source, the prevalence of obesity (body mass index≥30 kg/m2) and body mass index (BMI) distributions were

Early hormonal responses of irisin and nesfatin-1 following sleeve gastrectomy in women with obesity: A preliminary study.

Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) is an effective surgical intervention for morbid obesity, yet early hormonal changes contributing to metabolic adaptation remain underexplored. The objective of this study was to evaluate the early postoperative changes in the energy-regulating hormones irisin and nesfatin-1 following LSG in obese female patients. These hormones were selected due to their established roles in metabolic regulation and appetite control. This preliminary study included 27 women with obesity (body mass index, BMI>40 kg/m² or>35 kg/m² with comorbidities) undergoing LSG. Serum i

Amplified stigma: a conceptual synthesis of embodied intersections of menstruation and homelessness in Western urban contexts.

Menstruation and homelessness are each highly stigmatised experiences, yet their intersection remains critically understudied. This paper introduces the concept of amplified stigma to describe the compounded psychosocial, material and structural harms faced by individuals who menstruate without stable housing in high-income Western cities. Drawing from a conceptual synthesis of over 70 interdisciplinary sources, including public health, feminist theory, medical sociology, anthropology and gender studies, we employ three core analytical frameworks: embodiment, objectification and intersectional

Nutrition-First Support for GLP-1 and Dual Incretin Therapy in Obesity: A Practical Framework for Dietary Management, Symptom Tolerability, and Long-Term Weight Maintenance.

BACKGROUND: Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs) and dual glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP)/GLP-1 receptor agonists have transformed obesity treatment, producing substantial weight loss during active therapy. However, real-world effectiveness may be limited by gastrointestinal adverse events, reduced dietary intake, fat-free mass loss as part of total weight reduction, and weight regain after discontinuation. METHODS: This narrative review synthesizes current pharmacological, nutritional, gastrointestinal, body-composition, and implementation evidence to propo

VR Nature Therapy: Embodiment and Emotional Regulation through Immersive Virtual Environments.

Virtual reality (VR) nature therapies show promise for emotion regulation, but optimal combinations of settings remain unclear. This within-subjects study examined how cultural familiarity (Hong Kong marine vs. German forest sceneries) and interaction mode (sitting vs. standing) affect mood, embodiment, nature connectedness, and VR presence in 31 participants (mean age 22.5 years, SD 2.1; 18 female, 13 male; no prior VR experience reported by 74%). Using immersive 360-degree VR natural sceneries, we assessed outcomes via standardized scales before and after exposure. Results revealed significa

A novel extracellular vesicle isolation method based on cellulose nanofiber sheets.

Extracellular vesicles (EVs) circulate in body fluids, carrying molecular cargo from their parent cells and exerting diverse biological functions. Consequently, they have attracted considerable attention as biomarkers for disease detection and pathophysiological understanding and have emerged as potential therapeutic targets. Although the number of clinical trials involving EVs is increasing, major challenges remain, including methodological transparency and the heterogeneity of EV subpopulations. Various EV isolation methods are commonly employed, and the primary approaches are summarized in

Ballistic head and neck injuries: management rationale and outcomes in a case series.

INTRODUCTION: Penetrating head and neck injuries with retained foreign bodies pose significant management challenges due to the anatomical density of vital structures. The optimal therapeutic strategy - ranging from surgical extraction to conservative observation - remains guided by individual patient and injury characteristics. METHODS: This case series retrospectively reviews four distinct presentations of retained metallic foreign bodies in the head and neck region. Diagnostic evaluation utilized advanced computed tomography (CT) for precise localization. Management strategies were individ

Dietary Protein Imbalance Impairs Sperm Morphology and Promotes Testicular Degeneration in Rams.

Reproductive efficiency is a primary determinant of profitability in ruminant production, with male fertility being a critical factor for genetic progress and herd productivity. While nutritional management is a central component in modulating reproductive capacity, the effects of excessive dietary protein on testicular function remain incompletely elucidated. This study evaluated the impact of different dietary crude protein (CP) levels on reproductive and metabolic parameters in rams. Twenty-eight Santa Inês rams were randomly assigned to four groups (n = 7) and fed for 120 days with isoener

Histo-anatomical atlas of Garra rufa and its thermal tolerance at human body temperature.

Garra rufa, the doctor fish, is a small freshwater cyprinid notable for its exceptional tolerance to high temperatures, surviving at the human body temperature of 37 °C, and has emerging potential as a novel laboratory model for human cancer xenotransplantation and infectious disease research. To establish a foundation for its experimental use, we conducted comprehensive histo-anatomical analyses across major organ systems. The overall body organization and tissue architecture of G. rufa are broadly similar to those of zebrafish (Danio rerio), indicating a conserved cyprinid body plan. However

When Size Matters: Surgical Challenges of Giant Rectal Foreign Bodies.

Rectal foreign bodies are an uncommon but increasingly recognized presentation in emergency colorectal surgery. Object size - particularly transverse diameter - and rural, low-resource settings add complexity to both diagnosis and treatment. A 57-year-old man from a rural area of southern Colombia was referred to a regional hospital for a retained lithic rectal foreign body (a stone). Plain abdominal radiography showed a cone-shaped radiopaque object. After multiple failed transanal extraction attempts, exploratory laparotomy was performed. A conical stone approximately 15 cm in diameter at it

Fasting glucose improvement following a short-term, culturally adapted lifestyle intervention in Latino adults at risk for type 2 diabetes mellitus: a quasi-experimental study.

BACKGROUND: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2D) is an increasingly pressing public health concern in Latin America. Lifestyle modification strategies, such as the Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) have demonstrated significant benefits in reducing diabetes risk. However, limited evidence exists regarding their effectiveness in Latino communities, particularly when implemented in culturally tailored formats. METHODS: This quasi-experimental study was conducted in Loja, Ecuador, from November 2023 to February 2024. A total of 126 adults aged 18 to 75 years with a FINDRISC score of 12 or higher parti

Biomonitoring arsenic exposure by ancestry: the healthy life in an urban setting (HELIUS) study.

Policymakers in Europe utilize biomonitoring to regulate exposure to arsenic and protect public health, but potentially high exposure levels among ancestral subgroups remain understudied. We assessed arsenic exposure in a random population sample of Amsterdam, the Netherlands, stratified by European-Dutch vs Asian and African-Dutch ancestry (n = 60, 30 women, aged 40-63 years). We analyzed total spot urinary arsenic with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry and used food frequency questionnaires to calculate the exposure to inorganic arsenic (reference point <0.8 nmol/kg body mass/day)

Do Weight Suppression and Body Mass Index Predict Daily Body Image and Eating Urges in Non-Clinical Adults?

INTRODUCTION: The current study used ecological momentary assessment (EMA) to examine whether body mass index (BMI) and weight suppression (highest minus current weight) predicted momentary body dissatisfaction and disordered eating urges, including dietary restriction, excessive exercise, binge eating, and unhealthy eating, and whether trait eating disorder (ED) symptoms moderated these associations. METHOD: Data were collected from 686 adults (75% female), comprising community participants and undergraduate students, through six daily EMA surveys over seven days (42 possible assessments).

Textiloma: surgical and forensic implications of medical negligence. A case report and literature review.

A textiloma or gossypiboma is a rare but serious iatrogenic complication, caused by the retention of surgical sponges or gauze within the body after surgery. Often underreported, it may remain undetected for years, leading to diagnostic challenges with significant clinical and medicolegal implications. Our study reviewed the clinical and legal aspects of textilomas. We conducted a review by searching the terms "textiloma" and "post-surgery" in a single database (PubMed) from 2014 to 2024. After excluding non-iatrogenic cases and article with no forensic or surgical interest, 25 relevant articl

Modelling the effects of elevated methylglyoxal levels on vascular and metabolic complications.

Methylglyoxal (MGO), a glycolysis by-product and precursor to advanced glycation endproducts (AGEs), is associated with glucose intolerance, type 2 diabetes, and vascular dysfunction. This study examined the long-term effects of elevated MGO on blood pressure, insulin sensitivity, and vascular function in healthy mice. Male C57Bl/6J mice were assigned to control (n = 16) or MGO-treated groups (50 mM in drinking water for 13 weeks, n = 16). Measurements included body weight, fasting plasma glucose, water consumption, blood pressure, and analysis of plasma/tissue for MGO, AGEs, glyoxalase activi
