PURPOSE: While imaging matrix-associated stem cell transplants aimed for cartilage repair in a rodent arthritis model, we noticed that some transplants formed locally destructive tumors. The purpose of this study was to determine the cause for this tumor formation in order to avoid this complication for future transplants.

Myelodysplastic syndrome with severe thrombocytopenia is a rare disease in women of child-bearing age. The challenging aspect in management of such a patient is maintaining optimal coagulation with minimum platelet transfusion during the peripartum period. Multiple transfusions can result in allo-sensitization which can affect lifesaving bone marrow transplantation in future. Thromboelastography is a useful tool to assess and guide appropriate transfusion requirements.

We present a rare case of calcinosis cutis associated with chronic sclerodermoid graft versus host disease in a 59-year-old male, 13 years following allogenic bone marrow transplantation. The etiology of calcification was thought to be dystrophic. Further research is needed to understand the link between calcinosis cutis and chronic sclerodermoid graft versus host disease to assist with selecting appropriate management for these patients.

Osteochondritis dissecans (OCD) of the femoral head is an unusual cause of hip pain. It can be associated with other intra-articular pathologies including: acetabular labral tears or bone deformities such as Legg-Calve-Perthes Disease (LCPD). In this article, we propose a modern surgical technique using an arthroscopic antegrade and retrograde osteochondral autologous transplantation (OAT) procedure for assessing and treating OCD lesions of the femoral head.

Chediak-Higashi syndrome is characterized by varying degrees of oculocutaneous albinism, recurrent infections, bleeding disorders and variable neurological involvement. The treatment consists of bone marrow transplantation, which corrects the immunologic and hematologic defects. Untreated patients die as the result of bacterial infections or develop "accelerated phase" lymphoproliferation. We present a case of Chediak-Higashi syndrome and discuss the clinical and laboratorial features that determine its diagnosis.

Superficial mucoceles are subepithelial extravasations of sialomucin that occur at the epithelial-connective tissue interface and are directly related to minor salivary glands. They have been described in association with oral lichen planus and, exceptionally, with chronic graft versus host disease. Three patients who underwent an allogeneic bone marrow transplantation for a chronic myelogenous leukaemia presented multiple superficial mucoceles and an oral lichenoid graft versus host disease.

Acral erythema (AE) is a painful, erythematous bullous eruption of the palms and soles which is chemotherapy-induced. To the numerous chemotherapies which induce AE we must add, perhaps, a new drug, Vépéside. AE is followed by graft-versus-host-disease in all patients receiving bone marrow transplantation. AE and early GVH disease being very similar, we discuss the differential diagnosis which can be very difficult.

Rabbits given acute serum sickness (ASS) and treated with Cyclosporin A (CyA) developed glomerular capillary thrombosis and cortical infarction. These lesions were associated with severe endothelial injury and platelet-fibrin-leucocyte thrombi. They were not seen in untreated rabbits with ASS, nor in normal rabbits given CyA alone in equivalent doses. A similar renal lesion has been reported in patients receiving CyA following bone marrow transplantation.

Serial histological studies in patients after successful renal transplantation indicate that with restoration of adequate renal function osteomalacia invariably improves with symptomatic relief in bone pain. Histological changes of osteitis fibrosa resolve more slowly and radiological changes may persist longer, occasionally in the absence of confirmatory histological evidence of secondary hyperparathyroidism. For accurate and sensitive follow-up a combination of biochemistry, histology and radiology is desirable.
