Efficacy of gamma knife radiosurgery for cerebral cavernous malformations - A single-institution retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Cerebral cavernous malformations (CCMs) are low-flow vascular malformations of the central nervous system. Although surgical resection is the primary treatment for symptomatic CCMs, gamma knife radiosurgery (GKRS) has been considered as an alternative treatment for CCMs with high surgical risk. This study aims to evaluate outcomes of GKRS in the treatment of CCMs. METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted on 235 patients diagnosed with CCMs who underwent GKRS at Cho Ray Hospital between October 2016 and September 2022. We assessed the annual hemorrhage rate (AHR) after GKRS, se

Long-term surveillance in an infant with spontaneous obliteration of pial arteriovenous malformation and large intranidal aneurysm: A unique case observation.

BACKGROUND: Spontaneous obliteration of untreated cerebral arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) is rare, occurring in <1% of cases, and is even less common in pediatric populations. The mechanisms driving spontaneous regression of brain AVMs remain poorly understood, and long-term surveillance in pediatric patients is infrequently documented. CASE DESCRIPTION: The authors reported a remarkably rare instance of spontaneous thrombosis in a pial AVM accompanied by a large intranidal aneurysm in a 10-month-old infant, initially presenting with a nocturnal seizure. Diagnostic imaging revealed a rupt

Facilitation of neurological recovery in a complete spinal cord injury with NeuroAiD: case report.

INTRODUCTION: NeuroAiD (MLC601 & MLC901)'s neuroprotective capabilities include limiting exaggerated calcium influx, decreasing excitotoxicity, reducing oxidative stress, and preventing glutamate-induced cell death. It has also been shown to facilitate synaptogenesis, neurogenesis, and neuroplasticity. However, its clinical efficacy has primarily been studied in the context of brain injuries, particularly stroke. NeuroAiD's potential application in SCI remains largely untapped. CASE PRESENTATION: A 34-year-old male presented with C4 complete tetraplegia. Following surgical decompression and i

Clinicopathological Impact of FOXM1 and MMP-9 Immunohistochemical Expression in Different Grades of Intracranial Meningioma.

OBJECTIVES: To find predictive biomarkers for recurrence and progression of meningioma. BACKGROUND: Despite great advances in meningioma treatment, the prognosis remained unfavorable due to the high recurrence rate. METHODS: In this study, we evaluated the immunohistochemical expression of FOXM1, MMP-9, and Ki67 in 50 cases of intracranial meningioma to detect its potential role in meningioma progression, recurrence, and patients' survival. RESULTS: Strong FOXM1 expression was detected in 20% of the cases and was significantly associated with meningioma grade ( P = 0.002) and peritumoral br

First report of Trypanosoma cruzi infection in urban hedgehog (Atelerix albiventris) in Colombia.

Chagas disease (CD) is a zoonotic infection caused by the protozoan parasite Trypanosoma cruzi, affecting over seven million people worldwide. T. cruzi can infect more than 100 species of wild mammals, including opossums, armadillos, bats, carnivores, rodents, and primates, as well as domestic animals like dogs, cats, and exotic pets. This is the first report of T. cruzi infection in an "exotic pet" African hedgehog (Atelerix albiventris), in an endemic area for CD in Colombia. After the patient underwent euthanasia due to worsening clinical signs including diarrhea, thrombocytopenia, leukopen

Nrdp1-mediated Macrophage Phenotypic Regulation Promotes Functional Recovery in Mice with Mild Neurological Impairment after Intracerebral Hemorrhage.

Neuregulin receptor degradation protein 1 (Nrdp1) is a ring finger E3 ubiquitin ligase involved in some inflammation through ubiquitination, including macrophage polarization following cerebral hemorrhage. However, there is limited understanding regarding the mechanisms through which Nrdp1 modulates macrophage polarization and the potential impact of this modulation on neurological function. Using stereotactic injection and adenoviral transfection techniques, the corresponding animal models were constructed through injecting adenovirus, saline, or blood into the mouse striatum at different per

TNF-α Receptor Inhibitor Alleviates Metabolic and Inflammatory Changes in a Rat Model of Ischemic Stroke.

Hyperglycemia and inflammation, with their augmented interplay, are involved in cases of stroke with poor outcomes. Interrupting this vicious cycle thus has the potential to prevent stroke disease progression. Tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) is an emerging molecule, which has inflammatory and metabolic roles. Studies have shown that TNF-α receptor inhibitor R-7050 possesses neuroprotective, antihyperglycemic, and anti-inflammatory effects. Using a rat model of permanent cerebral ischemia, pretreatment with R-7050 offered protection against poststroke neurological deficits, brain infarction, ed

A novel indication of platonin, a therapeutic immunomodulating medicine, on neuroprotection against ischemic stroke in mice.

Thrombosis and stroke are major causes of disability and death worldwide. However, the regular antithrombotic drugs may have unsatisfactory results and side effects. Platonin, a cyanine photosensitizing dye, has been used to treat trauma, ulcers and some acute inflammation. Here, we explored the neuroprotective effects of platonin against middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO)-induced ischemic stroke in mice. Platonin(200 μg/kg) substantially reduced cerebral infarct volume, brain edema, neuronal cell death and neurological deficit scores, and improved the MCAO-reduced locomotor activity and

Intrasylvian hematoma caused by ruptured middle cerebral artery aneurysms predicts recovery from poor-grade subarachnoid hemorrhage.

OBJECT: Intrasylvian hematoma (ISH) is a subtype of intracranial hematoma caused by aneurysmal rupture and often presents with a poor initial neurological grade; it is not well studied. The aim of this study was to elucidate outcomes of aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) with ISH. METHODS: Data for 97 patients with poor-grade SAH (World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies Grade IV or V) were retrospectively analyzed from a single-center, prospective, observational cohort database. Ultra-early surgical clipping, removal of hematoma, external decompression for brain swelling, and preven

Pheochromocytoma-Induced Inverted Takotsubo-Like Cardiomyopathy Leading to Cardiogenic Shock Successfully Treated With Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation.

Pheochromocytoma classically displays a variety of rather benign symptoms, such as headache, palpitations, and sweating, although severe cardiac manifestations have been described. We report a case of pheochromocytoma-induced inverted takotsubo-like cardiomyopathy leading to shock and cardiac arrest successfully treated with extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) as a bridge to pharmacological therapy and curative adrenalectomy. A previously healthy 46-year-old woman presented to the emergency department with abdominal pain, dyspnea, nausea, and vomiting. Clinical evaluation revealed cardi

Spectrum of epilepsy in tuberous sclerosis.

Tuberous sclerosis (TS) is an autosomal dominant disease that affects the brain, skin, eye, heart and kidney. The diagnostic criteria for tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) have recently been revised. There are relatively few Indian studies on this disorder. Twenty-six patients diagnosed as having TS over a period of 18 years are being reported. The onset of seizures ranged from infancy to adolescence. The patterns of epilepsy encountered were generalized tonic clonic seizures (13), complex partial seizures (10), simple partial seizures (9) and myoclonic jerks (4) including infantile spasms (3).

Physiological importance of aquaporin water channels.

Aquaporins (AQP) are a family of at least ten homologous water transporting proteins in mammals that are expressed in many epithelial, endothelial and other tissues. Abnormalities in humans and mice lacking AQPs provide direct evidence for their physiological importance. Humans lacking AQP1 or AQP2 manifest polyuria with defective urinary concentrating ability and humans with mutations in MIP (AQP0) develop cataracts. Transgenic knockout mice lacking AQP1 or AQP3 are also remarkably polyuric, and knock-in mice expressing a mutant AQP2 have severe nephrogenic diabetes insipidus resulting in imp
