Early recanalization of occluded vessels in patients with acute ischemic stroke (AIS) by either intravenous thrombolysis (IVT) or endovascular revascularization has been shown to be associated with improved clinical outcomes and reduced mortality. Since the initial report regarding endovascular treatment (EVT) of AIS in 1983, endovascular techniques have been tremendously improved, advancing from intra-arterial administration of thrombolytic drugs to stent retrievers. IVT has been evaluated in several large randomized trials and has been shown to improve clinical outcomes at 90 days if treatme

OBJECTIVE: To investigate mitophagy in an animal model of hypoxic-ischemic brain damage (HIBD) and its role in HIBD.
METHODS: A total of 120 neonatal Sprague-Dawley rats aged 7 days were divided into three groups: sham-operation, HIBD, and autophagy inhibitor intervention (3MA group). The rats in the HIBD group were treated with right common carotid artery ligation and then put in a hypoxic chamber (8% oxygen and 92% nitrogen) for 2.5 hours. Those in the 3MA group were given ligation and hypoxic treatment at 30 minutes after intraperitoneal injection of 2 μL 3MA. Those in the sham-operation g

BACKGROUND: Tau protein is s specific protein expressed by neurons in the central nervous system. Elevated serum Tau protein is associated with many diseases of the central nervous system. The serum Tau protein level in neonates with hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) is still poorly understood.
METHODS: Forty-one human neonates with HIE and thirty-five healthy neonates (control group) within 24 hours after birth were studied. Tau protein in serum was detected by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Neurological outcome was assessed at 9 months of age according to the Gesell developmental sc

Data on the incidence of hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) in the first 6 hours of life together with the implementation of therapeutic hypothermia (TH) are relevant to delineate actions to achieve the lowest rates of neonatal mortality, morbidity, and long-term impact on health associated with HIE. This is population-based national survey study, including newborns ≥35 weeks of gestation with moderate-to-severe HIE from all level III neonatal care units, to provide the incidence of HIE for the period 2012-2013, and the implementation of TH up to June 2015 in Spain. Incidence rate was 0.77

Degenerative cervical myelopathy is a common neurologic condition induced by compression of the spinal cord due to degenerative changes of the cervical spine. It is one of the leading causes of acquired disability in adults and manifests as a slow deterioration of the symptoms in a majority of the patients. A variety of nonsurgical and surgical treatments have been performed to ameliorate or halt the symptoms, and a number of articles describe their methods, efficacy, and complications. In this article, the pathogenesis, prevention, and management of the neurologic complications are reviewed.

Stem-cell based therapy is an emerging therapeutic approach for ischemic stroke treatment. Bone marrow stromal cells (BMSCs) are in common use as a cell source for stem cell therapy and show promising therapeutic outcomes for stroke treatment. One challenge is to develop a reliable tracking strategy to monitor the fate of BMSCs and assess their therapeutic effects in order to improve the success rate of such treatment. Herein, TPEEP, a fluorogen with aggregation-induced emission characteristics and near-infrared emission are designed and synthesized and further fabricated into organic nanopart

Cyclin-dependent kinase 5 (CDK5) is a proline-directed serine/threonine kinase belonging to the family of cyclin-dependent kinases. In addition to maintaining the neuronal architecture, CDK5 plays an important role in the regulation of synaptic plasticity, neurotransmitter release, neuron migration and neurite outgrowth. Although various reports have shown links between neurodegeneration and deregulation of cyclin-dependent kinases, the specific role of CDK5 inhibition in causing neuroprotection in cases of neuronal insult or in neurodegenerative diseases is not wellunderstood. Hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) in neonates is the brain injury caused by perinatal asphyxia or hypoxia and is a major cause of death in neonates and nervous system dysfunction in infants and young children. Although to a certain degree, mild hypothermia therapy reduces the mortality of infants with moderate to severe HIE, it cannot achieve the expected improvements in nervous system dysfunction. Hence, it is of vital importance to search for effective therapeutic methods for HIE. The search for more therapies and better preventive measures based on the pathogenesis of HIE has resulted i

Fabry disease can cause various neurological manifestations. We describe the case of a Japanese woman with Fabry disease who presented with ischemic stroke, aseptic meningitis, and psychiatric symptoms. The patient had a mutation in intron 4 of her α-galactosidase A gene, which was not detected in her family. This case suggests that Fabry disease should be considered in young patients who exhibit central nervous system symptoms such as ischemic stroke, even if there is no family history of the condition. The episodes of aseptic meningitis and stroke experienced by our patient suggest that pers

BACKGROUND: Autologous bone marrow stromal cells (BM-SCs) transplantation might be a potential therapy for stroke. Although a series of clinical trials were performed to assess the effectiveness and safety of BM-SCs transplantation after ischemic stroke, the results are still conflicting. This study aimed to pool previous controlled trials to assess the effectiveness of BM-SCs-based cell therapy after ischemic stroke.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Relevant studies were searched among online databases. Barthel index (BI) or modified Barthel index (mBI), National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHS

OBJECTIVES: This study examines whether low or high blood hemoglobin concentration (HGB) is associated with stroke severity, worse clinical outcomes, and poorer prognosis after acute ischemic stroke (AIS).
METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included data from the Ontario Stroke Registry on consecutive patients with AIS who were admitted between July 2003 and March 2008. We excluded patients taking anticonvulsants or iron supplement; patients with cancer, renal failure, history of gastro-intestinal or genitourinary bleeding, and pregnancy. Patients were divided into groups as follows: lo

Neonatal hypoxic-ischemic (HI) injury still remains an important issue as it is a frequent cause of neonatal death and life-long neurobehavioral and cognitive dysfunction. In spite of the decades of research which led us to a better knowledge of the pathological mechanism of hypoxic-ischemic brain injury, the clinical use of potential neuroprotective drugs (including, among others, excitatory amino acids antagonists, free radical inhibitors and scavengers, growth factors, xenon, cannabinoids, anti-inflammatory and anti-apoptotic agents) became avoided owing to insufficiency and /or treatment-i

We illustrate a unique case of neonatal organ donation in a full-term newborn with severe hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) and multi-organ dysfunction that underwent therapeutic hypothermia. Prolonged hypothermia permitted adequate time for recovery of certain end-organs before such time that death by neurologic criteria was declared. Parental values aligned with the opportunity for organ donation.

Stroke is an abrupt onset of both focal and global neurological deficits secondary to a vascular event lasting more than 24 h and with a vascular background as its only cause. It can be triggered by a rupture of a blood vessel, aneurysm (hemorrhagic stroke, HS), thrombosis or embolisms (ischemic stroke, IS). In developed countries, it is the third most common cause of death in the adult population. Stroke in children is a rare disorder with a reported frequency of about 3 cases per 100,000 children per year. The history of acute brain ischemia is burdened with neurological complications such a

We herein report two cases of acute ischemic stroke associated with iron deficiency anemia (IDA) due to bleeding from uterine fibroids. Anemia is not generally recognized as a risk factor for stroke. The physiological mechanisms that may factor in the development of ischemic stroke in patients with IDA include thrombocytosis, hypercoagulable state, and anemic hypoxia. In our two cases, IDA was considered to be the cause of ischemic stroke because all other known causes of stroke were ruled out. In patients with ischemic stroke due to anemia, early treatment of the anemia is important to preven
