Multiple cortical visual streams in humans.

The effective connectivity between 55 visual cortical regions and 360 cortical regions was measured in 171 HCP participants using the HCP-MMP atlas, and complemented with functional connectivity and diffusion tractography. A Ventrolateral Visual "What" Stream for object and face recognition projects hierarchically to the inferior temporal visual cortex, which projects to the orbitofrontal cortex for reward value and emotion, and to the hippocampal memory system. A Ventromedial Visual "Where" Stream for scene representations connects to the parahippocampal gyrus and hippocampus. An Inferior STS

Categorical encoding of moving colors during location tracking.

Categorical perception (CP) describes our tendency to perceive the visual world in a categorical manner, suggesting that high-level cognition may affect perception. While most studies are conducted in static visual scenes, Sun and colleagues found CP effects of color in multiple object tracking (MOT). This study used functional magnetic resonance imaging to investigate the neural mechanism behind the categorical effects of color in MOT. Categorical effects were associated with activities in a broad range of brain regions, including both the ventral (V4, middle temporal gyrus) and dorsal pathwa

Causal evidence for a coordinated temporal interplay within the language network.

Recent neurobiological models on language suggest that auditory sentence comprehension is supported by a coordinated temporal interplay within a left-dominant brain network, including the posterior inferior frontal gyrus (pIFG), posterior superior temporal gyrus and sulcus (pSTG/STS), and angular gyrus (AG). Here, we probed the timing and causal relevance of the interplay between these regions by means of concurrent transcranial magnetic stimulation and electroencephalography (TMS-EEG). Our TMS-EEG experiments reveal region- and time-specific causal evidence for a bidirectional information flo

Mechanisms of imbalanced frontostriatal functional connectivity in obsessive-compulsive disorder.

The diagnosis of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) has been linked with changes in frontostriatal resting-state connectivity. However, replication of prior findings is lacking, and the mechanistic understanding of these effects is incomplete. To confirm and advance knowledge on changes in frontostriatal functional connectivity in OCD, participants with OCD and matched healthy controls underwent resting-state functional, structural and diffusion neuroimaging. Functional connectivity changes in frontostriatal systems were here replicated in individuals with OCD (n = 52) compared with controls

Dorsal Striatal Functional Connectivity and Repetitive Behavior Dimensions in Children and Youths With Neurodevelopmental Disorders.

BACKGROUND: Impairing repetitive behaviors are one of the core diagnostic symptoms in autism spectrum disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder, but they also manifest in attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder. Although the dorsal striatal circuit has been implicated in repetitive behaviors, extensive heterogeneity in and cross-diagnostic manifestations of these behaviors have suggested phenotypic and likely neurobiological heterogeneity across neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs). METHODS: Intrinsic dorsal striatal functional connectivity was examined in 3 NDDs (autism spectrum disorder, o

Cortical surface plasticity promotes map remodeling and alleviates tinnitus in adult mice.

Tinnitus induced by hearing loss is caused primarily by irreversible damage to the peripheral auditory system, which results in abnormal neural responses and frequency map disruption in the central auditory system. It remains unclear whether and how electrical rehabilitation of the auditory cortex can alleviate tinnitus. We hypothesize that stimulation of the cortical surface can alleviate tinnitus by enhancing neural responses and promoting frequency map reorganization. To test this hypothesis, we assessed and activated cortical maps using our newly designed graphene-based electrode array wit

Decreased functional connectivity in salience network is associated with symptom severity in betel quid-dependent chewers.

BACKGROUND: Betel quid (BQ) is the fourth most popular psychoactive agent worldwide. Neuroimaging studies have showed that substance-addicted individuals including alcohol, heroin, nicotine and other addictive substance exhibit altered activity patterns of the salience network (SN). However, no study has yet investigated the neural correlates of the resting-state SN and BQ dependence (BQD)-related physiopathological characteristics. METHODS: Thirty-two BQ-dependent (BQD) chewers and 32 healthy controls were recruited to participate in this study. Resting-state functional magnetic resonance im

Preferential signal pathways during the perception and imagery of familiar scenes: An effective connectivity study.

The perception and imagery of landmarks activate similar content-dependent brain areas, including occipital and temporo-medial brain regions. However, how these areas interact during visual perception and imagery of scenes, especially when recollecting their spatial location, remains unknown. Here, we combined functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), resting-state functional connectivity (rs-fc), and effective connectivity to assess spontaneous fluctuations and task-induced modulation of signals among regions entailing scene-processing, the primary visual area and the hippocampus (HC), re

The human middle temporal cortex responds to both active leg movements and egomotion-compatible visual motion.

The human middle-temporal region MT+ is highly specialized in processing visual motion. However, recent studies have shown that this region is modulated by extraretinal signals, suggesting a possible involvement in processing motion information also from non-visual modalities. Here, we used functional MRI data to investigate the influence of retinal and extraretinal signals on MT+ in a large sample of subjects. Moreover, we used resting-state functional MRI to assess how the subdivisions of MT+ (i.e., MST, FST, MT, and V4t) are functionally connected. We first compared responses in MST, FST, M

Keep the head in the right place: Face-body interactions in inferior temporal cortex.

In primates, faces and bodies activate distinct regions in the inferior temporal (IT) cortex and are typically studied separately. Yet, primates interact with whole agents and not with random concatenations of faces and bodies. Despite its social importance, it is still poorly understood how faces and bodies interact in IT. Here, we addressed this gap by measuring fMRI activations to whole agents and to unnatural face-body configurations in which the head was mislocated with respect to the body, and examined how these relate to the sum of the activations to their corresponding faces and bodies

Frontal language areas do not emerge in the absence of temporal language areas: A case study of an individual born without a left temporal lobe.

Language processing relies on a left-lateralized fronto-temporal brain network. How this network emerges ontogenetically remains debated. We asked whether frontal language areas emerge in the absence of temporal language areas through a 'deep-data' investigation of an individual (EG) born without her left temporal lobe. Using fMRI methods that have been validated to elicit reliable individual-level responses, we find that-as expected for early left-hemisphere damage-EG has a fully functional language network in her right hemisphere (comparable to the LH network in n = 145 controls) and intact

Language network self-inhibition and semantic similarity in first-episode schizophrenia: A computational-linguistic and effective connectivity approach.

INTRODUCTION: A central feature of schizophrenia is the disorganization and impoverishment of language. Recently, we observed higher semantic similarity in first-episode-schizophrenia (FES) patients. In this study, we investigate if this aberrant similarity relates to the 'causal' connectivity between two key nodes of the word production system: inferior frontal gyrus (IFG) and the semantic-hub at the ventral anterior temporal lobe (vATL). METHODS: Resting-state fMRI scans were collected from 60 participants (30 untreated FES and 30 healthy controls). The semantic distance was measured with t

Frontoparietal Anatomical Connectivity Predicts Second Language Learning Success.

There is considerable individual variability in second language (L2) learning abilities in adulthood. The inferior parietal lobule, important in L2 learning success, is anatomically connected to language areas in the frontal lobe via the superior longitudinal fasciculus (SLF). The second and third branches of the SLF (SLF II and III) have not been examined separately in the context of language, yet they are known to have dissociable frontoparietal connections. Studying these pathways and their functional contributions to L2 learning is thus of great interest. Using diffusion MRI tractography,

Arithmetic learning in children: An fMRI training study.

Arithmetic learning is characterized by a change from procedural strategies to fact retrieval. fMRI training studies in adults have revealed that this change coincides with decreased activation in the prefrontal cortex (PFC) and that within the parietal lobe, a shift occurs from the intraparietal sulcus (IPS) to the angular gyrus (AG). It remains to be determined whether similar changes can be observed in children, particularly because children often recruit the hippocampus (HC) during arithmetic fact retrieval, an observation that has not been consistently found in adults. In order to experim

Direct intracranial recordings in the human angular gyrus during arithmetic processing.

The role of angular gyrus (AG) in arithmetic processing remains a subject of debate. In the present study, we recorded from the AG, supramarginal gyrus (SMG), intraparietal sulcus (IPS), and superior parietal lobule (SPL) across 467 sites in 30 subjects performing addition or multiplication with digits or number words. We measured the power of high-frequency-broadband (HFB) signal, a surrogate marker for regional cortical engagement, and used single-subject anatomical boundaries to define the location of each recording site. Our recordings revealed the lowest proportion of sites with activatio

Predicting Identity-Preserving Object Transformations in Human Posterior Parietal Cortex and Convolutional Neural Networks.

Previous research shows that, within human occipito-temporal cortex (OTC), we can use a general linear mapping function to link visual object responses across nonidentity feature changes, including Euclidean features (e.g., position and size) and non-Euclidean features (e.g., image statistics and spatial frequency). Although the learned mapping is capable of predicting responses of objects not included in training, these predictions are better for categories included than those not included in training. These findings demonstrate a near-orthogonal representation of object identity and nonident

Functional connectivity gradients of the insula to different cerebral systems.

The diverse functional roles of the insula may emerge from its heavy connectivity to an extensive network of cortical and subcortical areas. Despite several previous attempts to investigate the hierarchical organization of the insula by applying the recently developed gradient approach to insula-to-whole brain connectivity data, little is known about whether and how there is variability across connectivity gradients of the insula to different cerebral systems. Resting-state functional MRI data from 793 healthy subjects were used to discover and validate functional connectivity gradients of the

Is Mindfulness Associated With Lower Pain Reactivity and Connectivity of the Default Mode Network? A Replication and Extension Study in Healthy and Episodic Migraine Participants.

Formal training in mindfulness-based practices promotes reduced experimental and clinical pain, which may be driven by reduced emotional pain reactivity and undergirded by alterations in the default mode network, implicated in mind-wandering and self-referential processing. Recent results published in this journal suggest that mindfulness, defined here as the day-to-day tendency to maintain a non-reactive mental state in the absence of training, associates with lower pain reactivity, greater heat-pain thresholds, and resting-state default mode network functional connectivity in healthy adults

Acquired prosopagnosia with structurally intact and functional fusiform face area and with face identity-specific configuration processing deficits.

Prosopagnosia or loss of face perception and recognition is still poorly understood and rare single cases of acquired prosopagnosia can provide a unique window on the behavioural and brain basis of normal face perception. The present study of a new case of acquired prosopagnosia with bilateral occipito-temporal lesions but a structurally intact FFA and OFA investigated whether the lesion overlapped with the face network and whether the structurally intact FFA showed a face selective response. Voxel-wise Functional Connectivity of the Default Mode Network in Epilepsies: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Default Mode Network (DMN) is recognized to be involved in the generation and propagation of epileptic activities in various epilepsies. Converging evidence has suggested disturbed Functional Connectivity (FC) in epilepsies, which was inferred to be related to underlying pathological mechanisms. However, abnormal changes of FC in DMN revealed by different studies are controversial, which obscures the role of DMN in distinct epilepsies. OBJECTIVE: The present work aims to investigate the voxel-wise FC in DMN across epilepsies Methods: A systematic review was conducted on 22 publish
