We have previously shown that bilateral common carotid artery occlusion followed by reperfusion (BCCAO/R) is a model to study early hypoperfusion/reperfusion-induced changes in biomarkers of the tissue physiological response to oxidative stress and inflammation. Thus in this study, we investigate with immunochemical assays if a single dose of beta-caryophyllene (BCP), administered before the BCCAO/R, can modulate the TRPV1, BDNF, and trkB receptor in the brain cortex; the glial markers GFAP and Iba1 were also examined. Frontal and temporal-occipital cortical regions were analyzed in two groups

In the wake of the ongoing Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, a new epidemic of COVID associated mucormycosis (CAM) emerged in India. Early diagnosis and prompt treatment of this deadly disease are of paramount importance in improving patient survival. MRI is the cornerstone of diagnosis of early extrasinus disease, particularly intracranial complications which have traditionally been associated with a high mortality rate. In this review, we depict the sinonasal, perisinus, orbital and intracranial involvement in CAM. Special emphasis is laid on intracranial disease which is categor

OBJECTIVES: Vacuolar H+-ATPase is a highly conserved enzyme that plays an important role in maintaining an acidic environment for lysosomal function and accumulating neurotransmitters in synaptic vesicles. In the present study, we investigated the time-dependent changes in the expression of vacuolar H+-ATPase V1B2 (ATP6V1B2), a major neuronal subtype of vacuolar H+-ATPase located in the hippocampus, after 5 min of transient forebrain ischemia in gerbils. We also examined the pH and lactate levels in the hippocampus after ischemia to elucidate the correlation between ATP6V1B2 expression and aci

Thyroid hormones (THs) have been suggested to play an important role in both physiological and pathological events in the central nervous system. Hypothyroidism, which is characterized by low levels of serum THs, has been associated with aggravation of ischemic neuronal injuries in stroke patients. We hypothesized that administration of T3, the main active form of THs, may attenuate the ischemic neuronal injuries. In mice, global cerebral ischemia (GCI), which is induced by transient occlusion of the bilateral common carotid artery, causes neuronal injuries by inducing neuronal death and activ

BACKGROUND: Paragangliomas, also known as chemodectomas, are rare tumors arise from chemoreceptor tissue, and most commonly locate at the bifurcation of the common carotid, the jugular foramen, aortic arch, and retroperitoneum. Paragangliomas generally are considered to be benign tumors, and rarely produce local or distant metastases. Metastasis to liver is extremely rare.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 39-year-old woman, who had undergone resection of a retroperitoneal paraganglioma at her local hospital for 12 years. She was referred to our hospital for further evaluation of a h

PURPOSE: Increased robotic surgery is attended by increased reports of complications, largely due to limited operative view and lack of tactile sense. These kinds of obstacles, which seldom occur in open surgery, are challenging for beginner surgeons. To enhance robotic surgery safety, we created an augmented reality (AR) model of the organs around the thyroid glands, and tested the AR model applicability in robotic thyroidectomy.
METHODS: We created AR images of the thyroid gland, common carotid arteries, trachea, and esophagus using preoperative CT images of a thyroid carcinoma patient. For

Several studies have demonstrated that excitatory amino acid carrier-1 (EAAC1) gene deletion exacerbates hippocampal and cortical neuronal death after ischemia. However, presently there are no studies investigating the role of EAAC1 in hippocampal neurogenesis. In this study, we tested the hypothesis that reduced cysteine transport into neurons by EAAC1 knockout negatively affects adult hippocampal neurogenesis under physiological or pathological states. This study used young mice (aged 3-5 months) and aged mice (aged 11-15 months) of either the wild-type (WT) or EAAC1 -/- genotype. Ischemia w

During physiological stress (e.g., exercise, hypoxia), blood flow is shunted to specific anatomical regions to protect critical organs; yet, splenic blood flow in these circumstances remains to be investigated. Despite being classically viewed as a non-critical organ, recent experimental and epidemiological evidence suggests the spleen plays a significant role in cardiovascular pathophysiology. We hypothesized that splenic blood flow is prioritized in the development of heart failure (i.e., chronic state of reduced cardiac output). Five-week-old male Wistar rats were randomized for either myoc

BACKGROUND Vagus nerve schwannoma is a benign neoplasm that usually presents as an asymptomatic slow growing mass, and its presentation as a neck mass is rare. The diagnosis can be difficult to make and complete surgical excision is challenging due to the proximity of the vagus nerve fibers from which it originates. The most common symptom associated with vagus nerve schwannoma arising in the neck is hoarseness due to vocal cord palsy. CASE REPORT We report a case of a 55-year-old woman who presented to the clinic complaining of throat irritation and feeling of something stuck in her throat fo

Thyroid nodules constitute by far the most common disorder of the endocrine system. Epidemiological studies have indicated that approximately 5% of women and 1% of men resident in iodine-sufficient areas have palpable thyroid nodules. However, by the age of 60 years about 50% of the general population is estimated to have at least one thyroid nodule. Indeed, the reported prevalence of a "thyroid incidentaloma" is up to 70% when neck/carotid artery ultrasound, computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is performed for other indications. Of those with a nodule, 7-15% will have

Pine needle extract (PE) and fermented pine needle extract (FPE) have been reported to show various biological and pharmacological activities such as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, anti-cholesterol, gastrointestinal motility control, and fibrinolytic effect. The aims of our research were to isolate fibrinolytic compounds from PE and FPE and evaluate their antithrombotic activity in vitro and in vivo. Protocatechuic (1) and shikimic (2) acids were isolated and identified from FPE. 1 and 2 not only have fibrinolysis activity but also inhibit fibrin formation similar to aspirin.

OBJECTIVE: Ischemic stroke increases the propensity to develop depression in humans and laboratory animals, and we hypothesized that such an incidence during pregnancy may increase the risk for the development of postpartum depression (PPD).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: To test this hypothesis, we used bilateral common carotid arteries occlusion (BCCAO) to induce transient cerebral ischemia in pregnant rats, and evaluated its effects on subsequent development of PPD in dams. Additionally, we investigated whether ceftriaxone pretreatments before the induction of brain ischemia could alter the propen

INTRODUCTION: The major oxygen sensors in the human body are peripheral chemoreceptors. also known as interoreceptors- as connected with internal organs, located in the aortic arch and in the body of the common carotid artery. Chemoreceptor function under physiological conditions. Stimulation of peripheral chemoreceptors during enviromental hypoxia causes a reflex-mediated increased ventilation, followed by the increase of the muscle sympatic activity, aiming to maintain tissue oxygen homeostatis, as well as glucosae, homeostatis. Besides that, peripheral chemoreceptors interact with central c

Diabetes mellitus type 2 ranks among the strongest predictors of cardiovascular diseases (CVD) while the association of type 1 diabetes with CVD is more complex. We studied differences between type 1 and 2 diabetic women regarding association of cardiovascular risk factors with preclinical atherosclerosis expressed as intima-media thickness of common carotid (IMT CCA) and femoral arteries (IMT CFA) measured by high resolution ultrasound. Women with type 1 (n=203) and type 2 diabetes (n=123) were examined with regard to the presence of cardiovascular risk factors. In type 1 diabetic women stron

PURPOSE: To describe the effect of the C1 bursting fracture on the location of the internal carotid artery (ICA) around the atlas.
METHODS: The authors analyzed the morphology of the atlas and the ICA in 15 patients with C1 bursting fracture and compared with control group (77 patients) without any pathology. All patients were evaluated with CT angiography for the anatomical assessment. The laterality of the ICA, the distances of the ICA from the midline, anterior tubercle, and ventral surface of the C1 lateral mass were compared between two groups. The distance between the lateral margin of

Vascular dementia (VD) has been one of the most serious public health problems worldwide. It is well known that cerebral hypoperfusion is the key pathophysiological basis of VD, but it remains unclear how global genes in hippocampus respond to cerebral ischemia-reperfusion. In this study, we aimed to reveal the global gene expression profile in the hippocampus of VD using a rat model. VD was induced by repeated occlusion of common carotid arteries followed by reperfusion. The rats with VD were characterized by deficit of memory and cognitive function and by the histopathological changes in the

BACKGROUND: Takayasu arteritis (TA) is an idiopathic large-vessel vasculitis that can result in significant morbidity and mortality secondary to progressive stenosis and occlusion. Monitoring disease progression is crucial to preventing relapse, but is often complicated by the lack of clinical symptoms in the setting of active disease. Although acute phase reactants such as ESR and CRP are generally used as an indicator of inflammation and disease activity, mounting evidence suggests that these markers cannot reliably distinguish active from inactive TA.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report a 24-year

Takayasu arteritis (TA) in the child remains a therapeutic challenge because corticosteroids and conventional immunosuppressive agents are not always safe or efficacious. The complex formed by interleukin-6 (IL-6) and soluble IL-6 receptor appears to play a pivotal role in the pathogenesis of TA. We describe a favorable response to the anti-IL-6 receptor antibody tocilizumab (TCZ) in a child with aggressive and refractory TA including an assessment of the proinflammatory cytokine profile. A 3-year-old girl with TA consisting of thickening of the aortic arch wall, severe obstruction of the supr
