[A case report of urinary extravasation by renal trauma Grade III successfully managed by percutaneous drainage].

A 30-year-old man was diagnosed with renal trauma Grade a and hospitalized on February 22, 2009. There was no apparent stenosis from the renal pelvis to ureter on pyelography, but computed tomography demonstrated urinary extravasation on March 2. An indwelling drainage catheter was placed percutaneously by an ultrasound-guided approach. An incidental ureter-obstructing blood clot prolonged the indwelling period of the drainage catheter, but we succeeded in avoiding open surgery. Although ureteral stenting might be generally selected for the primary management of traumatic urinary extravasation

Management of multiple and isolated gingival recession sites with periodontal plastic surgical procedures--a case report.

Multiple recession defects in the dentition of an individual are routinely encountered in clinical practice and as such present a challenge for management. Periodontal plastic surgical procedures aim to restore both gingival esthetics as well as function in these defects. This case report highlights four periodontal plastic surgical techniques (the coronally advanced flap for single and multiple recession defects, double papillae with subepithelial connective tissue graft, and envelope technique with subepithelial connective tissue graft) that have been employed for root coverage in isolated M

Three case reports of maternal primary hyperparathyroidism in each trimester and a review of optimal management in pregnancy.

Primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) during pregnancy is associated with significant maternal and fetal risks. Prompt diagnosis and effective management during pregnancy can improve both maternal and fetal outcomes. However, there is no consensus with regard to conservative versus surgical management especially in the first and third trimester. We report three cases of PHPT associated with pregnancy that underwent parathyroidectomy each in a different trimester. Cases 1 and 2 were found to have hypercalcaemia and elevated parathyroid hormone levels in the second and first trimesters, respectivel

Splenic injury due to colonoscopy: analysis of the world literature, a new case report, and recommendations for management.

Splenic injury is a rare complication of colonoscopy. Most literature on the topic is case-report based. Our objective was to perform a comprehensive analysis of characteristics of splenic injury due to colonoscopy from available published reports in the world literature, to compare and contrast this entity with that of traumatic splenic injury, and provide recommendations for management based on the analysis. We reviewed the PubMed database without restrictions using the terms splenic trauma after colonoscopy, splenic rupture from colonoscopy, splenic injury following colonoscopy, and splenic

The role of cervical smear in the diagnosis and management of extrauterine malignancies metastatic to the cervix: three case reports.

This report analyses the clinicopathologic features of three metastatic extragenital neoplasms to the cervix. These examples of metastatic extragenital malignancies to the cervix are cutaneous malignant melanoma, colorectal carcinoma, and breast carcinoma. The diagnosis of these metastatic malignancies was suspected on a historical basis. The value of Pap smears is limited on the other hand, since for a correct diagnosis in all our cases, this examination required corroboration by histological and immunohistochemical analysis. In all these examples of extragenital metastatic neoplasms, as in o

Multispeciality approach in the management of patient with hereditary gingival fibromatosis: 1-year followup: a case report.

Background. Hereditary gingival fibromatosis is a fibrotic enlargement of the gingiva. It may exist as an isolated abnormality or as part of multisystem syndrome. This paper reports a case of 16-year-old male with generalized severe gingival overgrowth, involving the maxillary and mandibular arches and covering almost all teeth. Methods. Periodontal management of gingival enlargement included gingivectomy in both arches except in the lower right molar region where flap surgery was done under general anesthesia. After a 2-month followup period, orthodontic treatment was started with fixed appli

Childhood auditory processing disorder as a developmental disorder: the case for a multi-professional approach to diagnosis and management.

Auditory processing disorder (APD) is diagnosed when a patient presents with listening difficulties which can not be explained by a peripheral hearing impairment or higher-order cognitive or language problems. This review explores the association between auditory processing disorder (APD) and other specific developmental disorders such as dyslexia and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder. The diagnosis and aetiology of APD are similar to those of other developmental disorders and it is well established that APD often co-occurs with impairments of language, literacy, and attention. The gene

Spinal cord stimulation and the pregnant patient-specific considerations for management: A case series and review of the literature.

OBJECTIVES: The use of spinal cord stimulation (SCS) is a form of neuromodulation used to treat chronic pain in those patients who are refractory to conventional medical management. Not uncommonly, SCS can dramatically improve a patient's quality of life, and those who are in the childbearing years may go on to become pregnant. The purpose of this case series is to describe: 1) implantation considerations in women of childbearing age; 2) use of rechargeable systems; 3) the obstetric and anesthetic concerns in patients with spinal cord stimulators; 4) risks of using SCS in the peripartum period

The role of stent grafts in the management of traumatic tibial artery pseudoaneurysms: case report and review of the literature.

Tibial artery pseudoaneurysms can occur in the setting of trauma. Operative exposure and repair of these injuries can be challenging, and surgical management options include direct arterial repair, interposition grafting, or arterial ligation. Other techniques including duplex-guided compression, thrombin injection, and endovascular intervention have been described. We present the case of a 39-year-old man who sustained blunt trauma to his right lower extremity and developed a delayed symptomatic pseudoaneurysm of the posterior tibial artery. He was successfully managed with endovascular stent

Nonoperative management of a patient with a two-part minimally displaced proximal humerus fracture: A case report.

Proximal humerus fractures account for up to 10% of all fractures; however, the literature lacks any detailed nonoperative management protocols or treatment progression guidelines that are based on large randomized controlled trials. Several studies support conservative treatment of minimally displaced fractures, yet they do not document the specific interventions used nor do they provide rationale for progression. This case report describes the conservative rehabilitation of a patient following a traumatic, minimally displaced, two-part proximal humerus fracture. The patient was a 58-year-old

Differing obstetric outcomes of rosacea fulminans in pregnancy: report of three cases with review of pathogenesis and management.

Rosacea fulminans (RF) is a rare facial dermatosis characterized by the sudden onset of severe facial inflammation consisting of numerous pustules, cystic swellings and coalescing sinuses. The standard treatment is the retinoid drug isotretinoin in combination with systemic corticosteroids or with high-dose oral tetracycline antibiotics. We report three recent cases of RF in pregnancy with differing obstetric outcomes: an intrauterine death, a termination of pregnancy, and a normal vaginal delivery. The pathogenesis of RF is considered and therapeutic options in pregnancy are reviewed.

Antley-Bixler-syndrome--staged management of craniofacial malformations from birth to adolescence--a case report.

In 1975 Antley and Bixler described an unusual syndromal disorder consisting of complex craniosynostosis with midfacial hypoplasia, dysplasia of ears and nose, radiohumeral synostosis, congenital fractures of the femur and upper airway impairment in a newborn. Additional urogenital and cardiac malformations can be associated however diagnosis is based on a characteristic craniofacial deformity in association with humeroradial synostosis. Complex disturbance of craniofacial growth due to premature synostoses of the cranial base and vault results in a characteristic phenotype. Steroidogenesis du

Enterobius vermicularis infestation of the appendix and management at the time of laparoscopic appendectomy: case series and literature review.

INTRODUCTION: Enterobius vermicularis infestation of the vermiform appendix can mimic appendicitis. In these cases, laparoscopic appendicectomy runs a risk of contamination of the peritoneal cavity with worms. We reviewed our practice to suggest changes that will reduce the release of worms and propose methods to use in case contamination occurs. METHODS: 498 patients underwent appendicectomy over a sixty-three month period. 13 (2.6%) patients had confirmed E. vermicularis on histology of whom 6 (46%) were performed laparoscopically. These patients' case notes were retrospectively reviewed.

[PET-scan in orbital Malt lymphoma and its value in diagnosis and management: a series of four cases].

INTRODUCTION: The orbital location of mucosa associated lymphoid tissue (Malt) lymphoma (ML) is rare and can appear in very different forms. Biopsy is decisive for diagnosis. Although the positron emission tomography (PET) scan is rarely used in ophthalmology, it appears useful in our experience. We report four cases illustrating the diversity of the orbital localization in ML. Case 1 is a 41-year-old woman presenting unilateral corticosteroid-resistant dacryoadenitis. The PET-scan clearly fixed at the orbit. After anatomopathologic confirmation, a 36-Gy orbital radiotherapy was carried out, l

Laparoscopic management of an obstructing granulocytic sarcoma of the jejunum causing intussusception in a nonleukemic patient: report of a case.

Granulocytic sarcoma is an extramedullary tumor of immature myeloid cells which is often a forerunner to the development of acute myelogenous leukemia. Granulocytic sarcoma of the gastrointestinal tract frequently involves the small intestine and often presents with abdominal pain and obstruction. Our patient presented with a proximal jejunal mass causing intussusception and obstruction. This type of manifestation has never before been reported. A laparoscopy-assisted resection of the affected portion of jejunum was performed for him. The initial pathological findings were high-grade non-Hodgk

Management of a complex hind foot war injury with negative pressure wound therapy: a case study.

We report the use of Negative Pressure Wound Therapy (NPWT) in a 39 year old patient with a complex open hind foot injury. The patient sustained an open calcaneal fracture with extensive soft tissue damage following the detonation of an explosively formed penetrating round in a confined space. A remarkable recovery was made following surgical debridement, internal fixation of the fracture and use of NPWT over the soft tissue injury. The patient returned to his normal level of function, without complications within a few months.
