Catheter ablation of premature ventricular complexes arising from the left fascicular system.

BACKGROUND: Idiopathic premature ventricular complexes (PVCs) that originate from the left fascicular system have rarely been reported. OBJECTIVE: The present study aimed to investigate the electrophysiological characteristics and the ablation strategy for this category of PVCs. METHODS: Of 648 patients with idiopathic PVCs, 27 were enrolled in this study. All the PVCs presented with a relatively narrow QRS complex and right bundle branch block morphology. The mean QRS duration was 117.4 ± 8.6 ms. Radiofrequency catheter ablation was applied at the site recording the earliest fascicular pote

Sex differences in complications of catheter ablation for atrial fibrillation: results on 85,977 patients.

PURPOSE: Catheter ablation (CA) is an effective treatment for atrial fibrillation (AF). The differences in complication rates and outcomes between women and men remain poorly studied. We aimed to study the sex differences in morbidity and mortality associated with CA in AF. METHODS: Using weighted sampling from the National Inpatient Sample database, women and men with a primary diagnosis of AF and a primary procedure of CA (2004-2013) were identified. We compared the following outcomes based on the sex: (1) major complications [post-procedure transfusion, cardiac drain or surgery, pulmonary

Length of Catheter Use After Hysterectomy as a Risk Factor for Urinary Tract Infection.

OBJECTIVES: The aims of this study were to determine the effect of length of postoperative catheterization on risk of urinary tract infection (UTI) and to identify risk factors for postoperative UTI. METHODS: This was a retrospective case-control study. Demographic and perioperative data, including duration of indwelling catheter use and postoperative occurrence of UTI within 30 days of surgery, were analyzed for hysterectomies using the Michigan Surgical Quality Collaborative database. Catheter exposure was categorized as low-no catheter placed/catheter removed the day of surgery, intermedia

Trauma and Intensive Care Nursing Knowledge and Attitude of Foley Catheter Insertion and Maintenance.

In the acute care setting, the majority of urinary tract infections are associated with indwelling urinary catheters. Despite guidelines for proper use, catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs) continue to occur in critically ill/injured patients. There is a paucity of data on the translation between CAUTI prevention education and behavioral change. This project evaluated nurse's clinical knowledge and attitude toward Foley catheter insertion and maintenance to determine the benefits of addressing gaps in knowledge and inconsistencies in attitude through education.A prospective co

Effects of nefopam on catheter-related bladder discomfort in patients undergoing ureteroscopic litholapaxy.

BACKGROUND: Patients who undergo urinary catheterization may experience postoperative catheter-related bladder discomfort (CRBD). Previous studies have indicated that drugs with antimuscarinic effects could reduce the incidence and severity of CRBD. Accordingly, this study was carried out to investigate whether nefopam, a centrally acting analgesic with concomitant antimuscarinic effect, reduces the incidence and severity of CRBD. METHODS: Sixty patients with American Society of Anesthesiologists physical status I and II and aged 18-70 years who were scheduled to undergo elective ureteroscopi

Misplaced Foley catheter in ureter in a female with neurogenic bladder: a rare complication report.

Accidental placement of Foley catheter in ureter is a rare phenomenon. It is more common in females with neurogenic bladder who have hypocontractile bladder or there can be iatrogenic placement during surgical procedures. We describe a case of a female suffering from upper motor neuronal lesion due to trauma at T8 level (American Spinal Injury grade A) following which she developed neurogenic bladder. A Foley catheter was unintentionally placed in the ureter and subsequently removed through a novel technique of percutaneous ultrasound-guided balloon puncture. It is not only imperative to diagn

Left atrial appendage isolation in atrial fibrillation catheter ablation: A meta-analysis.

A significant proportion of patients' experience recurrence of atrial fibrillation (AF) despite pulmonary venous isolation (PVI), especially those with persistent AF. Isolation of the left atrial appendage (LAA) may reduce AF recurrence. The aim of this study was to assess the efficacy of LAA isolation in addition to PVI compared with PVI alone. We conducted a comprehensive search of electronic databases, up to April 21st, 2017, for all studies comparing the effect LAA electrical isolation or ligation in addition to PVI, as opposed to PVI alone, on the recurrence of atrial fibrillation after c

Endovascular extraction of entrapped long-term central feeding catheter: Case series.

Long-term tunneled central venous catheters are widely used in several clinical indications, that is, hemodialysis, chemotherapy, and total parenteral nutrition. However, central venous catheters are associated with a number of complications, including catheter occlusion and sepsis, which may necessitate earlier catheter removal. In most cases manual traction is sufficient to remove the catheter. Nevertheless, in some cases severe adhesions, formed between the catheter and the vessel wall, complicate simple catheter removal. We present four cases of entrapped long-term central venous catheters

Horner Syndrome After Epidural Catheter Placement in a 4-Month-Old Child.

Although there are reports of iatrogenic Horner syndrome in the adult population, pediatric cases are rare. The current report presents a case of acquired Horner syndrome that occurred after an epidural catheter was placed for pain control. Horner syndrome completely resolved after removing the catheter and no imaging or further work-up was necessary. [J Pediatr Ophthalmol Strabismus. 2018;55:e1-e3.].

Management of tunneled-cuffed catheter-related right atrial thrombosis in hemodialysis patients.

OBJECTIVES: Catheter-related right atrial thrombosis (CRAT) is an underreported but potentially life-threatening complication associated with the use of tunneled-cuffed catheters among hemodialysis (HD) patients. Because little is known about the evidence-based guidelines for the optimal management of CRAT among HD patients, this article reports findings based on 20 patients diagnosed with CRAT after catheter replacement and anticoagulation treatment. METHODS: The article retrospectively reviews the hospital records of 20 HD patients treated in the West China Hospital with diagnosis of CRAT f

Coronary artery injury related to catheter ablation of cardiac arrhythmias: A systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: Catheter ablation (CA) has emerged as the preferred modality of treatment for many cardiac arrhythmias. Anatomical sites of ablation are often located in close proximity to coronary arteries. However, the incidence of CA-related coronary injury has not been well studied. We sought to systematically evaluate all cases of CA-related coronary injuries. METHODS AND RESULTS: A PubMed search was conducted from inception until May 1, 2017 using the keywords "coronary artery" and "ablation." We identified 2817 published articles of which 43 articles met our inclusion criteria representi

[The heart catheter table is not the operating table : Intraindividual comparison of pulmonary artery pressures].

BACKGROUND: Patients undergoing cardiac surgery need extensive and invasive monitoring, which needs to be individually adapted for each patient and requires a diligent risk-benefit analysis. The use of a pulmonary artery catheter (PAC) seems to be justifiable in certain cases; therefore, the preoperative diagnosis of pulmonary hypertension represents an indication for perioperative monitoring with PAC in the S3 guidelines of the German Society for Anesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine (DGAI). In many cases, however, this preoperative diagnosis cannot be confirmed intraoperatively. OBJECT

Successful ventilation through a Rüsch intubation guide catheter in severe laryngotracheal stenosis.

BACKGROUND: Providing adequate ventilation may remain complex in patients with severe proximal laryngotracheal stenosis, especially when the airway is shared with the surgeon during tracheal resection surgery. We describe an effective alternative to standard endotracheal intubation using a Rüsch flexible intubation guide catheter. METHODS: In two patients undergoing tracheal repair surgery, we failed to insert a 5.0 inner diameter endotracheal tube (6.9 mm outer diameter) or a 6.0 mm outer diameter endoscope through the laryngotracheal stenosis. However, using indirect laryngoscopy, a 6.0 out
