Exploring synergistic interactions of ethyl acetate removal and community ecology using magnetite-entrapped biofilters.

Emissions of ethyl acetate (EA) exhaust from industrial sources can cause environmental and health risks. EA can be effectively removed by biological filtration with low operating costs and promising good benefits. This study demonstrated the synergistic effect of using magnetite and pebbles as bio-packing in promoting microbial activity and microbial abundance for EA degradation. The biofilter filled with magnetite and pebbles exhibits the most efficient removal of EA, average removal efficiency >90% (Inlet load: 120.19 ± 9.33 g/(m3·h), Empty bed residence time: 60s). Meanwhile, magnetite pro

Endemic infection with human T cell leukemia/lymphoma virus type IIB in Argentinean and Paraguayan Indians: epidemiology and molecular characterization.

Human T cell leukemia/lymphoma virus (HTLV-II) type II infection was detected by polymerase chain reaction or serologic analyses (or both) in 22% of 697 Indians of six different ethnic back-grounds inhabiting the Argentinean and Paraguayan Gran Chaco. None was infected with HTLV-I. The prevalence of HTLV-II increased with age (14% in those < 13 years and 23% in those > or = 13 years). HTLV-II infection was found in all 20 Gran Chaco communities studied, but marked differences (44%-4%) in the rate of infection were observed even in communities separated by only a few miles. These variations cor

Chemical, Biological, and Ecological Evidence for Aerobic Deoxynivalenol Detoxification in Agronomic Soil-Derived Bacterial Communities.

Deoxynivalenol (DON) is a prevalent trichothecene mycotoxin in cereals that poses food and feed safety risks while causing important economic losses. Microbial biotransformation offers a selective, mild strategy for DON detoxification. Here, we screened aerobic soil-derived bacterial communities from diverse agricultural environments, using DON as the sole carbon source for this mycotoxin depletion. More than half of the tested enrichment samples showed a reduced DON signal, as observed by HPLC-UV. To assess the biological relevance, culture extracts were tested for cytotoxicity in HepG2 cells

Phosphorus Concentration in Water Affects the Biofilm Community and the Produced Amount of Extracellular Polymeric Substances in Reverse Osmosis Membrane Systems.

Biofouling is a problem that hinders sustainable membrane-based desalination and the stratification of bacterial populations over the biofilm's height is suggested to compromise the efficiency of cleaning strategies. Some studies reported a base biofilm layer attached to the membrane that is harder to remove. Previous research suggested limiting the concentration of phosphorus in the feed water as a biofouling control strategy. However, the existence of bacterial communities growing under phosphorus-limiting conditions and communities remaining after cleaning is unknown. This study analyzes th

Tuberculous Meningitis Alters the Proteomic Landscape of Brain-Derived Extracellular Vesicles.

Tuberculous meningitis (TB meningitis), the deadliest form of Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection, causes devastating mortality and severe neurological disability despite standard therapy. Brain injury and microglial activation are major determinants of outcome, yet the molecular mechanisms linking infection, inflammation, and neuronal injury remain poorly understood. Extracellular vesicles (EVs), critical mediators of cell-to-cell communication, have been investigated in pulmonary TB, but their role in TB meningitis remains unexplored. We used a young New Zealand White rabbit model of TB men

Single-Cell RNA-Seq Reveals a Glycolysis-Biased EMT State in Keloid Keratinocytes That Amplifies the Pro-Inflammatory and Fibrotic Microenvironment.

BACKGROUND: Keloids are pathological fibroproliferative skin disorders resulting from abnormal wound healing, characterized by excessive extracellular matrix (ECM) deposition and chronic local inflammation. While dermal fibroblasts are the primary effector cells in this process, the role of keloid keratinocytes (KKs) and their metabolic alterations in sustaining the pro-inflammatory and fibrotic microenvironment remains poorly understood. METHODS: We performed single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) on 46,690 cells from keloid and normal skin tissues. Cellular metabolic activities were assesse

RUNX2 drives adenoma-to-carcinoma transition in colon cancer.

Colon adenocarcinoma (COAD), the most common subtype of colon cancer, often arises from adenomas. However, the mechanisms driving the adenoma-to-adenocarcinoma transition remain unclear, hindering early intervention and treatment. Single-cell RNA sequencing revealed that CD8+ exhausted T cells (Tex) were significantly enriched in adenoma and carcinoma tissues compared to adjacent normal tissues. Pseudotime analysis and cell-cell communication analysis together revealed a close association between CD8+ Tex cells and epithelial cells (EPCs) during the adenoma-to-adenocarcinoma transition. BPHL promotes TNBC stemness by resolving R-loops via POLR2A lactylation inhibition and BARD1-mediated ubiquitination.

Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) poses a formidable clinical challenge due to its aggressive behavior and limited therapeutic avenues. Here, we delineate a novel pathway wherein BPHL governs R-loop homeostasis to sustain cancer stem cell (CSC) stemness in TNBC. Through single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) of 26 breast cancer samples, we identified low R-loop scores as a defining feature of TNBC CSCs, marked by elevated chromosomal instability and stemness signatures. Extensive cohort analysis further confirmed that this low R-loop profile significantly correlates with poor patient progno
