OBJECTIVE: Epileptic seizures with insular genesis are often difficult to distinguish from those originating in the temporal lobe due to their complex and variable semiology. Here, we analyzed differentiating characteristics in the clinical spectrum of insulo-opercular seizures.
METHODS: Ictal semiology in patients with a diagnosis of insulo-opercular epilepsy (IOE) based on imaging of epileptogenic lesions or electrophysiological evidence of an insulo-opercular seizure origin was retrospectively analyzed and compared to age-matched controls with mesial temporal lobe epilepsy (MTE).

Centromedian thalamic nucleus is an intralaminar nucleus with vast connectivity to cerebral cortex and basal ganglia. It receives afferents from the brain stem through the central tegmental tract and is part of the diffuse thalamic projection system. Because the reticulothalamic system has been related to initiation and propagation of epileptic activity (centroencephalic theory of epilepsy), deep brain stimulation has been proposed to interfere with seizure genesis or propagation. Centromedian thalamic nucleus is a large nucleus laying nearby the anatomical references for stereotaxis and there

BACKGROUND: Firefighters inevitably encounter emotionally and physically stressful situations at work. Even firefighters without diagnosed post-traumatic stress disorder receive clinical attention because the nature of the profession exposes them to repetitive trauma and high occupational stress. This study investigated gray matter abnormalities related to high occupational stress in firefighters using voxel-based morphometry (VBM) and surface-based morphometry (SBM).
METHODS: We assessed 115 subjects (112 males and 3 females) using magnetic resonance imaging and evaluated occupational stress

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a chronic, progressive, multifactorial, and the most common neurodegenerative disease which causes dementia and mental deterioration in the elderly. The available treatments for AD are not disease-modifying drugs and only provide symptomatic relief. Astaxanthin (ATX), a second-generation antioxidant, is a dark red carotenoid and exhibits the highest antioxidant capacity, anti-inflammatory, neuroprotective, and antiapoptotic effects. In this study, we investigated the therapeutic effect of different doses of ATX on the cerebral cortex and hippocampus of AD-like rats.

Children with hemiplegic cerebral palsy (HCP) often show disturbances of somatosensation. Despite extensive evidence of somatosensory deficits, neurophysiological alterations associated with somatosensory deficits in children with HCP have not been elucidated. Here, we aim to assess phase synchrony within and between contralateral primary (S1) and secondary (S2) somatosensory areas in children with HCP. Intra-regional and inter-regional phase synchronizations within and between S1 and S2 were estimated from somatosensory evoked fields (SEFs) in response to passive pneumatic stimulation of cont

Tinnitus is hypothesised to be a predictive coding problem. Previous research indicates lower sensitivity to prediction errors (PEs) in tinnitus patients while processing auditory deviants corresponding to tinnitus-specific stimuli. However, based on research with patients with hallucinations and no psychosis we hypothesise tinnitus patients may be more sensitive to PEs produced by auditory stimuli that are not related to tinnitus characteristics. Specifically in patients with minimal to no hearing loss, we hypothesise a more top-down subtype of tinnitus that may be driven by maladaptive chang

BACKGROUND: The striatum has been reported to be implicated in various neurological diseases, including lifelong premature ejaculation (LPE). Altered striatum-related functional connectivity was investigated in LPE patients in previous studies; however, structural abnormalities in the striatum have been less studied in LPE.
PURPOSE: To identify the gray matter volume (GMV) and structural covariance patterns of the striatum between LPE patients and healthy controls (HCs).
STUDY TYPE: Prospective.
SUBJECTS: Forty-three LPE patients and 31 male HCs.

BACKGROUND: Children and adolescents with fragile X syndrome (FXS) manifest significant symptoms of anxiety, particularly in response to face-to-face social interaction. In this study, we used functional near-infrared spectroscopy to reveal a specific pattern of brain activation and habituation in response to face stimuli in young girls with FXS, an important but understudied clinical population.
METHODS: Participants were 32 girls with FXS (age: 11.8 ± 2.9 years) and a control group of 28 girls without FXS (age: 10.5 ± 2.3 years) matched for age, general cognitive function, and autism sympto

AIMS: Malformations of cortical development (MCD) include a heterogeneous spectrum of clinical, imaging, molecular and histopathological entities. While the understanding of genetic causes of MCD has improved with the availability of next-generation sequencing modalities, genotype-histopathological correlations remain limited. This is the first systematic review of molecular and neuropathological findings in patients with MCD to provide a comprehensive overview of the literature.
METHODS: A systematic review was performed between November 2019 and February 2020. A MEDLINE search was conducted

The very earliest stages of sensory processing have the potential to alter how we perceive and respond to our environment. These initial processing circuits can incorporate subcortical regions, such as the thalamus and brainstem nuclei, which mediate complex interactions with the brain's cortical processing hierarchy. These subcortical pathways, many of which we share with other animals, are not merely vestigial but appear to function as 'shortcuts' that ensure processing efficiency and preservation of vital life-preserving functions, such as harm avoidance, adaptive social interactions and ef

In the absence of input from the external world, humans are still able to generate vivid mental images. This cognitive process, known as visual mental imagery, involves a network of prefrontal, parietal, inferotemporal, and occipital regions. Using multivariate pattern analysis (MVPA), previous studies were able to distinguish between the different orientations of imagined gratings, but not between more complex imagined stimuli, such as common objects, in early visual cortex (V1). Here we asked whether letters, simple shapes, and objects can be decoded in early visual areas during visual menta

Although the link between childhood maltreatment and violence perpetration in adulthood (i.e., the "cycle of violence") is well-documented, the neural mechanisms driving these processes remain relatively unknown. The objectives of this study were to investigate whether cortical thickness in adulthood varies as a function of childhood assaultive trauma exposure and whether such neurobiological markers of early trauma relate to the perpetration of aggression across the lifespan. In a sample of 138 ethnically-diverse men and women, whole-brain analysis of the cortical mantle revealed that individ

Posterior cortical atrophy (PCA) is a rare neurodegenerative disease, which manifests with complex visual disturbances. PCA can present in isolation ('PCA-pure') or in association with other neurodegenerative disorders ('PCA-plus'). Diagnosis is nevertheless frequently delayed, as PCA is a less known disease entity and initially a primary ocular disease is taken into consideration.

Neural activity is organized at multiple scales, ranging from the cellular to the whole brain level. Connecting neural dynamics at different scales is important for understanding brain pathology. Neurological diseases and disorders arise from interactions between factors that are expressed in multiple scales. Here, we suggest a new way to link microscopic and macroscopic dynamics through combinations of computational models. This exploits results from statistical decision theory and Bayesian inference. To validate our approach, we used two independent MEG datasets. In both, we found that varia

Skilled professional artists are sometimes able to maintain their talents while other cognitive functions deteriorate due to brain diseases. The objective of this study is to asses the preserved artistry of a professional painter in spite of the presence of strokes affecting brain areas implicated in art expression. She had a neurologic evaluation and brain imaging after the stroke; painter-curators analyzed and compared the painter's pictorial artwork created before and after the stroke. In spite of cerebellar, visuospatial, motor, cognitive, and functional deficits likely related to strokes

BACKGROUND: Many studies have found that the hippocampus plays a very important role in major depressive disorder (MDD). The hippocampus can be divided into three subfields: the cornu ammonis (CA), dentate gyrus (DG) and subiculum. Each subfield of the hippocampus has a unique function and are differentially associated with the pathological mechanisms of MDD. However, no research exists to describe the resting state functional connectivity of each hippocampal subfield in MDD.
METHODS: Fifty-five patients with MDD and 25 healthy controls (HCs) matched for gender, age and years of education wer

BACKGROUND: Lifelong premature ejaculation (LPE) has been linked to altered brain function and structure. Although the middle temporal gyrus (MTG) is consistently more affected in LPE, its functional and structural changes have yet to be determined at the subregional level.
AIM: To explore the functional and structural changes of MTG in LPE at the subregional level based on a combined analysis of multimodal magnetic resonance imaging data.
METHODS: 25 patients with LPE and 21 healthy controls underwent resting-state functional and structural magnetic resonance imaging scans. The MTG was parc

Here, both neuroprotectants, i.e. cholesterol depletion of the plasma membrane of rat brain nerve terminals (synaptosomes) using methyl-β-cyclodextrin (MβCD) and deep/propound hypothermia, were analyzed during their combined administration and regarding additive neuroprotective effect. The extracellular synaptosomal level of L-[14C]glutamate significantly increased after treatment with MβCD in both deep and profound hypothermia. Cholesterol depletion gradually enhanced inhibiting effect of deep and profound hypothermia on glutamate uptake and "excitotoxic" transporter-mediated release of L-[14

The anterior insular cortex (AIC) mediates various social, emotional, and interoceptive components of addiction. We recently demonstrated a disruption of prosocial behavior following heroin self-administration in rats, as assessed by examining the animals' propensity to rescue its cagemate from a plastic restrainer while having simultaneous access to heroin. To examine the possibility that heroin-induced deficits in prosocial function are mediated by the AIC, the present study examined the effects of chemogenetic activation or inhibition of excitatory AIC pyramidal neurons on heroin-induced pr
